I know what you're actually referring to. But. I can't make jokes about that here. I'll explain it. :)

Sooo, what kind of Orlesians do you want to see in DA3?

I propose Pepe le Pew. The quintessential charming French character. He's smooth, suave, sophisticated and 100% awesome. He'll make a great Orlesian Companion character.
And his cartooniness fits the new art style.

Image IPB

Image IPB

Seriously though, French cinema is full of great characters. Let the writers watch some French movies (if need be with subtitles - not dubbed) and let their imagination go with it. Same goes for French (and Belgian) graphic novels.

Image IPB

(Chevalier de Fronsac, Pacte des Loups)

Image IPB

Sylvia, Papal agent. Now, she's a 'bard' as an Orlesian bard should be :).

Image IPB

Comte Geoffroy de Peyrac (Angelique movies). Now that's how you do smouldering and brooding.
The kind of dude who leaves his enemy bound to the mast of a burning, sinking ship, because nobody touches his wife and lives^_^.
That's probably also what he would do to Fenris, but that would probably not require any compelling reason.

Image IPB

Comte Godefroy de Montmirail (Les Visiteurs). The Prince of Tactful diplomacy:P

Image IPB

Comte Savinien de Kerfadec (Chouans!; the ever-great Philippe Noiret)
World-weary, wise, witty and kind. Also, very intellectual (same with de Fronsac and de Peyrac, ironically. French seem to envisage their aristocrats as well-educated and intelligent men of action, rather than foppish and stupid).

Image IPB

Francois Vatel (Gerard Depardieu, 'Vatel'), the incredibly energetic and intelligent super-chef and entertainment organiser in chief.
Slightly emo, because he reputedly killed himself because the fish was too late for the visiting Louis XIV's dinner.
Funny detail: He was actually Swiss-German by descent (area of Zurich).

Image IPB

Moliere, as played by Romain Duris in the movie of the same name. Charming and very funny, but also serious.

Image IPB

Benoit Poelvoorde as 'Ben' in C'est arrivé pres de chez vous, the nicest French-speaking (Belgian, in this case) assassin you could meet.^_^.  He can be extremely vile and violent, but oh, the wit:lol:

Image IPB

Eloïse d'Artagnan (La fille d'Artagnan), daughter of you-know-who.
Daddy dearest was killed in the Netherlands by the way, in the siege of Maastricht.
Either that or Dutch cheese did not agree with him :(

Adele Blanc-sec ('Isabella Avondrood' for the Dutchies among us) from the comics by Jacques Tardi.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but this picture says it all I think:

Image IPB
And of course any character played by Audrey Tautou.

Naturellement also the eponymous characters as portrayed in The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers directed by Richard Lester. Forget about crappy cheap American remakes.

And could we have a Rochefort-esque villain / evil companion a la Christoper Lee?

Image IPB

Oh, and while not suitable as a playable Companion character, I would really love the Divine to turn out to be sort of a female Richelieu. I've had it with wise kindly elderly grandmotherly figures and crazed fanatic crackpots.
It's time for amoral sophisticated pragmatism!:innocent:

Oh, comte Geoffroy de PeyracImage IPB.
That could be a perfect model for an Orlesien PC. He has it all; sophisticated, the torn look, sexy, broody and determination.

Give him a dark voice with a little timbre and he would be an LI send from heaven.Image IPB

Been thinking about the voice he needs to have. Morgan Freeman kinda voice with an accent would do nicely I think. Allthough Fenris's voice could match pretty well tooImage IPB. Shame it's allready been used.

I... don't have strong feelings about this. So I'll just say, the Orleasians game developers have had in their minds all along.

I wouldn't mind playing as an Orlesian mage, or having such a Companion, in order to get a taste of what it's like to be a mage in the Vatican er, the seat of Chantry power.

Thus far the picture we've been given of Orlesian nobility is not very attractive.  I'd sooner play a commoner, if only to get a perspective of the lives of Orlesian peasantry, something we have yet to really hear much about.

Given that there are six Circles of Magi in Orlais, it would be interesting to see how the Orlesian Empire is doing in the midst of the schism between the templars and the mages. I'd like to see through the POV of an elven mage from Orlais, to see how the local elves in the Alienage and how the nation's mages are treated.

I actually would like to see an Orlesian who isn't a pompous ass. That stereotype is getting old fast.

Well there's not a single personality that I can think of that's really going to fit the orlesian theme but if I had to make a pick it would be "The duelists" Keith Carradine's D'hubert character.

Not just the Mage-Templar War. Orlais is facing a civil war as well, with rumors flying about stating that Empress Celene I is either dead, incarcerated by Grand Duke Gaspard, or holed up in Jader with her army.

I imagine Mages in Orlais will have a tough time moving through the countryside, given Gaspard has closed off some of the roads.

Additionally, we may see mages assisting either side.

What’s up with Orlesian titles anyway? I remember from the Codex that Kordilius what’s-his-name abolished them?
And yes, I know they sort of re-introduced titles through the back door – but those were titles along the line of ‘Favourite Stepcousin Thrice Removed of the Catamite-in-Chief of the Polyamorous Dude Who Almost Defeated the Semi-fearsome Chicken of Bristol’. But now I read and hear about Comte this and Duc that.

Not that I mind, it was pretty silly and convoluted anyway; but am I looking at a (deliberate or accidental) retcon?

Some additions:

Image IPB

Jean Marais as the Vidame de Chartres (Vidame is a title equivalent to Viscount).
Mostly because of how he looks though (it's from a movie based on an old French literary classic, La Princesse de Cleves).
I mean, this is one mean-looking mofo, pardon my French;)

Image IPB

Captain Thomas Cortemain (from the tv series La Commanderie), disillusioned and opportunistic former mercenary who gradually recovers his conscience.

Image IPB

Tristan Quimperlé (also from La Commanderie), defrocked monk, unemployed mercenary, brigand chief. Funny, vile and deeply pious at the same time. Would give Oghren a run for his money.
Probably they would become best drinking buddies^_^

Image IPB

Brune Azéma, female healer. Slightly Wynne-ish, but fiercer. All that and brains too <3

Before I dive into speaking about models for Orlesians, I think I should state a contraversial opinion that no one will read anyway.  Leliana should only be mentioned in DA3 and perhaps shown in a very few cut-scene vignettes that hint at activity in portions of Thedas that are not approached in DA3.

In any case, that's just my opinion and not what I think would work to make people happy with DA3.  Unless it shows Leliana as surprisingly capable, cunning, and dangerous -- and hints at a larger world outside Thedas (which is only a continent).

Now, I am thinking of Antonin Artaud.
 Image IPB

Antonin Artaud is an interesting person to pay respects to, especially in a game like Dragon Age.  Artaud pioneered many concepts that are today used in "nightmarish sequences" in film and theater.  Dragon Age could do worse than giving a small nod to this strange idealist.  Of course, Strindberg could also be of interest but not very Orlesian.

George Sand is a fascinating author.  Some view her early work as tawdry and flawed due to extensive personal sympathies, but she is truly a lion of words as she grew in maturation.  From this picture it is easy to imagine her in armor with a sword but perhaps only if you imagine her singing, "L'homme, l'homme, l'homme armé, l'homme armé. L'homme armé doibt on doubter, doibt on doubter. On a fait partout crier, que chascun se viengne armer d'un haubregon de fer."  This I cannot understand because I haven't the slightest notion how to read any Gallic phrase.
 Image IPB

And also there is Jean Genet, dangerous man and great playwright and poet.  The book Saint Genet is a biography by philosopher Jean Paul Sartre, about this very transvestite thief.  Doesn't he resemble a tough guy from a movie?  Heart o' gold, I tell ya.  And strong writing skills.

Of course, I am tempted to put photos of Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Foucault, Mylene Farmer, Alizee Jacotey, Tay Arrow Sherman, Cleo de Merode, Verlaine (apologies to Rimbaud), Alphonse Louis Constant, and Rachilde. I should not forget to mention Renee Bordereau, Marie-Therese Figueur, and Claude des Armoises.

I would mention the author of The Little Prince but it goes without saying that a man might ride a dragon to his death, but only for a lonely rose on a little planet.Image IPBImage IPB

It can be totally plausible that the civil war will be put on hold so to speak so that the templar/mage conflict that according to the epilogue in DA2 runs over Thedas like an oil stain will be resolved first.
