Season Pass?

Last night I made a suggestion which Stanley Woo said he liked it and that I should attempt to discuss it further. Well, here I go.

The Season Pass:

Why?

The type of gamer who plays RPGs is a somewhat different breed than the standard gamer. Those who play RPGs seem to be more prone towards "completionist" tendencies, wherein they want to own and unlock everything available to them. This type of gamer is alienated by the current method of DLC distribution, which offers limited and unwieldy solutions to their wants.

Okay, so what is a Season Pass?

The Season Pass is a concept popularized by many modern games such as the latest iterations of the Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Uncharted series. Purchasing a Season Pass (usually for $20-30) entitles the owner to current and upcoming DLC.

What I am proposing is that the Season Pass include ALL DLC... everything from extra missions to weapon packs to multiplayer character skins.

Wouldn't that cause a problem for companies like Gamestop who negotiated "exclusive" DLC offers?

It depends. It could be that the DLC they negotiated for is only a timed exclusive, in which case an obvious workaround is to just make it available to the owners of the Season Pass when that exclusive period ends. If there is currently no expiration date of the exclusivity Bioware may need to negotate adjustments to the contract.

Why might Bioware be interested?

Lots of reasons.

1.) It remedies a situation that alienates a significant portion of their customer base.

2.) It will likely help to increase total DLC sales.

3.) There is a time value of money. If Bioware can get fifty thousand gamers to prepay $30 for their DLC, that's $1.5 million that Bioware will have available immediately. They can invest that and begin to receive a return on it much more quickly than investing smaller sums of money each time new DLC is released.

What problems do you see this posing for Bioware?

Aside from the forementioned potential contractual difficulties, Bioware would be under obligation to produce enough DLC to make gamers feel as though the money was well spent or else risk losing future Season Pass subscribers for subsequent games. It also creates some degree of difficulty in differentiating the standard edition from the Collector's Edition.

What do you suggest Bioware does about the Collector's Edition?

I preordered my Collector's Edition months ago... but I wouldn't have a problem with making the DLC a timed exclusive, as I suggested for the Gamestop preorders.

Is there enough time to do this?

I know it would be a pain in the butt for Bioware to try to cobble something like this together in the six weeks before release, but truthfully, it only needs to be done before the first big DLC pack is released.

What does everybody think? Is this something you'd be interested in?

I've bought all the DLC for both Mass Effect games, the only stuff I haven't been able to get is the Terminus Weapon and Amour which of course was a GameStop exclusive.

So yes I would be interested in a season pass that would leet me get all of it for one price.

What do you think a subscription to Call of Duty Elite is?

Its not required.

Call of duty Elite simply gets you DLC a bit earlier, it has no exclusitivity to it whatsoever.

I like the idea. I purchased the season passes for LA Noire and Gears 3, and it's a great idea. Speficially if your the kind of person, as the OP suggests, who is into 100% completion, or who holds onto their games. Season Passes FTW!!

Call of Duty Elite is prepaying for DLC... which is what a season pass is. Exclusivity has nothing to do with it.

Of course, this argument has nothing to do with Mass Effect, so let's drop it.

A season pass is just a key to unlocking the door to multiplayer permantely or to some content in-game.

Practically every game has this.

It's an anti-second-hand purchase protection device.

It's smart, because it also benefits towards sales for people who aren't prone to 100% completion as well.

It's similar to the idea that buying in bulk is cheaper per item than buying individually, but, by marketing it as such people who might have paid for 1 or 2 pieces individually (but at a lower cost than the season pass) may instead opt for the pass for convenience sake and value creating a higher profit per customer.

Bonus points if you can buy the pass alongside the retail and digital versions at time of purchase rather than have to go through a second purchase via your platform.

That's an Online Pass.

A Season Pass is where you pay ahead of time (usually for a significant discount) for certain DLC. When the DLC is released, you download it at no extra cost in-game, since you already purchased it.

I could see myself buying the Season Pass, depends on the discount.

I like the sound of it. I purchased no Season Passes yet from any titles. Mass Effect 3, I will. I do need money for the others too. It's a great ideas to me, all DLC in one price.

They also don't have to pay for the DLC because they are paying a subscription fee.  It's not labeled as a season pass, but it's still the same concept.

Season passes does not mean exclusive content for those that bought it.  It's a tool to offer chunks of DLC at a discounted price before releasing details of all the DLC before hand.

If Bioware were to offer a season pass, I'd likely buy it.  Otherwise, they'll be lucky if I buy any of their DLC.  Especially since this is the last game in Shepard's story.  I only bought Kasumi and Lair of The Shadow Broker because we knew there would be a ME3 and playing them gave me something to look forward to in the future.

But DLC for a game that's not going to get a continuation, I'd need a different reason to buy any proposed content.

As Xerxes pointed out, you're thinking of an Online Pass. Not a Season Pass. They are two different concepts.

I have to throw my support fully behind this. As long as it unlocks all the content at some point in the future I will absolutely pay 20-30 bucks ahead of time. This sounds like a great idea from a money making standpoint AND a good will standpoint.

I like this idea a lot. I don't want to pay time and time again for multiple DLCs when I can just pay for all of them in one go. If BW decides to release this I'm definitely buying it.

BTW you should make a pole for this and see how many people would buy it.

Yes I definetly support this because I STILL DON'T HAVE FREAKING TERMINUS AMOUR FOR ME2, which is now essentially ps3 exclusive.

Good idea, currently it's near impossible to obtain everything DLC, without buying multiple copies, which is absurd.
