With almost finishing my latest runthrough (a dwarven berserker) I want to try a Blade through the Saga. Never run with a bard at all, so its something new. In straight BG I he will be a plain bard.
However I intend to CHEAT! I want my bard to be an elf, they are not allowed to be bards for some reason. I dont know why really, since the forgotten realms wiki says: "Most elves love simple joys such as dancing, singing, footraces, or
contests of skill. Elves find a natural aversion to that which they see
as uninteresting tasks and are fun-loving by nature." This sounds like a bard to me!
Now to my question: If I roll a half elven bard and convert him to elf with GateKeeper, will the elven bonuses apply or will I have to do something more? I mean the bonuses for bows and blades and also (at least for BG2 with fixpack) the sleep and charm resistance.

If you want to remove all racial restrictions then you could use ToBEX to avoid having to resort to Shadowkeeper. If it's specifically elven bards you're interested in I feel the same way as you and have adjusted my installation to allow this using Turambar tweaks - see readme.

I wouldn’t use shadowkeeper as a first choice because the other things like saves & resistances won’t be correct without a lot of effort on your part.
IMO the better way is to find & open a file called clsrcreq.2da it will be in your override folder & using notepad to put 1 instead of 0 in the Elf column next to bard.

Also note that the Elf bonus is hard coded into the game and as far as I’m aware non-fighter classes don’t get it... I haven’t tested an Elf bard so it would be interesting to see if they do have the bonus.

The file CLSRCREQ.2da doesn't exist in the vanilla game, you'll only find it in your overide if you're using ToBEx.
The G3 fixpack's charm and sleep immunities will "work" anytime if your race = elf, being implemented as race targeted effects (albeit they're bugged in v9 of the fixpack anyway, and protect from many things which they shouldn't - the "test release" available from G3 fixes this).
The elf THAC0 bonus with swords and bows should kick in immediately after changing your race, iirc you can see it in the combat log, but not your character sheet.

Hmm, in vanilla BG1 (which I am using) changing the bard to Elf with GateKeeper indeed gives the +1 with elven weapons, at least the longbow. I just tested it and my Thac0 was reduced by 1 point, at least in my character sheet. I dont know with BG2, though.
