And what's with this Level One, Level Two, Level Three classification of biotics nonsense? Did Dietz get confused by the amp designations or something? Nothing like this has ever been used before in any of the games, comics or novels.

I'm guessing it's just something they do at "the Cube" - sort of like how a martial arts dojo have different coloured belts - rather than a some sort of galactic standard.

That's what I thought too, until it came up again in the Gillian section.  We're supposed to think it's a general classification system...that we've never ever heard of despite two novels having large parts set at an academy for biotic children.

Well, L2, L3 and L5 have been thrown around. Aren't they short for Level 2, Level 3, and Level 5?

Those are just the implants.  And as Didy said before, they aren't a true indication of strength, not alone at least.

About Gillian, I think it's just a retcon then an actual error unnoticed. Why they want her 18, I have no idea, since I don't think she's a romance option.

But, it seems this book (which I take with a grain of salt) seems to have some leveling system that really, to me, doesn't fit well.  So much goes into biotics is that it's hard to really classify them.  Sure, implants can help someone reach their potential, but only to a point.  Peaks, valleys, uncontrollable outbursts, focus time, skill...you can keep going.  Some species are stronger than others (Asari are very powerful, while Krogan are rather weak) as well, which complicates it further.

Sure it's difficult to classify them, but you still want something you can put on a resume, which is fairly simple and standardised across species.  "Certified as a level 2 biotic by blah blah" is simpler than having to put down many newtons you can lift and throw and what's the radius of your singularity.

The point is, if such a galaxy-wide classification system existed, we would have heard of it before now. Especially given that, again, two of the previous novels involved the Ascension Project, and significantly so. Hell, Kahlee's entire job there revolved around making such assessments.

It's not as if we ever went into much detail about such matters before.

I think that is a retcon to but its a retarded one.

Also isn't this a new author? I would be surprised if it wasn't because Drew is usually pretty good with canon info. This really needs a editor. The story is interesting but the mistakes I am now seeing makes it pretty bad.

First time I've ever considered cancelling my pre-order of a Mass Effect product. The writing wasn't too great in the other novels, but I still enjoyed them. This is just... too much.

Maybe I'll wait to see if all these problems are fixed in the actual novel before actually buying it.

Yeah, it's weird that it's not mentioned before, so it's probably either a retcon or a mistake.  I just tend to feel that it's a good retcon or mistake, so it doesn't bother me over much.

Yeah, other than, you know, all the detail they went into.  And something this basic would have come up.  Is that so hard to grasp?

In all fairness the biotic leveling system could be a new thing.

I can tweet Mac about it, but I don't know if I will get an answer or if he will know what I'm talking about to be honest.

We had novels and a lot of ME codex info on Biotics. We know enough about Biotics in the universe that this novel's classification of them if off.

In what way is the story interesting to you, 1136342t54?

50 pages in, I have no idea who the hero is. Is it Anderson? If so, what's he trying to do? Convince the Council about the Reapers? Rescue the boy from the cult? Why hasn't the author used his precious second chapter to convince us to like and support him in his mission, rather than on having him walk to a meeting, then have a meeting?

Is it Gillian? If so, why is our introduction to her that boring combat set piece where she killed a bunch of mooks? If her grief at her father's passing is what motivates her why was her reaction to the news so trite and cliched? She's autistic, right? Why is her reaction to grief utterly neurotypical?

Oh, also, Nick's parents supposedly live in the Terminus, on a poverty-stricken world that had a recent civil war (Anhur), and yet their son is in an Alliance-sponsored program at the Grissom Academy.

I just skimmed, but I noticed some really odd word choices in addition to problems raised in the thread.

How did the krogan "utter" a grunt? Did he just say, "Grunt."?

Seriously, that's kind of weird.

I'm surprised the Cerberus guy would know what Gillian looks like since he hasn't seen her in 6 years. Even then I doubt he ever went to that Biotic School. Or been given a reason to see her picture. Or visited Grayson's house when she was a baby.

The Alliance is surely always going to jump at the chance to get their hands on a Biotic.  And parents always want to get their kids in decent schools.

It'll be wierd to read, but I'll try to get through this book anyway. Ignoring any wierd/conflicting details in there, I'm gonna assume it takes place before ME3 and that it will explain how Kai Leng becomes augmented (again, he wasn't a cyborg in Retribution, right?).

The point is that the Alliance doesn't operate out there and the name is thrown out as if there's nothing unusual about it. It's just "Oh, they live on Anhur, better call 'em."

Wait, isn't it implied in the SB dossier that Anderson does have a son? The book claims that he has no children of his own... :/

He doesn't have a son. That kid is from his ex-wife's husband.

Or if it is his kid, the wife never told him.
