I thought Tali was worse (her pilgrimage stuff, Veetor, the geth discussions....but she has feelings for Shepard)

Everyone does.  Shepard is a walking libido machine.  B)

But you at least take Tali with you.  You can leave Garrus behind and he's still buddy buddy. :alien:

I wasn't aware of that.  I thought only the introduction was really changed.  Then again, I've never romanced Garrus anyway, so I wouldn't have figured it out anyway. =]

Yep, some people go the "my LI is better, has a deeper feeling, is more equal to, blah blah than all the others."

All of the romances have pros & cons ... all characters have pros & cons. So those debates are useless to me and add no value to my gameplays.

Discussing the pros & cons of relationships and how one may RP that romance is interesting to me. I read a person explain his RP of why that Shepard hated Liara for bringing him back once and it had me understand his hatred and anger. It wasn't a "I hate Liara Waaaaa" response but a well-thought out RP of that Shepard and how events impacted him.

My nephew explained to me why his Shepard hated Ashley and it fit his RP. He actually likes her but he was doing what the game encourages ... he was creating a Shepard different from him.

Quoted for truth.

Hey, I think I remember that dude who wrote it. At least I read that one too - about "Shepard hates Liara for bringing him/her back". I wrote something similar as dialogue or so ... and the entire stuff was caused by ethical issues: "Am I still Shepard"? That's what ME2!Shepard asks himself at some point.
And yes, it works.

^ Actually, Liara doesn't have the Cipher. Only Shep, Shiala & Saren do (two of whom are dead, Shiala may or may not be dead). She doesn't understand Vigil on Ilos.

But she doesn't make any point about the Cipher being important, so... yeah.

I'm pretty sure Liara does have the Cipher. She was mucking around in Shep's head was she not? It's what she used to get them to Ilos. Shep can not reach Ilos until he has the Cipher and melded with Liara.

As for not understanding the AI (Vigil speaks in a language all of them can understand) I took that as the constant reusing of dialogue (like Liara suddenly turning renegade even though it made no sense). Even Shepard doesn't fully understand the AI thingy. He says "I recognize some of the words." Liara could've gotten the Cipher much later than Shep and had a harder time deciphering it.

Actually, she does not have the cipher and explains that is the reason that Shepard understands prothean and not her and whoever you took to Ilos.

His saying that he doesn't understand read as he didn't feel a need to tell his team that the message was that there was "no hope". Would you repeat to them what you are hearing? Not me. I would say I didn't understand and keep my group hopeful.

I wouldn't mind if the friendships or rivalries with characters were the devs choice IF it was there since the beginning, since ME1, but forcing now, at the end of the road is extremely annoying and will certainly ruin my experience in the game.

Soon will appear people saying we complain too much. This is called feedback. Criticism like this is what makes these games better.

Ah. I must've missed that (or forgot about it). They could still retcon it. :P

Or he just didn't fully understand the message there's that too.

You can HC he was lying sure. Mine wouldn't see the point.

Well it doesn't necessarily need a retcon....

Liara:  Hello Shepard.
Shepard:  Liara, what are you doing in my room?
Liara:  Oh, I have my ways.
Shepard:  That, that didn't answer the question... why am I tied down?
Liara:  There's something I want, Shepard, something only you can give me...
Shepard:  ...err, no haublo engles?
Liara:  Now now, Shepard, not giving me what I want would be... disasterous to your heatlh.
Shepard:  EDI!?
Liara:  She's taking a little Shadow Broker induced nap... now...
Shepard:  Boo, go!
Boo: ...
Liara:  Now, Shepard, give me your Cipher!

I had a long response to this topic but erased it because this thread has come up way too many times. It's just another Liara loves Shepard more than the VS thread. It's another Liara is creepy and I wish she could just die. It's another Kaidan is sooo boring and whiny and Ashley is such a racist or religious thread. Another I hate all of them but __is the best ever!!! So yea no what is the point.

But my boyfriend is better than your boyfriend! If I write that in all caps and then tell you how you are stupid for liking that character because my way is the right way ... if I grab some lines, highlight them to show you that my interpretation is the only truth will you change your mind? You know you want to say YES.

Seriously, I love all three characters as friends and in romances so I feel your pain ... But look at it this way, we have all three back in ME3. Sadly two of them (VS) not in the same game but they are all back.

But she doesn't. Period.
She's an entirely different kind of love. That's the kind of love I wouldn't go for in R/L as well - a "devoted GF" is not what I'm looking for. I want an equal. That's the VS, or in my case, Ashley. I'd go that far and put Miranda in the same league.
Liara's romance is -completely- different from the VS romance. It's depicted as "perfect". The romance of the VS is depicted as "realistic".
If you love "perfect" relationships, you'll see Liara's as the BEST love of all. That's okay.
I, however, dislike "perfect", "perfect" is boring, at least if there's nothing to do to achieve perfection.
Perfection should be achieved by completing each other - that's the challenge, that makes a romance interesting.

That's why I like the VS (Ashley) romance far more - and it's the better romance for me.
Because it's not perfect, it's not based on devotion of one partner. It's a romance between equals.

That was my entire point. People who favour VS over Liara inevitably project their real life desires onto the VS, saying, yes, it's more realistic, so it's better. It's not about perfect, it's about the level of support, a gf like Ashley is the kind to always be meckering and criticising, always fighting. Sure, that is more realistic but you can get enough of that in real life, so why desire that in a game? I want to escape into a fantasy because you can find tons of Ashley's in real life but almost no Liaras (nevermind her being an Asari, lol).

Wait! Liara is "perfect" to your Shepard? Dang!

With EW she is bull-headed, pushes Shepard away and at times even closes off from her. From the moment that they met they have argued and in ME2 Shepard wanted to kick her butt because she seemed so frickin' removed. Then after Shepard fell how many feet Liara never even looked back. What?

Ashley has more warmth than Liara but part of that is Ashley is human while Liara is asari. While Ash tells you what she feels, Liara at times waits for Shepard to make the move. Those dang asaris and their longevity, it skews the need to address things asap. Why rush when you have another 900 years. Image IPB

There would be challenges unique to being with a different species ... I'm a Californian and my ex was from Sevilla, Spain so we clashed over our different cultures, could you imagine different worlds? Now that would be a stick of dynamite.

It's all in the role-play.  Image IPB

I'm not sure if you really got Ashley's character - or the events she's thrown in - and why she acts like she does.
Just because she's having her own opinion and does ask questions it doesn't mean she's going to be a pain in the ass in a relationship.

Sure, it's a RP - you can go for whatever you want. Now, I'd say I might do stuff in games (like shooting foes) I can't and won't do in R/L. However, some parts are set, mostly the emotional stuff. I'm no d*ck in R/L, therefore none of my Shepards are d*cks in ME. I enjoy a good and challenging relationship far more than one that's based on devotion. Heck with it, I'm a goddamn maverick ... a devoted woman is clingy, and that's something I don't enjoy in R/L, why should I go for it in a game? Some things are "set in stone". What I can't enjoy in R/L I won't do in a game, especially when it comes to that emotional stuff

Just one  thing to think about:
Ashley drags your ass out of hell. You can be in the middle of a firefight, bullets everywhere, and Ash comes after you.
Liara waits till you face the fiend before she's even going after you. She waits until you're dead before doing something.

Should give you an idea of both characters B)

Since when are fan fiction situations a good way to prove a point?

So I was talking the other day to a friend about this and I began to realise that many people criticise Liara for not being critical of Shepard and love the fact that the VS is so critical of him, never mind the fact that Liara almost went through hell to save you, even giving your corpse to Cerberus in the vague hope something might happen. That is undying love, sure in real life relationships are all about naggging and putting your partner down so I suppose that is the appeal of the VS romance over Liara's but I would rather indulge the fantasy of what does not exist in real life to be honest.

Your take?

Because of that, I can't take you seriously. So peace.

Uhhm ... that's not a fan fiction, jreezy.
Where was Liara when the Normandy went down? Ashley / Kaidan didn't want to leave the Normandy without Shepard. They left because Shepard gave the order ... ;)

Whatever, this won't lead to anything ... signing off.

Rolled eyes, Liara doesn't want to leave either, I guess you never romanced her. She only leaves because Shepard orders her to do so.

Go to the 4 minute mark if you don't believe me.
