As much as I love Fallout 3 and New Vegas pretty much as much as Mass Effect they aren't really anything like Mass Effect.

I totally agree with whoever said Binary Domain...

xbox360.ign.com/articles/121/1214747p1.html - Preview.

It's not an action/rpg just a pure tactical third person shooter from Sega (Japan) the same people behind the Yakuza series surprisingly... I just checked out the trailer and besides looking pretty pre-rendery it totally looks cinematically similar to Deus Ex in theme and it's got the blockbuster feels of ME2. Let's just hope it's not only 8 hours long.

Interesting enough some discriptions i've read hint at some light rpg elements that sound vaguely like the loyalty system in ME2. It's even got crappy cover art just like Mass Effect!

Edit: Just checked out some Gameplay demos and I think it looks pretty impressive.... the environments look similar to Deus Ex but with Gears gameplay. looks overall pretty gears-y akin to Mass Effect but even more tactical and has multiplayer. I'd definately say Deus Ex meets Gears with some Mass Effect thrown in there.

I'm glad I saw this thread. I think I'm definately going to keep an eye on this game over the next month and I would adise anybody who loves games like Mass Effect and Deus Ex to do the same... we need more killer sci-fi games.

Binary Domain has caught my eye but I tend to dislike Japanese games (Dark Souls not included, love that game). The loyalty system sounds very cool though and the gameplay looks fun.

I'm very curious of it too, but I'm cautious for the same reasons.

Yeah but you can decide how the story progresses and how it ends, do you try to make peace or try to kill everyone, and you have to make good or evil choices, evil is usually evil in this game. That is a lot like Mass effec. You can be nice or an ass like in mass effect. They're quite similiar with the story/character mechanics, fallout feels like iit has a larger scale story but not as personal as Mass effect.

Shooting, visual and exploration very different kind of feel. Image IPB

You can decide how Mass Effect progresses and have Bioware pull you back on their canonical path an hour later. In that sense New Vegas and Mass Effect have nothing in common. If it were a Vioware game you'd be forced to work with the Brotherhood even though you're opposed to them and want to be NCR.

Oh my god...check out this video on "consequences"... Going back to Binary Domain for a second it really is what I think we would call [in the west] an action/rpg .... when you dig a little deeper it starts to look a whole lot more like ME2.

This might be the most Mass Effect like series yet if you disregard the absense of aliens and subsitute them with androids. Mass Effect's Evil Japanese twin brother. I can't wait for February and March now.

The Witcher 2

Let's not go there - overrated, and confused "mature concepts" with "lots of sex". In fact the only game in the series I didn't finish

You didn't even play the game if you think there's "lots of sex."  If you actually did, I guess you skipped out on the entire story, the political and class themes, morally grey choices that actually affect the narrative and character developments.  Every rpg fan with a decent PC should play it as TW2 is right there with Dark Souls, the best rpg of 2011.

I'll also recommend Deus Ex: HR.  It's a really great but flawed game.  A lot of the city hubs are lifeless, a severe lack of sidequests and the boss battles are completely broken awful disasters.  As mentioned before, the art direction is pretty great and some of the conversations are superb (ie talking to a mini-boss or quests devoted purely to dialogue).

It's a shame there aren't more rpgs set in the future / space.  The creative possibilities are wide open, especially compared to a fantasy based rpg.

Edit:  Oh buddy, definitely SKIP Rise of the Argonauts.  That game is really, really poor.  You're better off playing Alpha Protocol, which has "don't mind it but it's certainly not great / completely hate it" combat, for the vastly superior to Mass Effect dialogue system.

definately try deus ex HR it is one of my all time favourite games.

p.s nobody has mentioned RAGE at all.
i toght that was fantastic.
deus ex first choice, RAGE second choice

I just started playing RAGE. Setting wise, it's very much like Borderlands but in HD (think Mad Max post apocalyptic desert). Might be the best desert enviornmental art I've ever seen.
So far it is a bit slow, but <3John Goodman's<3 in it and the guns feel like GUNS.

Vanquish is a sort of HALO/Mass Effect thing but with very HALO esque gameplay on acid techno.  Might be worth playing but I haven't gotten to far into it yet.

Vanquish is amazing. RAGE was my #1 let down of 2011. Ending sucks so hard.

Yes. Thankfully there is Typhoon ammo, or I would have quit playing.

Indeed.  Add some combat mp, flesh out the pseudo-open world a bit more, insert a few gigantic mutants for a true end game and it would have been so much better.  Best shooting mechanics in a very long time...makes COD and Battlefield 3 look like Baby's 1st Shooter.

I agree with yahtzee on it personally. If it had Person on person MP and not Car on car I probably would of kept it instead of trading it toward ME3 (Sp really has no replay IMO and I'd rather play Twisted metal or vigilante 8 if I wanted car combat). The boss battles sucked too IMO. http://www.escapistm...ation/4824-Rage

I hope we get a sequel to it because the ideas are there and it blows the hell out of Borderlands' lifeless shooting and drab "rpg elements." It seemed like they were playing it safe for some reason when they really should have gone 100% creative with Rage. I haven't had that much fun in a shooter with the different enemies and their animations in a really long time.

At the very least, I hope Bethesda uses id's shooting mechanics for Fallout 4 and they actually use a new engine. I love Skyrim but it's definitely my last game ever if Bethesda keeps using that engine.

Getting off-topic here so..... :)

I didn't have a problem with the battles, other than I'd probably rather have just watched them in a prerendered cutscene. The longest one I dealt with took me a minute and a half. I think I was on the "Tell Me A Story" difficulty, tho.

It seems like Deus Ex: Human Revolution is what you might be looking for. RPG, science fiction and it's set in a very expanded universe. Also, love interests.

Love interests? there's only the one, unless there are hidden things or something in that story dlc I don't know of yet.

I can't recommend the Deus Ex series enough. It has some of the best art direction in Human Revolution of any production I've ever seen, and not just games.

They captured a Blade Runner like Cyberpunk world beautifully.

Well, there's the whole Megan thing. I'm not saying it's as developed as in ME, but still - the game is based upon the characters feelings for someone else. There's also "flygirl", although that's only hinted.

Oh and by the way: If you haven't played 'The Missing Link' - get on it! It's awesome.

^ Absolutely

Can't even stress how worthwhile the game is. I spent a ridiculous amount of time on it because there is just so much to see in the hub cities.

Deus Ex. Not very similar but still a great game.

Deus Ex Human Revolution comes closer to the Mass Effect style than anything else in my opinion.

Rise of Argonaut is the worst RPG I have played so far!!!
