English is not my native language. I am getting better at it, but it is far from perfect. I have sites like dictionary.com and Wikipedia open on my second monitor and I use a spelling checker to help me write a post. I edit most of my posts to correct errors. I feel I should do that because I want to be better in the language and I think it helps me to get my point across.

If someone comments on grammar or spelling then most (if not all) of the time it is not because someone is annoyed by it, but it is an attempt to invalidate the post. It's much like trying to dismiss its contents because it's "an opinion" or attach emotion to it. Or even worse: Comment by posting a demotivational. Those are tricks used by people whenever they have no arguments left and are intended to derail the thread.

It doesn't really bother me when I observe poor spelling or grammar on an internet forum. One would expect a reasonable chunk of the responses to come from either children or teenagers, raised in an age where spelling in school doesn't matter due to AutoCorrect and everything being typed up in Word.

In the real world however, especially in the corporate world (in which I work) - it is much less forgivable. I've seen plenty of CVs thrown into the bin straight away for spelling or grammar errors, without any consideration given to academic grades or other achievements. Some of them were quite amusing (extreme examples below):

"I has good logics"
"Work Goals: To grow myself. To shine myself."

Would I hire somebody who writes like that - knowing that they would be interacting with clients (or potential clients)? Not a chance.

It depends on the situation.

It bothers me if it's obvious the person made no attempt to write something decent.

A few mistakes aren't a big deal.

I really hate ghetto talk though. Especially in a professional setting. Like bunny said:

"I has good logics" = no you don't

"To grow myself or to shine myself" = shine floors

I work in a control room. We have a security guard. The guard has such terrible english I sometimes wish she would get fired. It bothers me because she forces the ghetto talk for the sake of what she thinks is cool. Instead she just looks like a moron. She even types official company documents this way. I've tried to politely correct but it does no good. She actually takes pride in her butchered English. Sometimes I wonder how she even graduated High school. Honestly.

It's funny because she doesn't have a college degree but she tells everyone she is working for a Master's degree. LOL

While I may agree that correct spelling and proper grammar are important, it is not appropriate to correct others about their spelling and grammar in the forums.

The main reasons are:

1. English is not the primary language on many Community members. When translated using things like babble-fish or other translator, things can get muddied a bit.

2. Colloqueal english is very common most places in the english-speaking speaking world,  and is not uncommon in other languages as well.

3. Correcting others on spelling and grammar can derail topics just as any other un-related post to a topic and is an unacceptable practice in the forums.

If you wish to be helpful to someone, send them a polite private message (PM) with suggestions, but don't do so in the forums.

Typically, if someone has a gross amount of spelling and grammar errors, refuses to use periods at the end of sentences, or has a wall of text (without capitalization or punctuation of any kind), I assume the person has nothing worth reading and will simply "back" out of the thread or skip the post altogether.

Why should I expend extra effort to read someone else's poorly written post when they didn't expend a little extra effort to write in a legible, easy to read manner?

I found that people who dismiss an argument based on grammar are doing so because they can't figure out a way to do so any other way. Spelling and Grammar does not represent intelligence in fact there is a correlation that state the opposite.

I'm much more willing to believe that someone who formulates complete and clear sentences is intelligent.

I don't know, but "Yo dawg we gon tu da store waz gud" doesn't exactly give off the impression of having a good education.

Not saying that people are automatically less intelligent if they make grammatical errors, just that its more likely.

I have NO IDEA where on Earth you heard of a correlation that states the opposite, but now my curiosity is piqued.

What the hell have you done? How on Earth did you do that?
"I understand why some people might be annoyed by spelling and my grammar errors on the internet but frankly I think there maybe more important things to worry about." Is that what you said?

I made so many spelling and grammar errors that my computer just gave up.

That's an interesting post - I'd love to see the statistical study (or studies?) which formally established that correlation - or a study which correlates poor spelling and grammer (generally speaking) with a lack of education. :)

"I understand why some people might be annoyed by spelling and my grammar errors on the internet but frankly I think there maybe more important things to worry about." Is that what you said?

I made so many spelling and grammar errors that my computer just gave up.

Or used a Zalgo Text Editor. /wee

Holy cow!  Really?  That is like a special ability.  No seriously what are you talking about?  The brain is a computer if you haven't heard.

Constantly?  All your life?  How old are you?

class average on what?  The GED?  Correct me if I'm wrong...the graduating class didn't take the GED because they passed high school.  What/how did you out score on?

I don't really understand your post.

Anyway, I've never felt like dyslexia makes someone less intelligent.  I've met too many dyslexic smarties to convince me otherwise

You sir are an ass, but you do have a  vaild quetions that I will answer.

The GED test has a comparable assessment test from the state that all students must take to graduate. These results are listed on a graph with with paper work I got back with my GED.

Also whats to point of berating me only yo agree with me in your last response?

I'm not talking about the people who talk like what you described. I'm more referring to people with Dyslexia who can't spell. Like myself, who's brains are wired differently for lack of a better term. If I didn't have spell check here I would seem like a complete idiot. I don't read like people with out Dyslexia either. I read words by there shape not there spelling. I can also use my head like a computer of sorts and design things in my head and know how they will function basically running simple simulations in my head. Not that IQ means much but I've constantly been in the ninety fifth percentile all my life. I'm using myself as an example here but there are many people who are wired like this
http://www.dyslexia....gift.htm#981207

I always struggle in school, with the writing assignment and such always barely passing the classes you being in the top of the standardized testing. I had to tech myself the right way to read for the way my brain works. The schooling system failed and they put me in drop out prevention classes all through middle and high school and you know what ended up happening? I dropped out because I was failing. Then I took my test for my the GED, Again out scored the graduating class average by at least 15% in everything but the writing portion. The School system in place was not made for people like me.

Anyway I went a little off here. My original point was the there is more of a correlation with High intelligence and dyslexia then there is with Spelling errors and stupidity.

For what it's worth, which is to say nothing, I have to say that my experience tends to favour this. Meaningless and anecdotal though it might be, I know two people personally who are genuinely* dyslexic and quite gifted in their chosen fields, and have worked with more in the past. I have never met a stupid person who is dyslexic, although I have met people who have almost no education because they're dyslexic which is 1) not the same thing and 2) a result of them being considered morons at school because of dyslexia.

*I also know a woman who is pretty close to being a literal idiot who pretends to be dyslexic as she considers it a fine excuse for her slapdash proof-reading, and has admitted this to me. Sadly, I think her story is not unique.

I wouldn't agree that people with dyslexia are on average, more intelligent than an average person. I believe that there has been at least 1 formal study which establishes independence between IQ and reading/writing capabilities.

The implication of said study of course, is that on average, there is absolutely no difference between a dyslexic person and a normal person with respect to IQ. There will be some highly intelligent dyslexic people, some not, and many average.

What might change however, as a result of a person having dyslexia, is the motivation to pursue certain fields of study or work in life, and the overall work ethic.

On a somewhat related note, it has been a recent trend in Western countries, that females are obtaining higher grades than their male counterparts at school, and obtaining a higher share of university/college placements. This phenomenon is unrelated to intelligence, and is instead linked to motivation and work ethic.

Spelling errors and inproper language doesn't bother me as long as I can read and understand the post. Not all of us have English as our mother language. I sure don't and even if I read/write/hear English all day long when gaming, I still make mistakes. I don't know all the words. I misspell words. I make grammar mistakes. Sometimes I end up leaving out whole words because I am not capable of thinking for a few minutes before actually writing my posts. I'm not that type of person.

What pisses me off is seeing posts that look like puke on a paper. This is especially furiating when the person is writing the way he/she is due to sheer laziness.

Ima americano s i can writz lik ths k? KK, LOL, lmao, peeb, qq, cba cya tty laterz. Ima pwn u nob.

Then again, people writing overly fancy posts with mind boggling words is just as annoying. Reading the dictionary while spending hours to construct a well formed argumental post to ****** someone off is just lame.
