That was my entire point. People who favour VS over Liara inevitably project their real life desires onto the VS, saying, yes, it's more realistic, so it's better. It's not about perfect, it's about the level of support, a gf like Ashley is the kind to always be meckering and criticising, always fighting. Sure, that is more realistic but you can get enough of that in real life, so why desire that in a game? I want to escape into a fantasy because you can find tons of Ashley's in real life but almost no Liaras (nevermind her being an Asari, lol).
I'm not sure if you really got Ashley's character - or the events she's thrown in - and why she acts like she does.
Just because she's having her own opinion and does ask questions it doesn't mean she's going to be a pain in the ass in a relationship.
Sure, it's a RP - you can go for whatever you want. Now, I'd say I might do stuff in games (like shooting foes) I can't and won't do in R/L. However, some parts are set, mostly the emotional stuff. I'm no d*ck in R/L, therefore none of my Shepards are d*cks in ME. I enjoy a good and challenging relationship far more than one that's based on devotion. Heck with it, I'm a goddamn maverick ... a devoted woman is clingy, and that's something I don't enjoy in R/L, why should I go for it in a game? Some things are "set in stone". What I can't enjoy in R/L I won't do in a game, especially when it comes to that emotional stuff

Just one thing to think about:
Ashley drags your ass out of hell. You can be in the middle of a firefight, bullets everywhere, and Ash comes after you.
Liara waits till you face the fiend before she's even going after you. She waits until you're dead before doing something.
Should give you an idea of both characters
