From the passion with which some people denounce SAO, you'd think the anime transcended its medial existence and punched people in their private places.
It's hardly deserving that. I know you can't account for taste, but people should also make the distinction between something being subjectively bad and objectively bad. SAO is hardly objectively bad. The Fairy Dance arc is its weak link, but the Gun Gale arc was a step up again and the Caliber arc is going to be stepping into the ring again though it obviously won't reach the same level as the original arc did, for obvious reasons.
I have a vendetta against it because my brother loves it, but when I showed him Madoka, he liked it.
But when I showed him Rebellion, he said he hated it and all it stood for, and refuses to watch shows like Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill.
So I don't dislike SAO on it's own merits.
Yet.
Also thread: I will kinda torture him, he's at uni right now, and I'm going to send him a dakimakura for the fun of it.

Yes, yes. And I think Clannad and JoJo's Bizarre Adventures are horrible shows. And because I think so, I recommend no one else like them either.
Oh no you didn't.
OH NO YOU DIDN'T.
YOU DO NOT CALL JOJO BAD.

The only problem with Caliber is that it's so nonsensical it hurts.
"We have to get Excalibur or else the whole map will go into Ragnorock!"
"Wait what? How?"
"Shut up and just listen to my computer daughter!"
It's stakes forced upon a situation when we could've had a more laid back arc about playing the damn game and relaxing, considering the last arc was about a serial killer, and the next arc is about a little girl dying of aids.
Yeeees! One of the reasons why it's almost painful to watch. The urgency feels so insanely fabricated and plastic that it's really more annoying than anything else. Could've had an episode or two with some jokes and character interactions but so far we've got yelling and nonsensical reasoning

Sure enough Caliber doesn't have much of a plot ... but it's getting the characters and the action right.
Though really the only arc that I am really looking forward now in SAO is Underworld. That one has potential, the rest is just fillers as far as I'm concerned. Though I hope the upcoming arc with Yuki and Asuna does the latter some more justice, plus it's set in Aincrad again, that's bonus points.

Can't expect everyone to get out of their comfort zone. Most people simply watch the mainstream shows and stick to them until the next big hit comes along and miss the little pearls going on at the sidelines.
I wouldn't hold a complacent audience against the anime though.
True it's better to judge shows on their own merits and own personal enjoyment. It is hard not to get mad though when the audience is praising something as gods gift to anime when there are tons of much much better shows out there.

I've never watched SAO.
But from the impression I get it's more of a huge f*cking let down more than anything else.
I hear the second season is basically the opposite. Starts our being crap and then starts picking up. So the series might go full circle but I've been unwilling to find out for sure after putting up with season one.
Once you experiance Oberon you really just don't want to go back. He's like a sad pathetic version of Dio that's nowhere close to entertaining and can just f*ck right off.

You know how it is, people as a collective are stupid. If there's anything that democrazy has proven beyond a doubt, it's that.

SAO? Horrible plot + Bad characters + Good action + An excessive amount of ass shots = A barely mediocre show.

Can we at least agree that the very first SAO season, the Aincrad arc (episodes 1-14) is worthy giving it a try, or are people seriously judging the entirety of the series on the Fairy Dance arc?

I can agree to that.
Atleast it had a decent ending...until they / the Author decided to continue it.
O'well.
Psycho pass to cheer myself up.
