I showed this Excerpt with people who don't care for Mass Effect, and they said that the writing for this was amateurish and 9 grade level at best, even ignoring the factual errors it's a terrible book on a fundamental level.
This reminds me of what I was thinking. That I was quite heartened to find out that the reaction we are all having is pretty much the same. Nice to not be arguing.

i don't think there's anybody that can argue that the writing is complex or that the story is particularly full of intrigue....you'll either buy it like me, deal with the problems or you won't, you'll read the me wiki to get the gist....don't blame anybody either way....

Very disappointing, I am a big fan of the first three books, to the extent that I have actually read them multiple times (I know, I know, madness), but I am breaking my lurking silence to say that I will not be purchasing this one and I hope there is some kind of statement from Bioware on the egregious errors made in this book.
Was reading through all of them in order leading up to the demo coming out. Was in the middle of Ascension, and took a break to read through the excerpt. Hoo boy, what a bad move. Great way to kill the excitement.

would have been better off with another dark horse series with mac writing it seems.....not suprisingly it was karpshyn on the first 3 novels, with a connection to the game and now somebody with no vested interest has glaring errors in their 'efforts'

Karpyshan had all the info first-hand. But even second-hand info would have worked. It sems like Dietz didn't even have that. Like we talked about last night, his descriptions of Quarians in parts make it seems like he was given nothing but photographs, without actually understanding what they were of. And there are a ton of similar gaffes.

I quite liked that bit! I thought it was one of the few bits of writing that actually sounded like it had been produced by a human being with a talent for using words to paint mental pictures. Roly-poly volus. It's succinct. It's pleasing. And it could have been way worse. "As you know, earth person, we volus are not physically adept..."

Well said! Ironically, I was in the middle of re-reading Retribution myself when I read the excerpt and it has totally killed my enthusiasm for finishing.

Anderson thought Kahlee was a bit too attentive where Nick was concerned. The boy was eighteen for god’s sake.

Ok so if. Gillian is 18. The only way this could work with the story line is if the year was 2188. I think in the leaked demo for ME3 said 2187 (or implied), so not to far off I guess.
The timeline I've seen indicates that both Retribution and Deception take place in 2186. In Retribution, Nick is 15. In Deception, he is suddenly 18. There is really no way to make this work.

Has anyone seen 'Star Wars Uncut'? Got a bit boring after a while but it's Star Wars edited together out of 15 second clips hundreds of folks sent in.
We could do that with this preview: each take a page and re-write what's there, then we put em back together. There's no way in hell it could be worse than what we've read.

Also the complete lack of comments from Bioware in this thread is kind of hilarious. Almost 30 pages of complaining about a book uninterrupted.

Wat. Did this guy even read a freaking summery of Drews previous work? Gillian I can just facedesk at and move on, since her age in 2186 is never technically stated in the books, since Acension takes place before that. Nick, however, is definitely stated as being 15 in Retribution, and just starting to go through puberty. So now he just woke up one day into the body of an 18 year old? WTF!

It's funny to try and work it out but none of it works. Ascension takes place two months after ME1. That's stated explicitly at the start of that book. And that would make it 2183. So three years later in 2186, both Gillian and Nick should be 15. Nick is referred to as 15 in Retribution. And then later in 2186 in Deception, Nick is 18. Figure that one out, why don't you.

This I would have never known he was 18 unless it was actually stated.
Now does anyone think this is Dietz trolling? Seriously The Flood wasn't that bad to me but this seems like he is purposely trying to ****** us off for the lulz.
