How do I prevent my PC from being attacked?

My PC is a human sorcerer, and is obviously not suited for front-line tank behaviour.
However, whenever enemies are encountered, they go straight for him, ignoring the plate-armoured Khelgar. I end up running around in circles, being chased by the enemies who are in turn chased by my party warriors.
It's like a deadly version of Benny Hill!
Short of having a permanent invisibility cast on my PC, how do I avoid this happening?
I tried controlling Khelgar and sending him ahead of the group, but the enemies still seem to ignore him and make straight for the AC 12 sorcerer who has only a quarter of his hit points.

That's the tactics they should use to be effective. Destroy squishy but high damaging characters first. To prevent it, use spells like grease, sleep, slow, the tangling one (man I've been away too long if I can't remember this spell name), and others.

Also, approaching enemies with a scout will often get their attention on the scout giving your sorcerer some wiggling room if he comes up after.

Finally, space bar pausing makes tactical combat in this game much easier.

edit: just reread your post.  I guess Kelgar isn't far enough ahead when they notice your party.

If you run ahead with Khelgar and leave your sorcerer far enough behind, the enemy melee fighters won't switch to your sorcerer. The only persistent problem you should have is enemy archers, but if you focus on taking them out first it shouldn't be a problem. You can also cast either ghostly visage or protection from arrows to make archers fairly useless against your sorcerer. I'm guessing the reason you have issues is because you have the party following your selected character, in which case you should either switch to puppet mode or issue a stand your ground command to make sure everyone doesn't follow Khelgar into the melee when you charge the enemy.

Hey - don't knock the Benny Hill strategy! There's been many hard fights I've won by taunting the big, bad whatever with a fast moving character & leading them in a merry chase while my archer or spell caster stands in the middle blasting away at them :-)
Works a treat on lots of hard fights where you suddenly realise you'd bitten off a lot more than you can chew - although you need a lot of room!

Do you know that you can add the so-called voice commands to the taskbar? Type v to bring up the menu, then drag the commands to the taskbar of any party member. I use the attack, hold and follow commands. So, select a scout with these in his/her menu, hit the hold button and have him move ahead while the party remains in place. Upon sighting the enemy, they will fixate on him. Run back to the party, remembering to give them the attack command, switch to your sorcerer and blaze away. There are many variations on this theme, but I'll leave them for you to discover.

Cool beans!
Thanks for all the advice.
I'll try that taskbar trick from now on too.

Also - in case its not obvious from the post above, you can drag pretty much anything useful to your task bar - commands, equipment, spells, feats, relevant skills. And if you run out, add more task bars using the Options section.

It may take a little while to set them all up for your party if you have a lot of companions, but they'll remain for the entire adventure. I find the "Heal Me" command also handy.

If you are on the first levels, equip all your party with ranged weapons. Cheesiest tactic ever that worked in every single bioware game I've played from Baldur's Gate 1 to DAO -due to swarming enemies and weapon restrictions doesn't work in DA2- is to run in circles around my warriors while they sit quietly in the middle crossbowing the mother****er to death.

If they change direction to attack the warriors I stop with my mage and start throwing the kaboom stuff unless they are close to my tanks.

If they split...lol AI never splits XD but if somehow they manage just change one of the warriors to melee to drag the guy who is attacking your shooting squadron into assault -taunt and stuff like that- and the others to keep trying to put metal or wood bars on the guy who keeps harassing your mage.

Rinse and repeat

I've just noticed this behaviour myself (even with non-spell-casting PCs). It would seem to be an AI change implemented in one of the more recent patches, as I don't remember such behaviour prior to patch 1.22. It does seem unusual though - enemies ignoring the party members who actually damaged them, then running past other party members, making a bee-line for the PC.

obsidian utilized Tonyk's in 1.23, if I'm not mistaken.

* Edit:  I was mistaken

On my warlock, I often use a Benny Hill-Hentai Edition strategy. Chilling Tentacles. Then run around and through the tentacles. I expect YMMV, as I am not on the hardest difficulty setting, so spells don't hurt my own team. Even as a Blaster-Type lock who completely dumped Charisma, I find it surprisingly effective for Auto-Damage.
