I am curious what everyone thinks the best background pairing are?
I've just restarted playing Mass Effect to prepare myself for the third game. I intend to play as the following characters.
Matthew Shepard [Spacer + Sole Survivor]
He is a Paragade, had a good start to life following in his parents footsteps, but it was Akuze that showed him the true value of life.
Anthony Shepard [Earthborn + War Hero]
He is a paragon, he may have started off with a gang but he believes that he is capable of more. He joined the Alliance to prove himself and Elyssium gave him a chance to do that.
Holly Shepard [Colonist + Ruthless]
She is a renegade, she grew up like any other colony kid until Mindoir was raided. Losing her family and friends instilled in her a belief she cannot rely on anyone but herself. When she hears about Torfan she thinks of what slavers did to her and showed no mercy...
So thats the pairings I believe work best. What are yours?
Best Background pairing?

Spacer/War Hero. Ultimate good-guy, comes from a military line, heroic etc. Paragon.
Colonist/Ruthless. Does whatever is needed to make sure the bad guys pays. Especially slavers. Renegade.
Earthborn/SS. Surviving on their own wits and skills has been a part of life since the early years. Doesn't trust other easily. Paragade.
I've played others that also make for interesting RP'ing. Spacer/SS. Earthborn/War Hero. Earthborn/Ruthless. Colonist/War Hero.

Earthborn and Sole Survivor for me, shows that Shepard is a real survivor and can overcome adversity.

^^ That was my "canon" Shepard's background, and I never regretted it. The two just seemed to fit well together. It gives the impression that Shepard is the ultimate survivor, not relying on anybody but his or her own strength of mind.
I also like the Spacer/War Hero combination, for the same reason as HolyAvenger. This Shepard would be the ultimate military paragon type. But you could also play with it a bit, make them be kind of speciesist because all their beliefs have been shaped by the Alliance.
Just in general, though, I think all combinations are interesting, and I kind of like to play around with combinations of backgrounds and class to come up with a story about how Shepard got the way s/he is.

Spacer and Ruthless for me. My Shep seemed like a typical heroine-to-be at the start, but turned out to be one militaristic lady capable of doing anything at any cost. Makes sense, though, seeing how the loner never had true friends - she always had to leave them when moving from planet to planet with her parents.

Spacer/War Hero for me. I like to solve every crew issue peacefully, and every time I put a bullet through the skull of any Batarian I think, "Yeah, remember the Skyllian Blitz? So do I!"

When I first played ME it was Spacer/War Hero, now I feel since Earth is a huge part of ME3 that Earthborn/War Hero is the best for me.
