Also Kai's attitude apparently is, "I hate aliens because they're different. And different things scare me."

Kai pressed the red "Think renegade thoughts" button :P

Weird how the main thing you have a problem with is who is the hero. Its been like that in the novels. The story is told from multiple view points in which they eventually come together.

A story is a tale of conflict between a character the audience likes and is emotionally involved with (the hero or protagonist) and the forces that prevent the hero reaching his goal (the antagonists).  The point of a story is that the hero struggles against great odds and develops as a person in order to achieve his goal.

This story has no hero.  We have no reason to root for (or even especially like) any of the characters.  It's a bad story.

A lot of stories don't have a clear hero or a hero at all. Not all stories need one to be a good story.

This guy really needed an editor or six.

Editing couldn't fix it.  None of it works; it has a confused storyline; there are no clear heroes; it does not have a main character; there are zero stakes.

This is seriously the most dreadful thing I've ever read in print.  And I've read The Da Vinci Code, for ****'s sake.

I'm not going to argue on its quality. While the other Mass Effect books were definite guilty pleasures this one is definitely bad - and I'm not even sure if it's so bad it's good, or just bad.

Unless Deitz completely 180'd his writing style, all the literary improvements in the world couldn't save this.

Also, why is McCann so willing to talk about how he was a Cerberus agent? You'd think that would be something to keep your mouth shut about?

Yeah, that was odd too. A time when we could have actually used some exposition, and we get nothing.

I'm surprised the Cerberus guy would know what Gillian looks like since he hasn't seen her in 6 years. Even then I doubt he ever went to that Biotic School. Or been given a reason to see her picture. Or visited Grayson's house when she was a baby.

He recognized the name, not Gillian herself.

True. Maybe I misread it.

So why does he know her name?

He was part of the team that implanted Paul Grayson, I think.  I think he was there when the Turians raided the research facility.

Yeah, but unless he was working with Grayson before he went rogue, there's no reason to know he had a daughter.

I know he says "You're father talked about you a lot". But unless he worked with him before, that's a lie.

LOL, they couldn't come up with a better reason for Kai Leng to not like the Batarians? It's not like there's a shortage of reasons to be wary of them....

Yeah that was funny how they explained it (although I doubt it will be like that in ME3)

Kai Leng didn't like Batarians because they are alien which made him a extremist. He was okay with that.

Come on give me a hint your going to explore more into that. Kai Leng isn't given to much characterization. I'm not feeling another Saren here.

Well an editor could at least make him remember the age of one of his main characters.. i would consider that a positive step forward.

Of lesser note, we were just introduced to the first asari whose name didn't end in -a.

Nope:

Kian Louros
Liselle
Mallene Calis
Morinth
Nyxeris

Sadly some people genuinely work like that - the guy is racist (and comfortable with it).  Disgusted is properly a better word than scared though.

Another of Samara's daughters, Falere, also qualifies.

As I read more of this I can't help but think that this general story in the hands of a much better writer could have been very interesting. This is just a mess. A mess with a somewhat interesting story that could be told much better.

Great Expectations

Brave New World

First two that come to mind. Both had very flawed main characters that I wouldn't call heroes.

I stand corrected...though I have no idea who the first three are.

Morinth's birth name is Mirala, however.

Liselle was Aria's daughter.

And, 1136342t54, those are still protagonists - a protagonist doesn't have to be a hero.

I was wondering that myself. I was also wondering why Mitra kind of ignored that also.

Yeah, Hendel just seems to ignore it, and takes him with them. Despite them "trying" to get away from Cerberus being the very reason they are with the Quarians.

Another small issue: why'd that volus say "Earth people"? Shouldn't he have said "Earth-clan"?

And I love how TIM seems like some cheap Mafia boss in this book. "Our credibility is at stake yo!" and that bit with the bioweapon that could apparently kill TIM needs to be scraped....

I would have liked the plot point more if it had been implied that TIM knew that it was a fake of some sort, but was just covering all of his bases just in case. Or he sent it to the auction himself to see who would show up.

Noticed that too (though -clan seems to actually be a respectful form of address). But considering that this is the same novel with such gems as "Kai Leng hated them because they were aliens. That made him an extremist, not to mention a racist..." there are much bigger issues at hand.

BUT THAT FIRST TIME RUINED THE BOOK FOR ME.
