Sorry if this has been answered before but I just got this game and I'm wondering if I can play it with my nvidia card as default.  The config tool only detects the intel HD gpu.  My laptop has optimus and I'm trying to play it with a nvidia gt540m.

Any help would be appreciated.

Intel hasn't made anything more substantial than a video chip in about 14 years now, and that one attempt at a proper card was a dismal failure. Your problem doesn't involve the game, it's the bad drivers from nVIDIA again. without more general  information, going any further than that would be a waste of time, I think. besides, we ALREADY HAVE a message thread about whether or not you can run the game, or DA-2, right here:

And the site's archives have a relatively sizable number of your question already.  It's been happening for close to a year and generating reports in the ME-2 Tech forum, and I'm sure I've seen even more coming through when visiting Bethesda's Hardware forums also.  The best idea if you play a lot of games is to very strictly AVOID any of nVIDIA's really awful "Optimus" hardware.  You will never be happy with it.  It's been purposely crippled for power saving reasons and uses Intel's chip as a front end in some manner ~ ~ it's no longer a complete, stand-alone Graphics Processing Unit now.

But I know for a fact that I can run the game with the Nvidia card, that is not even the issue. Issue is to get the config utility to default to my discrete card over the intel one.

I think it has to do with the optimus (switchable gfx) feature.  Kinda confusing to the user.

Personally, I think you should have stayed away from "Optimus" because it's just too compromised by the way it integrates with the Intel graphics. There are better nVIDIA mobile options to have chosen, and I'm sure it will constantly create problems for you with many games.

Perhaps so. I've actually found a solution and I am finally able to run the game on the nvidia card. Nvidia is partially to be blamed as they don't bother with drivers catering to individual manufacturers (i.e. asus, dell, etc). They just attempt a blanket fix and be done with it.
