Hello, I seem to have prob. with Mass Effect (1) ordered from GAME.co.uk (physical item). I received 2 DVD's yet only DVD (1) was used for inst, DVD (2) well I didn't figure out for what it is. I inst. the game and launched it. The Mass Effect screen popped up and seconds later my mouse seems to be loading and my screen was frozen. After pressing Alt+Ctrl+Del I saw that the game got launched twice. One “ME” is not responding the second “ME” is. When I end the “ME” which is not responding both of them got canceled and I'm back at the start. I followed the link below https://help.ea.com/connect-with-us but didn't really get any help from the live chat option exept to try and reinstal the game. So I am hoping that anyone of you might know where my prob lies.
Some info that might help:
-Operating System: Windows XP Professional
-Processor: Intel® Core2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz (2 CPUs)
-Memory: 2046MB RAM
-DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
-Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

The only thing from what you wrote that I can comment on is that the European disk had a second disk strictly for other languages than English. If you haven't obtained and patched with the 1.02 patch, you will want to do that right away.

Well I did download Patch 1.01a as 1.02, inst both but the game still doesn't work. As mentioned before after I press »play« the logo of ME appears few sec later nothing happens. Looks like my screen freeze, but when pressing the “windows button” on the keyboard or “alt+ctrl+del “ you can see 2x ME windows for launch. One which is not responding one which is. If you wait a few sec the not responding one vanishes. When pressing the second ME which is running, nothing happens (should let me enter the game). You just stay on desktop screen. So basically I am not able to enter the game at all. As well it seems that the DVD is not required for reading. I really don't know what to do...

What version driver are you running on your Nvidia card?
Also, you could try browsing to the file masseffect.exe and running that directly instead of going through the launcher.

I thought on the first launch it runs the config utility, and thus you may be having an issue with it. You might try running the config directly and see if anything is out of kilter or if the settings can be adjusted better to your machine. Also I think you need to be connected to the internet for the first launch as well, so make sure you have an open line for it to use, ie no firewall blocking and on the internet.

Driver Name: nv4_disp.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0011.5822 (English)
And about launching ME.exe, same happens. If I wait till the second ME (which is not responding vanishes ) and click then the one remaining my screen resolution gets changes to 640x480 (I did change it in the config. options into 1280x1024) as well as all colors get mixed up making my screen go into standby-mode out of which I can't awake it. Result is PC restart.

You should have a somewhat newer graphics driver. See if 197.xx works for this game. Don't try anything really new, because your card is so very old now.
