I don't think I said everyone was out gor themselves but I think I got him to look for his own interests more and get taken advantage of less-which I think was enough to harden him.
Aoife is right that Alistair is not gay and only will marry a noble but a non-noble female can still romance him and become his mistress.

The second conversation will only trigger when Alistair is Friendly/Adore or better. (Around +70 or +75, the threshold may be slightly lower if the romance is active. Don't quote me on that, though.)
