Here is another hole for ya, how the heck did Kai Leng who had an injured leg and needed a cane to walk make a great escape out of an auction room full of other aliens and two security guards?

F*ck you, that's how.

(BTW, this is meant to be taken as a joke)

It's how I feel about the newest novel.

The quarians were a nomadic race who were typically a bit smaller than the average human. As was typical for his kind, the petitioner was dressed in a motley collection of clothing, held together by a variety of straps and metal fasteners. His face was obscured by a reflective visor and breathing apparatus.

No, that's not typical for his kind. They wear entirely sealed environmental suits. Thought to be fair, I don't know if this is just a really bad description of one of their suits or a mistake. Either way...

I sounds literally like a physical description of a screenshot of a Quarian. What you might guess they were wearing if you didn't actually know any of the back story.

Was wondering about that. Not sure WTF it's supposed to be. Quarian suits are hardly "motley scraps," and are frequently described as beautiful.

I'm a major fan of almost every bioware game (including DA2) and book I've read, but this...this is like the Baldur's gate novelization

Well. *rubs hands together* Based on the reaction to this thread -- even didy is tearing this book a new one tonight -- I sure can't wait to get my grubby little paws on the excerpt in a few moments!

I did read the intro at school earlier. Not bad, but I couldn't help but notice there was some sort of implication that those Prothean star charts at the auction could have led to another galaxy. I... had hoped it was inconsistent writing that gave off an erroneous impression and that Dietz didn't actually think the asari were going to... you know... fly to another galaxy. But now I'm... not so sure.

Maybe they can surf there on their mass effect field skateboards.

Once you discover mass effect fields, anything is possible. Good luck.

Hey, did you know Tantalus drive cores are standard equipment now? Even old batarian slaver vessels have 'em.

Somehow this bothers me even more than the trap thing. Don't ask me why.

And more:

“I guess I will,” Anderson replied. “As you know, Miss Sanders and I agreed to follow up behind the investigation of what took place at the Grissom Academy and, after considerable study, we believe that the Reapers were involved.”

Actually, no, I don't know that, because that's not what happened at the end of Retribution. Anderson undertook to do so of his own initiative, not because he was officially requested to. An official request that almost certainly wouldn't have happened, considering how he left his former job.

Also, I'd just like to point out that Dietz resorted to actually using the phrase "As you know...", which is usually only seen nowadays in parodies of clumsy expository dialogue.

Mass Effect: Deception is damn awful. Whatever small part of my inner fan boy that wanted me to actually read this book has been utterly crushed by the sheer awful quality contained within. I have seen Fan Fiction written with far superior quality than what has been displayed here.

Really, this CAN'T be an actual canon novel released for Mass Effect? Some part of me thought that this was a damn Internet trolling or some rough overall story draft. If that is the rate the story progresses, then that novel is going to be god damned short. I was actually reading Hitman: Enemy Within right now; another work of the same author, and the quality here has shown clearly that this is not a good author. I just hope that the errors within are the result of a rushed schedule from publishers or something: because this is not acceptable of an actual novel with a price tag!

Dietz obviously does not know his universe from anything more than a brief glance at the wiki. For one instance: the Bartarians call the Quarians gas-suckers (He must of got his series confused or something) when they actually inhale oxygen. There are so many plot holes here that I can expect characters to literally fall through them. This novel is nothing more than a total butchering of Mass Effect altogether.

I read Halo: The Flood, and that was another utter waste of my time. I'm usually the optimistic kind of fan who usually steps up to defend their game, but no fan of Mass Effect could even say they enjoyed Deception.

I've had this book on order for a while and I'm half tempted to cancel it. I enjoyed the first 3 books even with the various issues. But between Dietz's writing 'style', the editing errors and the lack of familiarity with the game universe this just looks like it's going to be bad. And I'm not even talking about the age discrepancy of Gillian, I've watched enough soap operas and Star Trek to swallow an age retconn for a young character.

The only reason I'm not canceling the order at this time is that there isn't a whole lot else I could get for $7 and hey at least it's something Mass Effect to keep me occupied for a few hours between now and the release date.

Occasionally, he clumsily inserts exposition in parentheses.  For instance:

"Citadel Security Services (C- Sec)"

Yeah that too. And it still bugs the hell out of me that this takes place on the batarian homeworld.   It's a totalitarian police-state, for Christ's sake.

I guess it was far too difficult to just search certain things on the wiki page or perhaps ask someone who knows better.

Then again, Dietz wouldn't be a complete hack that way.

Is the phrase "also known as C-sec" a problem? Hooboy. What a writer.

This is what is so frustrating. The info is freely available. He wouldn't even need to play the games.
