Not sure if I like the idea of all characters being potential romances for either gender. I know that Kaidan was intended to be bisexual in ME1, and while I was looking forward to there being a male romance option in the third game, I just cannot accept Kaidan as a legitimate partner for male Shepard. What's done is done, essentially. Bioware instead placed him as a "straight" character in ME1 and because I romanced him with my first Femshep, Devi, it's real hard for me to see him batting for the other side too. I wonder if some others feel the same way?
(This has absolutely nothing to do with opposing same sex romance for femshep or maleshep.)
I'm kind of on the fence on this matter, really - it's a good thing BroShep () has more than one male option, but at the same time it's kind of odd that Kaidan wasn't available before.
I am also on fence.
I find 'bi' characters in these games are...well, they're not really bi, are they? In games where you romance Fenris with MHawke, Fenris strikes me as gay, not bi. But if you don't romance him, he starts a fling with izzy. izzy clearly IS bi, but if you play MHawke with Merrill, she's straight. Anders gives you that line about Karl being lovers only if you play MHAwke. As FHawke, I totally thought he was straight, given awakening dialog. it's not even like they could swing both ways - it's like in some people's games, they ARE straight, are bi, are gay. if kaidan was into rahna and now MShep, then he's bi? or was gay all along?
i'm not sure if i'm making sense. my thought: there's a whole lot of headcanon going on. on the one hand, i would love it if they had characters that were gay, bi, and straight and that's just the way they were - that it was part of their characterization and consistent that way. but it doesn't bother me if it shifts for games. i think the weirdness for me is that kaidan and ash were both meant to be bi in me1, then they weren't, then we get that blip about them being canonically straight 'cause shep is, then they change that for kaidan alone. BIZarre. a lot of bizarre goin' on with the romances, i gotta say.
Infinite parallel universe theory. It works wonders for the head cannon. The main protagonist’s identity is not a constant. He or she can be gay or straight, badass or diplomat, blonde, brunette or redhead, etc, etc, etc. Why not the same for the NPCs? In an m/m romance playthrough Kaidan is bi and may have been holding in feeling. In an f/m romance playthrough he is straight and always has been.
