Correct me if I'm wrong, but there has never been a time when you need more than 10 intimidate score, and only once do you need max charm which when you have to persuade Ethan Jeong. If this is the case, what was the point of having 11-12 intimidate points if you never needed them?
If I'm wrong can you give any situations (Main story or sidequests) where you need more than 10 intimidate?
What's the point of max intimidate, if you never need 12 intimidate points?

The number of points invested in the skill do have an impact on how many carry over to ME2 (and then ME3).
Not much else that I can think of right now, but you can always look up the masseffect.wiki

There isn't much in the ME wiki. I just need to know if there is any point in getting more renegade for me at this point. I like to choose my dialogue the way I want to and not get restricted to renegade or paragon, so if anyone can tell me if no more than 10 intimidate is actually needed, it would be very helpful. This is a fresh Shepard so I don't have the benefit of having charm/intimidate from preview playthroughs.

I think I've come across this in the wiki (could have been the morality guide): If you don't charm/intimidate Saren on Virmire to make him doubt Sovereign, you'll need the 12 points in charm or intimidate on the Citadel later.

Actually Paragon/Renegade points have another effect, besides conversation.
Paragon
10% – Opens 2 Charm ranks. Gives 1 Charm point.
25% – Opens 2 Charm ranks. Gives 1 Charm point. Bonus: 10% shorter First Aid cooldown.
50% – No charm ranks/points. Bonus: 10% maximum health.
75% – Opens 2 Charm ranks. Gives 1 Charm point. Bonus: 5% reduction in cooldown on all powers.
Renegade
10% – Opens 2 Intimidate ranks, gives 1 Intimidate point.
25% – Opens 2 Intimidate ranks, gives 1 Intimidate point, 10% reduction in weapon/powers cooldown.
50% – 1 health regeneration per second.
75% – Achievement, opens 2 Intimidate ranks, gives 1 Intimidate point, 5% increase in damage/duration on all weapons and powers
Usually I invest three or four points and then I use the exploit on Noveria for opening more ranks and gainning additional points, because frankly, is possible to never invest a single point on those, but you need to do multiple playthroughs with the same profile, wich is tiresome.
