As others mentioned, Deus Ex 2 is closest I can think of although I was a little disapointed in the game play. It also doesn't really have the activated abilities of ME.
Dead Space 2 might be worth a shot as well, no conversation choices and no cover system. It plays considerably better as a shooter than DE2 though and does have a story. Fururistic survival horror genre.
SWTOR has story, conversations, companions and abilities, it isn't a shooter at all though.

It seems like Deus Ex: Human Revolution is what you might be looking for. RPG, science fiction and it's set in a very expanded universe. Also, love interests.
Love interests? there's only the one, unless there are hidden things or something in that story dlc I don't know of yet.
I can't recommend the Deus Ex series enough. It has some of the best art direction in Human Revolution of any production I've ever seen, and not just games.

They captured a Blade Runner like Cyberpunk world beautifully.

This, a thousand times over, althought the story and characters are pretty much guaranteed to not be on the same level.

2080 AD Tokyo, Japan. The Amada Corporation break Geneva Code, Clause 21 by creating humanoid robots that believe themselves to be human. These so-called Hollow Children have infiltrated the human population, blurring the lines between man and machine. Dan Marshall and the Rust Crew are tasked to find Amada at all costs. Will the team’s human bond be their greatest strength or will they fall to the machines?

None of these appear in the game, which looks rather differentsome of the best art
[snip]
Let's not go there - overrated, and confused "mature concepts" with "lots of sex". In fact the only game in the series I didn't finish. The Witcher 2
Let's not go there either; you might just as well suggest the upcoming C&C Generals - you'll enjoy SWTOR if and only if you like MMORPGs. If you want more stuff like ME, this is not the game for youSWTOR

It's in the same vein at KOTOR 1 and 2 though...

Concept art is about capturing the central theme and feel of it. Faridah appears exactly the same and so does her 800-BEE in the game. The drawing of Adam is supposed to depict his time inbetween his recovery and the actual beginning of the full campaign. The concept of detroit is jus that, the concpet of how they would desing Detroit.
Did you play the game, becuase all of these are actual concept art from the game.
Also, as someone else mentioned, Binary Domain, I feel like it can easily be the sleeper hit of 2012, hopefully coming out a week before ME3 helps with promoting it because this game looks big and amazing.
There's also Adrift which is supposed to come out at some point this year

Game Devs should make more Cyber Punk Games!

Has a bunch of areas to improve, but I like the setting in the spionage world, and I find very entretaining the focus on stealth.
I also find entretaining the minigames, at beging I found extremly annoying the hacking minigame, but once I got it.... (still I believe it's a poorly deseigned minigame).
THE WITCHER 2 (even The Witcher 1 even it may look dated and clumsy nowadays) it's in another level, but quite different from ME

You sure you played Deus Ex: HR? That art definitely translated into the game. One is part of a cutscene and another is one of the hub worlds. The pilot and ship look that way in game too.

Im going to have to go with Deus Ex. The current one Deus Ex:HR is one of my favorite games. What make Deus Ex different from other games it that it seems to have some sort of underlining philosophy. Which makes it interesting. Mass Effect and Deus Ex and ME are the only games I know of that try to replicate life and politics.
DE:HR is about the Illuminate.

Shhh!
Yes, there is a pretty cheap layer to the story about Illuminati, but as far as the themes go in general, the game is one of my favorites. It is just fantastic at considering so many issues and the perspectives of the choices in a rather dark version of the future. Tech does advance, but life doesn't get better. Cities are darker and dirtier. It is a somewhat frightening vision as it is so possible. In just 17 years, we may indeed see our cities and quality of life go the direction it goes in Deus Ex. Very interesting to think about why it went there when you are playing.
The ending is fantastically politcally and ethically tearing.

If you like Mass Effect, i can't really help ya, although i would give Dragon Age "Origins" a try.
If you like Mass Effect 2 more, then you might give the Gears Of War series a try.

I just meant like a subliminal "underlining philosophy" when i said Bilderber... I mean Illuminate. Not the story as a whole.
I love the story and atmosphere of the game, but i hate to say it... i couldn't stand the combat system for some reason. I'll have to give it another playthrough sometime soon.

Definitely was more of a game for patient or stealthy players who wanted tactical eliminations. You could do combat, but the game was really not tailored as well for a combat pace. Glad you liked it too.

I had been playing to much Splinter Cell Conviction (yes, there are people who actually like that game) the Week before i played Deus Ex the first time, and it just felt a bit stiff compared to other Stealth games. Still enjoyable though.

Yeah it is a difficult one.KotorEffect3 wrote...
Mass Effect is pretty unique when all is said and done. I mean yes you will find elements and bits and pieces that are similar in other series but you won't find anything that is like Mass Effect as a whole. Basicaly Mass Effect is what a Sci-Fi RPG should be. The closest thing I can think to it is KOTOR but the OP wanted something more recent and really you can almost see Mass Effect as KOTOR's offspring in a sense because working on KOTOR is kind of what inspired Bioware to make Mass Effect.
DXHR is comparable with the style and storytelling. It's a shame it's so depressing, but that's cyberpunk for you...
Unfortunately I can't think of anything that captures a similar (romantic) space opera theme. Well, ME1 at least was more romantic space opera, now it's more space action, but that's something for another discussion.
SWTOR doesn't count because MMO - I've seen enough videos to know I don't want to spend my time on it.
Hmm, imagine KotOR 3 done in the cinematic style of mass effect... ...yeah I'd better stop right there - don't want to delude myself any further.
Hey that looks pretty good!CannonLars wrote...
