think to it is KOTOR but the OP wanted something more recent and really you can almost see Mass Effect as KOTOR's offspring in a sense because working on KOTOR is kind of what inspired Bioware to make Mass Effect.

Yeah it is a difficult one.

I totally forgot! Prey 2 is in a similar line as Mass Effect.

Hey that looks pretty good! :o Seems quite different from Prey 1.

Yep. It has a much cooler setting and approach. Fantastic futuristic bounty hunter game. It has several story links to Prey 1, but the main character and focus is indeed different.

Did...and don't like it. Stealth action games are not for me.

Deus Ex without a doubt.

Alpha protocol is a buggy mess but does share some similarities even though ME wins in every category easily.

Fallout 3 is a close one too.

Playing Assassins Creed (starting with 2) would be worthwhile if you like wordy storylines. There is a lot of tedious jumping and acrobatics though (those quests through the churches).

Why has no one mentioned the similarities are due to the writing teams? Its the same teamfrom Baldur's Gate.

Have to agree with DX:HR - great game.(if you like, also check out the original DX)
Have to agree with Alpha Protocol - RPG- shooter mix with ok gameplay but amazing story
Have to agree with Dead Space (2) - Not really RPG and lot's of horror elements but the scifi wibe goes into the same direction, was good for me when I needed a mass effect fix
Well, the KotOR games are classics to be sure but be aware that you don't have a real time combat system.

Also, look into the last two red faction games (I only played gurillia) - less interesting story but an open scifi world and TPS mechanics and vehicles on (terraformed) mars

If you are looking for a scifi shooter with a bit of story, how about Quake 4? (it's not really similar to ME at all and thus might be a bit of a stretch though)

One upcoming title, I keep my eye on is Spec Ops: The line, takes place in a very near future (almost present) but it's another cover TPS and might have a good story.

That's all I can come up with from the top of my head.

I think gameplay was its biggest weakness, and I blame the engine there. I am sure the next one (which is also pretty likely to happen due to DE:HR's good reception) will have more fluid gameplay and way better graphics than the dated look of HR.

Absolutely one of the better written games in the last several years, especially in themes and tone. I agree, everyone should give it a shot.

More ammo would have opened up the gameplay to be more combat oriented but alas...
Flinging dead bodies through the air was great fun though, and who can resist playing as Adam Jensen.<3

Alpha Protocol? Although it plays like **** it has the similar dialogue system.

No, not really similar. The AP system is deeper, maturer and much harder than Mass Effect, which could explain why a lot of people prefer Mass Effect. It's just harder to get into AP. Dialogues give you little time to choose your response (pro tip: READ the dossiers, buy information on the characters you're meeting before you meet them) so you really need to study the situation and plan ahead. Your interactions are tracked for each individual you meet on a scale of how much they like you, and this has a direct affect on how people treat you, what missions you have available, the end game.  And it plays about as well as ME1.

It'll be amazing if done properly.

For those that are curious --because everyone asks eventually-- the song is Storm by Bjork.

I personally love Alpha Protocol, at least from what I've seen of it. I actually have the game and have started 3 different playthroughs, with bugs causing me to start over. What I've seen amounts to a very good and original game, and probably my favorite boss fight of all time (Konstantin Brayko).

I think I'm going to see if I can get it to work.

Alpha protocol is way better than ME(and most games) in decisions actually have an effect on how the story plays out...Play a mission stealthy and an NPC likes that you are a proffesional--go in guns-a-blazing and and the same NPC dislikes you because you are a loose cannon--it was brilliant. Don't get me wrong ME has a much deeper universe and story, but AP was great as an RPG--not so good as a shooter, but that wasn't what I was looking for in either AP or ME1 and loved them both. ME2 gave me exactly what I didn't want in combat from a ME game: ammo and long tedious fights.

KOTOR was the most epic thing to come out of Bioware (better than Mass Effect imo)... Bought the book on Revan, looking pretty good.

Play the original Deus Ex, Ray Muzyka himself said that it was an influence on BioWare games, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution is awesome.

Also Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and Knights of the Old Republic is worth a shot, though I still can't get used to the shooting/action system on the PC.

I assume you mean 'like ME' in the sense that they're an action-RPG with a, semi defined protaganist and/or a dialogue wheel system of sorts.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Jade Empire
Alpha Protocol
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Witcher (1/2)
Rise of the Argonauts

Didn't play Rage (yet) but yeah, DX:HR is a must.

Also, I recently stumbled over this trailer:

Don't really know anything about this game and didn't investigate since it says it won't come for PC but I got a bit of an ME vibe there. Maybe it's just another crappy Sega game but maybe also worth checking out for console people.

I was going to say KotOR, but you wanted a new game. It is similar to ME in many ways (but you can be more extreme in the renegade-direction if you want to be a sith) and it has probably the best plot twist of all time.
