Well, was just a guess based on my experiences on several nightmare mode playthroughs with 2-3 mages in the party... just noticing what spells work, what spells don't, and trying to mentally translate that to a solo game.Lemonio wrote...
why do you say that you cannot solo with a mage?
though i am on normal, my mage has totally decimated everything
i just cast glyph of repulsion, then glyph of paralysis on top of that
so far, nothing has resisted it and i'm almost at the final battle, so i think resisting the glyph combo is impossible
then i just use inferno fireball and walking bomb and everyone dies
my mage definetly pwned the crap out of all the bosses
ambushes are not as easy, however you can just cast something like inferno and then forcefield, and voila, you win

force field also works
to be fair my mage would have probably lost to the high dragon, but my mage did do the overwhelming majority of the damage
problem with my mage was that he was too much AoE which doesn't work on high dragon, but he is still very killable
but either way, high dragon is a little extreme
everything else is not really a problem

Isn't that the point of soloing on nightmare?Lemonio wrote...

High dragon with mage on nightmare, solo?
I think it's doable. I have a few strategies in mind but I'd have to try them first. I've started a solo Mage game but it has to wait until I'm done with the Rogue. Proabably after New Year, since I'm going to be very busy soon and not have any time to play for a while.

The early levels were brutal, no doubt about it, but I kept pumping my dex up, eventually got master ranger, master stealth and AoS... at that point the game was on EZ mode even on nightmare.
Early on I made it a point to go around and collect the best gear I could (talking to Weylon right away to open up Haven for the bow there... then eventually sneaking past the dragon in the ruins for that bow), especially +dex gear.
Once I hit level 15 I started knocking off the main quest lines and the gold rolled in, and I was able to buy the various awesome items from the merchants, and obviously every tome I could use. Now I'm level 18 or 19 and my defense is 150, which makes me almost totally immune to almost every enemy.
Starfang longsword definetly helped matters, as did stealing Champion's Shield.
At this point I'll probably switch to Starfang/Thorn of the Rose for the extra rune slots. Grandmaster, Maste Dweomerr, Master Dweomer in the dagger (+26% spell resistance), and Grandmaster Hale, Grandmaster Paralyze, Grandmaster Paralyze in the longsword.
At this point, I'm not anticipating any problems for the rest of the game, with the possible exception of the fight in the palace district right before entering the Fort (with the dragon thrall).
I solo'd Flemeth no problem, and solo'd the high dragon (a little harder). Took a while, but archery was key for both fights, along with warmth potions.
Goodluck to the OP, and I hope this advice helps others trying the nightmare rogue solo challenge, it's been a blast.

I guess it could be done without ranger, but I have no idea how I would manage. The pets make boss fights possible, since I can stealth, lose aggro, and either start backstabbing, or run to range and keep shooting.

Where do you find 2 Grandmaster Paralyze Runes? I know one is in the magic store in Denerim, where's the other? And how did you get so much gold? I haven't spent gold on anything other than trap and poison recipes, didn't buy tomes yet, bought only 1 necklace from the camp merchants for 30% spell resist and 10% dodge, and I have less than 70 gold at level 14. My gear is still crap.
What I think is very interesting, is how soloing changes the game. I too have been doing exactly the same thing, trying to stack up spell resist and paralyze, rather than more damage from elemental runes.

I've managed without a pet so far and I did the whole thing solo, starting from level 1. I'm done with the Circle, Redcliffe, the Elves and most of Denerim, now heading to the the Urn and then Orzimmar. I think those are all very doable without a pet.

I read on the interwebs that a 2nd paralyze GM rune is available in the Wonders of Thedas after the landsmeet (don't know if it's true or not yet).
As for the gold, steal from EVERYONE ALWAYS, loot everything always, etc. Constantly ask for rewards. Buy the ring with +6 combat health regen ASAP and passively heal while stealthed to save money on potions. Plan out in advance what all your purchases will be.
Torin,
I just haven't had the talent points to do that. Rapid fire, master archer, AoS, master stealth, master lockpicking, master ranger, combat maneuvers, and dirty fighting took up all my points.

Interesting about the paralyze rune, I'll check it out. Means you have to buy the one in Denerim before Landsmeet if it's true. Where's the ring with combat regen? I stopped buying potions after the Tower of Ishal. I use what I find and the lesser health poultices I have Morrigan craft for me from all the Elfroot I find. I didn't buy any more recipes, so the lesser ones are all she can craft. I've had many a nightmare moment in boss fights where I was one potion short of victory, because of my stinginess.
Really, most of my gold has been spent on poison, grenade and trap recipes. Those cost a lot!

But you do know that the only thing Duelist gives you is the Attack/Defense from the Dueling stance, right? Well, when using a bow that is.
Duelist also gives +2 DEX and +1 damage.

I don't have the points to put anything into a 2nd specialization.
If I manage more points I'll either go up to keen defense (since it's passive), or get 2 ranks in DWing.

Edit; Also, you're wasting your money on buying recipes or poisons/traps/gernades, you don't need them... they just make things go a little faster. The money is more important as you aim for the various awesome items available (Felon's Coat

On my Arcane Mage, I have:
1) Reaper's Vestments (10%, mage only)
2) Imperial Weavers (10%, mage only)
3) The Spellward (10%, but you have that)
I don't think there are any others.

I have to disagree, they've been critical for me in certain fights. Remember, I don't have a pet, and I'm kind of obsessive about totally clearing areas, and kiling all the mobs I could stealth by. Yesterday, I spent an hour trying to figure out how to deal with the Shadow Werewolves in the ruins. When you're alone, they use overwhelm on you out of stealth, it's instant death. The only way I could kill them all was with an elaborate trap setup.
