The amount of people saying Witcher 1/2 in this thread have almost made me lose my faith in humanity ...
I'll normally keep playing until I finish all my games, even if I'm not enjoying them, even if its only on the basis that "I paid for this so if I quit, its a waste". A game would have to be spectacularly horrible in my eyes, or just outright broken, for me to not finish it.
But there was one game that I gave up on recently.
King Arthur the Role Playing Wargame. I got a free copy with my subscription to PC Gamer UK. I'm sure the developers were hoping lots of players would enjoy it, and buy the just released KA2.
Anyway, it wasn't a bad game. I actually kind of enjoyed it. As an RPG fan who has also played about 100 hours of Total War Shogun 2 (although hardly an RTS expert) I saw alot of interesting ways that the 2 genres had been mixed.
Unfortunately, after about 15 hours, I got into a war with another faction which seemed totally unwinnable. To begin with their military strength rating was vastly superior to mine. I managed to take advantage of some poor AI to win pretty much every battle against them, but after about 5-10 more hours I hadn't made any progress towards capturing their towns and actually winning the war. It seemed like no matter how many of their generals I captured and left to die in my dungeon, they always had more coming. In this game, generals are not built, they are recruited by completing quests and all have actual names. So in theory all I had to do was methodically pick off their generals while keeping mine alive, and evetually I'd be able to push forward. And then I noticed something. I killed a general called "Sir Geralt", whose name stuck in my head because I'm a fan of the Witcher. I was sure I'd already killed him before. Sure enough, an hour or so later, I killed him again.
That's when I realised that every time I killed a general, s/he was just respawning to lead another army. But if I couldn't kill them for good, I'd never be able to make any progress. Such a shame for a nice game to spoil itself in that way, and its probably put me off buying the sequel as well

Spore - once I get to the space stage it just becomes a boring tedious piece of garbage.
