Just saying, he had no 10 week excuse. And neither did the guys reviewing his work.

It's got to be the explanation.  Seriously, the guy is a professional novelist.  He must know rules as fundamental as "show, don't tell."  He must know the story needs a strong protagonist.  It's inconceivable that he doesn't.

This is the question that was eating me: why is it so bad, so very bad?  And I think we have our answer.  Time limitations.  Time limitations force you to do imperfect work; extreme time limitations force you to choose between delivering dreadful work or not delivering.

Dietz was in the Navy, and he pays the rent with his writing.  He knows that delivering quality work is a lesser concern than the importance of actually delivering work, even if it's not great work, when needed.  Like Patton said, "A good plan, violently executed now, is better than the perfect plan next week."  I think he must have been given a stupid deadline, and done what he could within that deadline.  It's the only thing that can explain why it is so bad.  So very, very bad.

Honestly, though, I would have been content with the artlessness if he'd just gotten the details right and had coherent plot points.

I don't like his writing style. I don't like it at all. It feels expositional, while being overly simplistic. I've so far only read the prologue, but that felt contrived enough as it is.

"But most of all he didn’t like the Batarians themselves. Not because so many of them were pirates, slavers, but because they were aliens and therefore a threat to the human race. That made him an extremist, not to mention a racist, and that was fine with Leng."

Really? Really? Does Leng honestly admit to being a full fledged extremist? I cannot recall in Revelations any one time where he acknowledged himself as an extremist. He, like the Illusive man, thought their methods were what was necessary for the preservation of the human race. That seems to me that he doesn't fashion himself an extremist in the slightest.

Time was not the issue. He got the job back in 2010, around July. He had more then a year.

Professional novelist doesn't really mean much.

You don't know that.  Maybe he only had a short time to present the draft to the publishers.  The game launch date was pushed back, remember: maybe they originally thought they needed it by October so it would be typeset, edited, marketed, printed and distributed to be on the shelves in time.

I got the article right there. You don't believe an actual fact?

And the game being pushed back would only mean he'd have more time to work on it.

It was also meant to be release in December. So it also got extended.

Yeah? He's a professional whose "profession" is writing for a living. That doesn't absolve him of mediocrity.

In fact, being a professional "writer" is about as vague and misinformed a label as any.

Profession just means you're a writer who's paid for his work.

Paul Anderson is paid for being the writer for the Resident Evil movies. You call him a professional writer?

I believe the article, I'm saying you're making an assumption that his deadline was a year after he was engaged.

Okay.  Article in July, planned release for December.  Ten weeks from late July would mean the manuscript deadline was mid-October.

Could the publishers have wanted the manuscript a month and a half before release?  I'm no expert but that doesn't seem outrageous to me.  So maybe he did have a ten week deadline.  It'd answer a lot of questions for me.

(And just because the devs got an extension doesn't mean they'd go back to the author and say, hey, that manuscript we already paid you for, d'you wanna work on it for a couple more months?)

It's unreasonable to give someone ten weeks to write a novel and expect anything more than mediocrity.  Ten week novel deadlines are designs for mediocrity.  Which, when you think about it, might explain why game novels are really often quite mediocre.  The writers got to spend as much time on the whole novel as they might normally spend crafting a chapter.

Hm!  I misread the year.  So how long did he have?

The article in question said...
he did say the Mass Effect[/i]novel was "... due to the publisher in early 2011."

So...five months, minimum.  That's still a tightish deadline (I think the typical novel takes a year) but not tight enough to explain why it's so bad.

You have GOT to be trolling.

You take what Mr. Dietz said about the deadline of his Halo novel, apply it to Deception and act as if that's the only reasonable explanation?

Yeah, okay. You do that.

Anyone who has contributed to this thread could easily take a single pass through this book in a one work day, and correct most of the problems easiy. It's not that hard. Did Dietz not have a day or two to sit down and make sure this stuff was correct and made sense?
