About An unofficial prequel to BioWare's MASS EFFECT videogame franchise

Description
RED SAND: A MASS EFFECT FAN FILM, starring none other than the voice of Commander Shepard himself, Mark Meer. Produced by the students and faculty of the Digital Video Program at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona.

Plot Outline
Serving as a prequel to the MASS EFFECT game series,"Red Sand" is set 35 years before the time of Commander Shepard and tells the story of the discovery of ancient ruins on Mars. Left behind by the mysterious alien race known as the Protheans, the ruins are a treasure trove of advanced technology and the powerful Element Zero, an energy source beyond humanity's wildest dreams. As the Alliance research team led by Dr. Averroes (Ayman Samman) seeks to unlock the secrets of the ruins, a band of marauders living in the deserts of Mars wants the ruins for themselves. Addicted to refined Element Zero in the form of a narcotic nicknamed "Red Sand" which gives them telekinetic "biotic" powers, these desert-dwelling terrorists will stop at nothing to control the ruins and the rich vein of Element Zero at its core. Standing between them and their goal are Colonel Jon Grissom (Mark Meer), Colonel Lily Sandhurst (Amy Searcy), and a team of Alliance soldiers tasked with defending the ruins at all costs. At stake - the future of humanity's exploration of the galaxy, and the set up for the MASS EFFECT storyline loved by millions of gamers worldwide.

Interesting.
I thought my mind was playing tricks on me when I stumbled on pictures of the project, cuz I couldn't understand the foreign language on the site and thought it was just photoshop work.

I'm just curious does Red Sand imply anything? Because you know in the ME universe it's a illegal drug.

EDIT: Ah I just saw it. Your implying Mars. Wll theirs some small ME fiction for ya. And some people might mistake it for that.

@Mass Effect Player

Actually you are half right, we use the drug in the film as well :) it's also what they refer to the terrorist marauder group on mars in the film!

probably gonna be better than Hollywood's inevitable terrible version of ME, cause we know how good they are with video game movies

Looks very interesting. Two questions though (and you probably can't answer those yet anyway bit still, I am wondering...)

1. Based on the plot, the movie takes place in 2048/49. Shepard, however, was born in 2054. So will Mark Meer be playing/voicing a different character in the movie, will he function as some kind of narrator or will we see some scenes of a later time when Shepard is already grown up?

2. Does the title Red Sand refer to Mars only or does it also have a connection with the drug, that can induce temporary biotic abilities?

I wish u best of luck. Hopefully if it turns out to be really great, you guys just might attract Hollywood to help make the ME Movie. Tell them I said they should play the games and read the books/comics for better understanding.

And on another note, what made your group decide to make a ME fan film in the first place? Oh and how did you get Mark Meer?

I thought the ME movie was being made by Legendary Pictures and directed by Zach Snyder, same team that did 300 and Watchmen, both of which I thought were pretty good.

IMO, any silliness/campiness in those movies was due to the source material, a comic book for each. Snyder was extremely faithful in recreating it in film version, I think.

@Mass Effect Player, We contacted him through his agent, he loved the script and agreed to come act in it. we had to shift our shoot schedule around a bit, but it was worth it!
