Isn't the maximum age Gillian could possibly be now is 16, depending on when she was actually 12 and if this happens in 2183 or not? I haven't read the excerpt, so I don't know exactly what date it is (and it sounds like I won't be reading it at all...). I'm not even sure that's right actually.

I wouldn't even know Gillian was autistic if I didn't know beforehand. Dietz has this horrid style of using brief sentences with few details to tell events more than describe them.
The thing is, this style can be used well. Dietz, however, does not know how to use it well.

Stop being silly - she's 18 and therefore useful in a romatic subplot.

Absolutely they can. As a writer, though, you would normally be expected to tell the story of how they did that. Skipping forward a few years and saying "in the meantime, Gillian got better" is, to say it mildly, a dreadful cop out.

I'm not saying I need it to be blindingly obvious in her behavior, though I wouldn't expect it to vanish completely considering how she acted in Ascension. But in Ascension we were given glimpses into Gillian's mind and there is not the lightest similarity in the girl that appeared in Ascension to the girl that appeared in this excert in either behavior or what I could glean of her thoughts from her reactions and what Dietz outright told us she was thinking.dreman9999 wrote...

This, when we last saw her Gillian was, quite frankly, an absolute mess. Just skipping over all of it is just ridiculous.

BS.
She had a dedicated personal tutour who was more of a father for 4(I mean 5 based on theis crasy books timeline.)
years. She turned out well, he did a great job. End story arc about that.

..One day Gillian woke up and felt a change in her body, It might be because of the accelerated aging but she noticed that her bosom was larger and hair began to appear in new places, She realized that she was becoming an adult and just decided to be normal, After all if she was normal and wore make-up like all the other girls she would find a boy and marry him and then her life would be complete..

This is what you said "You've misunderstood, but it's my fault for using the word "hero" in place of the more accurate word "protagonist".CaptainZaysh wrote...
"A lot of stories don't have a clear hero or a hero at all. Not all stories need one to be a good story."
They have done plenty so far in the first 50 pages. Anderson has literally done the impossible. He actually got the Council to consider the Reaper's existence instead of them just dismissing it. Shepard could never do it even after a Reaper attacked the Citadel.I want him to do something in the book, please. Is that an unreasonable expectation of the author? That he will have the protagonist do something in the book?
Gillian is the main reason why the Quarians were able to beat back the slavers.
Which is fine. So why don't I care about her quest for vengeance? It's because Dietz has given me no reason to like Gillian, or want her to succeed. She is a very bad protagonist because the reader has no reason to care about what she wants to achieve. The loss of a parent is a profound moment in a person's life; autistic people often process grief in atypical ways. Is this not an incredible opportunity for a writer to really make us feel something for this girl? How isolated she is, because she doesn't even grieve like everybody else?
Like I said before I believe what Cerberus did to her was possibly the cause of her mental disorder. Since she stopped taking those drugs she has likely gotten much better. Doesn't mean I don't think it could have been done better but your previous post stating she isn't coping normally is off since someone will be reasonably pissed and sad if there parent was killed.
Actually that sounds kinda stupid. That would be implying that she wants to get vengeance to impress the soldiers around her instead of the fact that her father was killed."Autistic girl swears vengeance in order to please the soldiers she's with, and only during the quest for vengeance comes to terms with her grief" is a hell of a f**king story. Gillian is the protagonist in that one. But that one ain't Deception.
Deception so far isn't good but the initial sound of your idea doesn't sound good either.
