I understand that it is important to be able
to spell. Also perfect grammar on the threads would not go amiss.

However, I have noticed that there is a lot of anger at people who make any
kind of mistakes.

Some people will simply refuse to read a post as a matter of principle
regarding any kind of linguistic error.

The question is, why should I care if the web is plagued with poor spelling and grammar? I don't really pick up on this since I'm too busy looking at the content. As long as I can understand the post without looking at it a second time, I'm generally happy.

I want to hear your point of view. I am particularly
interested in the point of view of those who make a great deal out of pointing
out such mistakes. (Advance apologies for any errors in opening post).

I suppose some people believe that grammar and spelling are vital to any discussion or argument being made - that if those details are overlooked, it might speak for how much a person truly cares (or doesn't) about what he/she is attempting to convey. Having worked on a few editing tasks and QA, I see the value and importance of grammar & spelling. But...I also care about the core idea/concept of the post and discussion point. So too, what may be viewed as bad grammar could be explained by English not being the native language of the poster - there are numerous variables to consider.

Personally, typos and the like don't bother me so much in posts enough to comment on them. It's not like I can say that I am flawless in my posting.

I think grammar, spelling, and syntax are important. You aren't going to take someone very seriously if they don't know the difference between their, there, and they're, or your, and you're. I can forgive the occasional screw up, but when it's constant, I'll point it out. Of course, if it's obvious English isn't their first language, it doesn't matter. Typos don't bother me though, well they do, but that's my OCD, it doesn't bother if someone else makes one though.

Also ur, and yer send me into an anger cul de sac.

You shouldn't. Both content and presentation go hand-in-hand to make "the highest quality" post; Meaning it should seem well-informed, and thought out. On the other hand, I'm personally not that picky on spelling and grammar. dat Gmag's a gud frend tbh hee hee ps mirandas buttcheek.

Ultimately, what bothers me in posts is less about grammatical flaws, and more about biased comments and otherwise poorly thought-out messages. Quality Over Quantity.

I don't think it's a big deal. While I appreciate the care put into a well written post, I'm with whykikyouwhy in considering the ideas behind a body of text paramount.

Wagging my finger at someone and demanding their writing improve will not make it a reality. They will simply dismiss me and continue their habits. Additionally, it's very hard to look like an anything short of an ass when you go around correcting others for grammatical errors or poor spelling.

If I can understand someone's post--great. If I can't, then I won't have any idea what they're trying to say. Since the reason most forumites write a post is to voice their opinion, not understanding and subsequently overlooking their words as a result is criticism enough.

Small mistakes are fine because nobody is perfect. After all, if you can still understand what it is you're reading then there shouldn't be a problem. Not to mention when it comes to the internet you may also be dealing with those who don't speak English as a first language and they may not be good at it.

However, I can understand the frustration and lack of interest in trying to comprehend certain texts that have poor spelling or grammar; especially if it's so bad the meaning becomes lost. There are even times where even if the spelling and grammar are correct, the entire text is still garbage because it lacks meaning. You can still have something that is completely correct in terms of spelling and grammar rules, but it lacks any sort of point or meaning.

So yes, quality over quantity. If there's no meaning behind the text then in the end it doesn't matter.

I really don't mind about spelling and grammar, especially because I can start mispelling a lot when I'm posting some thoughtful, wall-of-text reply. It's the content of the post that matters most to me.

Besides, that GMagnum makes spelling errors look hella gud tbh.

Hm...sometimes it bothers me if something is meant to be 'highbrow'. Typos and grammatical errors in those are bad as far as I'm concerned.

If engaged in a debate I am of the opinion that grammar and spelling is more important because you know that opponents will pick on those things and interpret your words differently on purpose. There's also the case where some will just not quite understand what has been written.

If it's just casual conversation then as long as I get the meaning I wouldn't give a flying monkey's whether there are typos or grammatical errors.

As for why should you care? Depends upon the purpose for which you are reading. Certainly wouldn't recommend copy and pasting a very poorly written piece of text for a piece of homework...not that you should ever do so. *Cough*

I don't really mind as long as it's comprehensible and you're not calling someone out for poor grammar, punctuation and spelling.

I don't mind minor mistakes, but people should attempt to write correctly. I hate seeing a wall of text with no punctuation or paragraphs.

I can't spell well so not normally bothered by bad spelling (unless it's of short/simple words...especially common errors like spelling "rogue" as "rouge"....)
[I occasionally joke about Americans and their tendencies to copy Webster's misspellings (which I understand were deliberate because he had no confidence in the spelling ability of Americans)
On grammar can be more irritable (if the "h" is not silent it is preceded by "a" not "an" though "an" is correct for a silent "h").
Though, you shouldn't be picky because:-
1) language is constantly changing/evolving and varies internationally
2) there are a lot of other people happy to do it for you (and you would be depriving them of their fun if you got in first)

Of course you should care. Don't you want the message you're sending or receiving to be as clear and understandable as possible? Not that you need to be a jerk about it, of course.

You should always try to write to the best of your ability. Otherwise, you risk becoming an prolly-using, could-care-less spouting abomination whose only recompense is death by fire.

Making mistakes is acceptable, not caring isn't!

Well, I admit that I won't patronize a business that has grammar or spelling errors in its advertising. It's a little petty, but you gotta take a stand.

So long as the intent of the post is clear I won't criticise people's spelling or grammar, it would be hypocritical of me. As I don't always double check my own posts for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.

If I'm drafting a piece of work, a professional email or presenting work then it's another matter entirely, it's discurtious to present work unchecked. It was impressed upon me that it reflects a lack of care or lack of respect for the reader, maybe a slightly odd view on my part.

This. If I can understand what you're saying clearly, and there's thought put into the argument, that matters more to me than punctuation and spelling.

Interesting, because sometimes I think dismissing corrections as "cheap shots by idiots" comes across as "I did this wrong but I'm sure as hell going to find an excuse for it rather than correct it".

I mean I don't personally do pedantic correction, 'cause you just can't expect people to be 100% correct in casual conversation, but... hrm.

It depends.  If the person is trolling or being a snot to others, it's just karma.
