I don't think I releasing any spoilers with this so here we go.

This is just a crticism of the party members the game provides.

When I was a mage Warden it made perfect sense that Alistair and I were joined by 2 soldiers.

After all there are a lot of soldiers around and a couple joining your party temporarily is reasonable.

But when I wasn't a mage one of the characters that joined my party was a circle mage.

This is something that seems wrong.

Generally there seem to be a lot more soldiers around so it makes much more sense to have both people soldiers.

With gameplay or party balance there is also a huge problem.  The mage that joins you cannot heal.  Healing is one fo the single most important things a mage in Dragon Age does.

What is the point of a mage that cannot do what a mage is supposed to?

This doesn't add to party balance and seems less realistic.

Why not just stick with 2 soldiers for that mission?

Mages aren't just medics; they're also offensive powerhouses who can support your melee characters with spells like Burning Weapons. Plus, if you had four melee guys, then your entire party would have to fight in close quarters with the ogre, unless they resorted to using those godawful crossbows.

Healing isn't the only thing mages can do. I went through all of Origins without ever giving Morrigan any heal spells. Merrill in DA2 can't so much as repair a paper cut, but she's the hardest hitter.

It depends on how you play a mage. I don't know that healing is what mage is supposed to do. Most of mine never had any healing spells and I almost never use Wynne. Curses, glyphs, enchanted weapons, blood magic spells... yes, the game is unbalanced. In favour of mages.

I agree with OP, for example,

If play Human Noble, you get a mage, and you have your dog.

The mage spells mostly will got resisted by the enemy and especially the big boss orge anyway and increase the hostility toward him. So unless PC or Alistair have Taunt, the mage have problem. The mage is not useful as he should be.

I agree with OP only for RP reasons. The mage is as good a companion as another guard. But it does seem odd - a mage just happening to be there rather than down on the battlefield.

Think of it this way. Duncan and Cailan want at least one mage with you and Alistair for extra magical firepower and abilities. If you are a mage, then that's cool. If you aren't they make sure one is sent with you.

Kinda true, if a mage were to be a damager/disabler it would be better to play that mage yourself; spells are quite situational, and you gotta plan the order of your tactics. Its much easier for ai mages to be healer supporters.

Well you kinda need a mage with you, well not always cause I can go the whole game without Wynne and Morrigan.

But the mage kinda gives you an "advantage" with like..burning weapons.. winters grasp. That kinda thing
If your a mage then well.. it kinda just repeats itself.

That leave a question...there is only 7 mages at Ostagar right? So only 6 will fighting darkspawn on the field, but if the PC is a mage, where this one mage go?
