I've tried a number of times over the past 6 months or so to make Mass Effect work on my computer, through Steam, but to no avail. This week I asked a friend of mine to give me a hand, and we tried as many fixes as we could find online, and we still can't get it to go past the loading screen. The computer is up-to-date hardware and software-wise, we've tried running it as administrator, running it in different compatability modes, tried to get the most recent DLC and a whole bunch of other things, and nothing seems to work.

I think I'm going to delete it in the next couple days if I can't figure anything else out. Any out-of-the-box ideas that I might not have tried yet?

Silliest thing would be have you tried updating the game manually?//

Other than that specs of your machine(hardware and drivers) and the exact nature of the error.

I was going to try to update manually, or try to get the Bring Down the Sky DLC somehow and update that, but it didn't seem to be available anymore when I checked.

My machine is the Alienware M11X and I've updated most of the drivers since I got it to their more recent updates (maybe that was a mistake, and the game won't work with the recent drivers - I may attempt to roll back to previous versions of the drivers and see if that helps any)

Annoyingly, I can't find out what the exact nature of the error is, when I get to the loading screen, the whole screen just turns black, as if the game is about to begin, and then it just brings me back to the desktop as if I had never tried to open the game.

Does that machine have an "Optimus" graphics chip in it? Seems like everyone trying to use one of those is ending up having the onboard Intel video over-riding the better graphics, and if there's a way around it, I haven't seen anyone say so.

^^  Sticky at top of Forum with links to update and BDtS and how to get.

As far as the nature of the crash, you can try if it is a Win7 machine clicking start, then search and type "reliability" and choose the reliability manager which SHOULD give a listing of all errors and crashes plus what it thinks is the cause/reason.  Sometimes it is right, sometimes it isn't, and many people don't even know it is there.
