The Season Pass:
Why?
The type of gamer who plays RPGs is a somewhat different breed than the standard gamer. Those who play RPGs seem to be more prone towards "completionist" tendencies, wherein they want to own and unlock everything available to them. This type of gamer is alienated by the current method of DLC distribution, which offers limited and unwieldy solutions to their wants.
Okay, so what is a Season Pass?
The Season Pass is a concept popularized by many modern games such as the latest iterations of the Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Uncharted series. Purchasing a Season Pass (usually for $20-30) entitles the owner to current and upcoming DLC.
What I am proposing is that the Season Pass include ALL DLC... everything from extra missions to weapon packs to multiplayer character skins.
Wouldn't that cause a problem for companies like Gamestop who negotiated "exclusive" DLC offers?
It depends. It could be that the DLC they negotiated for is only a timed exclusive, in which case an obvious workaround is to just make it available to the owners of the Season Pass when that exclusive period ends. If there is currently no expiration date of the exclusivity Bioware may need to negotate adjustments to the contract.
Why might Bioware be interested?
Lots of reasons.
1.) It remedies a situation that alienates a significant portion of their customer base.
2.) It will likely help to increase total DLC sales.
3.) There is a time value of money. If Bioware can get fifty thousand gamers to prepay $30 for their DLC, that's $1.5 million that Bioware will have available immediately. They can invest that and begin to receive a return on it much more quickly than investing smaller sums of money each time new DLC is released.
What problems do you see this posing for Bioware?
Aside from the forementioned potential contractual difficulties, Bioware would be under obligation to produce enough DLC to make gamers feel as though the money was well spent or else risk losing future Season Pass subscribers for subsequent games. It also creates some degree of difficulty in differentiating the standard edition from the Collector's Edition.
What do you suggest Bioware does about the Collector's Edition?
I preordered my Collector's Edition months ago... but I wouldn't have a problem with making the DLC a timed exclusive, as I suggested for the Gamestop preorders.
Is there enough time to do this?
I know it would be a pain in the butt for Bioware to try to cobble something like this together in the six weeks before release, but truthfully, it only needs to be done before the first big DLC pack is released.
What does everybody think? Is this something you'd be interested in?
