I've just started a Dalish rogue archer. So far i've noticed that archery seems pretty lame, am I missing something. Also is it possible to enchant bows like melee weapons? I can't remember seeing any when I went through the game as a Rogue DW.

Actually I think archery is underrated...my main is an archer rogue and he does pretty well. The ability to deal damage at a distance is a large one...and the crit abilities work well with mage spells that freeze!

Well thanks for clearing that up for me. I guess I'll go for the 2h warrior instead then.

I guess it depends what you like. Archery certainly isn't a power build that let's you blast through the game. But I'm personally having a blast with my archer. He's lvl 12, has the ranger spec, goes on every quest he can with Dog as one of the party, does a great job with stuns, lockdown, and the occasional insta-boss-kill with arrow of slaying, and is all around just alot of fun for me. With some rogue skills he can defend himself in melee and put some distance between him and his target and make himself extra useful opening locks and using survival to spot ambushes ahead.

Given, it is more of a challenge. But that's what makes it even more enjoyable. Battles take more pausing and planning, but when everything comes together, and it's your arrow of slaying that you've been horsing stamina through out the fight just so you can get that final shot that takes down the dragon or demon or whatever, it's pretty darn satisfying.

Yes, you're most likely missing the dex/archery hotfix. I am surprised nobody mentioned this yet.

Was going to ask about that. I got a glimpse of someone mentioning it before and I forgot about it afterwards.
But doesn't it make the game harder?

In any case, the topic can now be about how marvellous my character looks. Isn't she pretty? Image IPB

Dex is bugged overall on daggers and bows, so get the Hotfix, and by level 20 you will be seeing stuff like 800 damage crits with Arrow of Slaying...

archery worth it? HELL YEAH!

with the hotfix u can do 2 things IMO:

full dex, and go with shortbows.

dex+str and go for crossbows.

thats just my opinion...

the biggest HIT I had on Nightmare difficulty was Leliana 921 damage on some darkspwan mage type mob...

You can make a great support archer ranger/bard that breaks up big groups of mobs, one shots enemy mages, offtanks with pets, buffs and crowd controls with songs. In retrospect i wish i had gone this route on my first play through since ive always enjoyed being the kingmaker not the king.

Didn't know there was a hot fix for dex, I'll give that a go.

Wait till they do the dex fix and also wait till they fix the archery abilities. most of the abilities dont work with a bow correctly which is a pain in the ass.

its not perfect, but it certainly fixes the dex issues and makes bows much better.

someone mentioned it above, but you know.

Not really, only slightly so, I've found archers now actually deal damage like they should have originally but they are rarely if ever overpowering (mind you I'm playing on normal) And I have yet to find a situation that's been made impossibly hard by the hotfix. It also makes it so your party archers can actually take down targets with relative ease.

Have you gone to that one part in the one place where there are all of them archers? I figured that would be a sominabish. And the Dex Hotfix doesnt fix the archery talents not giving crit for bows like they should.

My Leliana with Archery Mastery, Rapid Shot, Lethality, and all Dexterity and Cunning would destroy things that Morrigan puts Death Hex on. I used the dex hotfix. It gave Leliana a 20-25% boost in damage.

Death Hex almost always lands on monsters, regardless of rank, and makes all of Leliana's hits crit. As soon as I clear a boss of its adds and put on Death Hex, its health drops instantly.

My Leliana had 20 STR, 45 DEX, and the rest into 40-42 in CUN. The 20 STR was there to equip decent leather armor.

Scatter Shot is great against crowds. It always lands and stuns everything within a medium range. Arrow of Slaying destroys casters. At the end, I opted to turn Rapid Shot off, because she had 24% ranged crit. I don't know if she would have done more damage over time with Rapid Shot on, but I like those stickied numbers!

Morrigan (Spirit/Blood), Main Character (Spirit/Blood), Alistair (Templar/Champion), Leliana (Bard/Duelist).

I'm doing my 4th play-through, female Dalish Rogue Archer.  Longbow.  NO HOTFIX!
Super-high Dex, fairly high Cunning (Lethality talent), Strength to allow for Wade's Drakeskin.  (also just got Stomper (?) boots from DLC lvls)

Right now I'm level 21, plan on breaking 23 again.

Can't quite remember, but my
Armor is around 14
Defense is around 120,
Attack Rating about 110,
Damage around 48

No normal unit can reach me before they're dead.  No normal unit can actually hit me if they somehow get close (mob).  Arrow of Slaying takes down most non-boss units in one shot.  Shattering Arrow is good mob stunner.

Traps and stealth for fun, but not even needed.

Can I lay out enemies in 1 hit like the 3 previous play-through characters?  No. (except for Arrow of Slaying, or Critical Shot if they're frozen)  HOWEVER, there are many places where I've been able to do stuff that no other class could either!  (in part due to the crappy AI; you can shoot a unit, and ONLY that unit will pursue you, as his allies keep ignoring you LOL!)

But,  there things that still NEED FIXED:
1.  archers don't receive elemental weapon charges from Mages (hell, even the dog gets that!!!)
2.  archer can't coat arrows -- this is absurd -- historically, it WAS the darts/arrows that got coated with poisions!
3.  should be able to craft elemental arrows.  For Maker's sakes, if you can make complex traps, you can make an arrow head w/ elemental damage!  Elemental arrows can't even be bought in most places, so all you get is what you find!
4.  criticals are absurdly low -- I don't even bother with them; leave Rapid Fire on

A stealthed archer can make this game easier than any mage could ... my archer has 40% party dmg and is one very very scary dude to come across. You just need to play him right.
