I've seen this posted countless times on these forums but none of the fixes seem to work for me.

I installed the "Best of PC" version of KotOR a few years ago when my video card and drivers were for the most part current, though I'm really not very tech savvy so the actual specifics of my former card or my current one other than it's far above average.

It's come to my attention that people who installed Windows Vista or Windows 7 ran into start-up errors that take varying forms. When I start up my launcher everything is normal, I click Start and then one of two things happen. Either the program doesn't start at all, or the Lucasarts logo movie plays and then the program exits back to my desktop. The program still runs, but no amount of clicking or task managing will let me in.

I've found a few fixes and tried each several times but none of them seem to work. I'd rather not try my luck scouring Southern Californian Gamestop locations for an eight year old copy or resort to Steam and lose my saves or pay anything for a new program.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I doubt anyone touches the SW:KotOR forums anymore but I really miss this game and ever since I upgraded it won't work for me anymore.

There's a much easier fix than the linked article. Go to the swkotor.exe and right-click to bring up the properties. Go to the compatibility tab. You don't need to change the mode. Just click 'disable visual themes'. For me that stopped the crashed. You can try to disable the desktop composition and scaling options as well, but for me the visual themes was enough.
