While in a way I do agree with Ash I would like to say that a woman did fight off a bear to save her dog.  While an outlier unlikely to ever happen again succesfully it would still be funny as hell to bring up in that conversation.

And some people risk the fleet to save the DA.

Sometimes people risk themselves to save others.  Altruism exists.

But in Ashley's mind, that's not how things normally go.

Ash is a cynic.  You can definitely disagree with her attitude.  But one shouldn't mistake her cynicism with racism.

That's awesome and hilarious.

Some people really love their dogs. ^_^

Still I suppose it's unheard off for the dog and human to attack the bear together eh? I mean running from the bear isn't really going to get you far. :? Not unless you have a car nearby. Heck I heard it was a *bad* idea to try to run away. You'll just die on your face that way.

Some people would just use their dog as a distraction. While sad I have to repeat Ashley's words "You love your dog but it isn't human." although I would wish to not be in that situation at all or if I was I would need a gun with me.

Forget Reapers, bears are the real threat.

Shep should totally get some bears to fight the Reaper ground troops on.

The purpose of that post wasn't to disagree with your point but to show something funny to bring up in a otherwise seirous discussion.

Just strap some lasers on a bear's forehead and let em loose.

I'd hope those bastards had the bear completely ignore the dog and chase after their fleeing ass. <_<  I could see having the dog distact while you get a gun to kill the bear with but leaving it to die is messed up.

Honestly I don't go hiking for a reason. ^_^ and if I see a bear in the city I'm walking backwards (while watching the bear obviously) in the opposite direction (thankfully with how populated the streets are there's no way a bear will be wandering around for long) and calling the cops.

I take my defense of Ash seriously ;)

It was also a good opportunity to illustrate Ash's generally pessimistic outlook concerning others as opposed to racism

slimgrin, I don't mean to sound accusatory, so please don't take undue offense, but I think you're making some pretty big leaps when it comes to Ash's politics.  Dean_the_Young is right, Ash's views on foreign policy needn't at all relate to her views on any other matter.

You're making an association based on your own perceptions (don't we all), and if that's you're interpretation, than via con Dios.  But you're seeing things that aren't (necessarily) there.

If I was ever out in the woods for long periods of time I'm likely to have a weapon on me. Now if this happens in the city I'm getting in a car with my dog and leaving. I can understand why someone would leave a dog since at that point its either your dog die or both you and your dog dies unless you have a gun or are really badass.

Well Ash will admit that isn't entirely racism but its mostly due to its going to be both racism and the fact that the specific species and goverment is directly related. It isn't like I'm saying Ash is xenophobic but its actually understandable.

Or it could be both you and the dog. You'd have a better chance defeating the bear if you attacked it together. I really don't see running as helping in that scenario. The bear can outrun/runs as fast as olympically trained runners for pete's sake! You're better off conserving your energy and trying to take that thing out or at least hurt it enough that it decides you and your dog aren't worth the damn trouble and leaves.

Of course I'm used to having big dogs like Shepards and those wolf dogs (I want one so badly but I have no where to raise him =/ ) and rottweilers.(On second thought pitts are a bad idea.) Dogs that would actually be useful in a fight. :P

*reads brief blogs on bear safety*

Almost every blog I've read said running is the absolute worst thing you can do. It draws attention to you and makes you look like fleeing prey. That's not a good idea. You don't want to look like prey.

And hilariously the blog says don't even play dead with a black bear. Start fighting that thing immediately. :lol:Be loud about it too.

But of course this is *literally* about a bear though I suppose the same could apply to the Reapers. Fighting on their own is only going to get them killed and fleeing just makes them weaker in the end.

Anyways back on topic. If Ash is racist my Shep is racist. My Sheps not a racist.

Actually, if you look at that conversation carefully, when she says "It's not racism.  Not really" she's not defending herself, she defending the Council for having that attitude!  She sees it as a natural survival instinct to see to your own people first.

I wonder if ME3 will show Ash had a point.  Or was at least correct in her assesment of the Council.  How willing will other races be to come to Earth's aid when their own worlds are in danger?

I'm talking about a Grizzly bear. Having a freaking wolf wouldn't make much difference at all. This is the same bear that would easily cave in most creatures skulls by simply swiping at it. Yeah depending on the situation is much better to run while a dog is distracting it. Hell I could literally have nothing on me that could make me more threatening at all basically making any attempts at fighting it futile. If I have absolutely nothing but the clothes on my back then I'm sorry but my dog would be the best distraction. My chances of survival would easily increase.

Ash is a bit pessimistic but not overly so. The Council is likely to look out for their species first but due to actually operating as a collective entity for so many years they are likely going to be better at coexisting with other species than humanity would be initially.

I was talking about a black bear. That one will f*** you up if you try to run away (supposedly. I'm not crazy enough to try to go near one). So no depending on the bear your chances of survival do not increase just because you flee with some bears they'll decrease (especially with man eater bears). With a grizzly though they might. I still can't help but scorn you though...maybe that's because I was way too attached to my dogs. =/

But really maybe I'm just seeing you as dead either way. I'm not optimistic about fighting a bear. If I don't have a shotgun I'm pretty much screwed as far as I'm concerned.

True and it's not like humanity would be better in that situation. Everyone will look out for themselves first.

They might be more willing to cooperate with each other.  But would they feel as inclined towards humans?  Krogan?  Quarians?  Or even the associate races like the hanar or volus?

The scenario can easily be used for both the Council and Alliance. So in general its a good example either way.

ME3 wouldn't be the perfect example of her point. Reapers are so damn powerful that it would require multiple species to help each other out. The thing that would be stopping them is the unwillingness to get into a war until it hits home or some other problems that they have with other species that can't be solved quickly. From what we've seen of it many people on the Citadel don't see the war as Earth's problem until it actually hits them.

While it does show selfishness its a bit in the reverse. They don't care much about Earth's problems until it hits them
not the other way around.

I didn't say I was going to have 100% chance of living. My chances of survival will go up but depending on the situation I still probably won't make it.

Well that is something that is essentially a necessity for every species to have. Humans have the capability to help others but also have the capability to see if it is actually worth it. In ME3 case it is since they are all in the same boat.

"We Fight or we Die that's the plan!" I didn't really like that quote but it is pretty close to what needs to happen. There is no other option.

True enough.

Of course it's plain survival instinct. It's rare for people to go against it. For one thing I'm not going into a burning building to save someone just no. I don't care if it's a kid or not. I'm not risking my life for someone else's. Especially not a stranger. Cold? Maybe. But it's just a survival instinct. So no I don't see the aliens throwing humanity under the bus as particuarly cold since in the reversed situation humanity would do the same thing (unless it's Shepard.)

Ugh I hate that quote. Well they can try to pull off an Ilos though. Fighting or dying aren't the only options. Fighting or dying are just the options that first come to Shep's mind.

Obvously the fight option is generalistic. We need to gather alliances and actually create a strategy to do this but the Fighting is pretty obvious. He could have just said survive but then again in the situation they needed a more specific answer. Fight or we Die isn't good in that situation but in general its basically something that is obviously going to happen. Unless your okay with being a Reaper.

Technically, the council sitting on their thumbs in Mass Effect 2 already proved her point.

I think it goes without saying that most (if not all) races will help Shep given that he completes "insert mission here" for them. That's been the Standard Bioware M.O. for a while anyway. :P
