Ok, I removed all most of the cheekiness and made this post just a wee bit more... stable. More happy and cheeky tomorrow, I hope.

So, I promised some pics of Maria.

Maria Shepard, Colonist, War Hero, Infiltrator. Full Paragon. Yes, little miss goody two-shoes likes headshots. Go figure. :P

Posted Image

My favorite shot from ME1 and what I used to make my forum avatar. I just love that angle. It doesn't appear anywhere else in the game.

Posted Image

Maria in ME2. Yes, I know Kestrel armor isn't the best for an Infiltrator, but she just looks so good in it!

Posted Image

Meeting Joker again in ME2. I love that half-smile/half smirk she has going on.

Posted Image

Maria Shepard doesn't like smoke in her face.

Posted Image

This was my wallpaper for about two years. This right here is the sole reason that she romanced Garrus. Just look at the way she's looking at him. I actually went back and replayed her in ME1 so she wouldn't have an LI, then imported her into ME2. I am that crazy.

If you guys want to see more, let me know.

A few pages back, SaturnRing asked about how we play our Sheps. For me, my canon Maria more or less acts how I would in that situation, since I generally try to be a nice person. For alts, though, I think of them as their own person. Kendra is the exact opposite of me. But, she is just so much fun to play. And it's very easy. I just think "what would I do in this situation?" and then Kendra does the opposite. :o

I do have to say this. Of all the things that Bioware stated before release, the one thing they were dead on accurate about was how much more human Shepard would be. Every decision Kendra made, I could see it weighing on her more and more. And because she was Renegade, everytime someone asked her about it, she would bottle it up and just say "I'm fine. It's nothing." because that's what the Renegade option did. I started to feel real sympathy for her. But, I committed to the Renegade path for her all the way back in ME1 and I wanted to see it through. But, dang, did she have it rough.
NanNoir, your Shep looks great. More please. :)

I agree with you. It was one of the few things they did right.

And thank you!

@Aislinn: Please don't go.

I agree with the "FemShep is cool because she's a person" view pretty much.

Nice shots btw, but this one in particular helped make sense of why there seemed to be some significance to Shepard glancing at the floor of the Illusive Man's base. I thought the circular design was odd.....and it's strange how closey the Illusive Man's seating area closely resembles the layout of the Citadel seen at the end.

But I'm kind of never here anymore.  Blame my classes and my general uselessness in the wake of the endings.  I'll post a few pictures, just to show I'm not dead.

I'm a guy.  Pretty much the only reason I picked up Mass Effect in the first place was because I realized I could make a female Shepard.  I love strong female protagonists not just because capability == sexy, but because having a female protagonist makes for a far more interesting (and less often retread) story than anything with a male protagonist.  I long for the day when there are SO MANY female protagonists in film, books, TV, and video games that it's no longer a deciding factor in whether the story is truly compelling to me.

Re: femShep and You

Jessica Shepard is a totally separate persona from me by this point. After multiple playthroughs with her, though, I find it hard to see the universe of Mass Effect any longer except through her eyes. It seems to make the experience for me on the opposite side of the keyboard even more intense. For example, due to Jessica's past, Harkin's piggish comments inspired not just digust, but anger, and her Renegade responses didn't require a thought. And Priority: Thessia was doubly devestating because Jessica idealizes the asari and always dreamed of seeing their homeworld, but when she finally does it's in flames with asari being slaughtered eveywhere. There are times Jessica has surprised me with her course of action (shooting the Reds patsy as soon as he threatened her) or told me something about herself I didn't know on my own. I'm more invested in the universe because Jessica lives there, and I care about Jessica because she's her own person.

Eh... that doesn't make much sense. Shutting up now.

I'm a guy as well...been chatting here in the femshep threads since I guess consistently anyways...about January or Feb...not sure which really...before that I lurked the thread pretty regularly once I started playing ME on the pc, which was in September. I joined femshep.com just after demo release...so I could multi-player with alot of the regs here. Most I guess know me pretty well from either chat or my posting of my femsheps...whom I haven't even shown all off because well...I wasn't posting in the original thread at first. I also come froma  family of STRONG women...we are jamaican's by blood and most of my family moved here before I was born( in 1980).So, yeah I too love a strong female protagonist even if my tendancy is to play the male first because of my gender. I tend to like to play the females more because I fidn I can roleplay them a TON better..whereas the males I feel like I play them to my own personality. Anyways, let me stop rambling there...LOL.

Another of my current femshep Alicia...whom as I said before is gonna have complete personality switch from Paragade to Renegon...

Re:Femshep & me

At first Kallen was just a face I made in the CC with a background I chose from teh available options and I wanted to make her mean so I chose Torfan. as I played her, I empathized. sh was a character in my control, whom I had to shape into her own...but somehow she became me. I'ma dude, so add me to the dude count in the femshep thread, but Kallen Shepard somehow became part of Adam Legend and that's how She became the older sibling to my original SI dudeshep Adam Shepard. They're practically inseparable and they're decisions and loyalties are somehwat the same. It's funny though, as adam I played through the game just like any other game. there were emotional moment sure and even in teh worst of the situations He ws me and we were raging through with out biotic power. When it came time to play our "sister" it was mostly the same, but during that trip through no mans land in london, my stomach was in knots. I knew everything that was going to happen evne planned her ending choice and yet....I worried for her. I worried when Brutes charged, when banshee's shrieked, when her shots would miss their target, when squadmates would go down, I worried for her. as if I wasn't the one pushing the buttons on the controller and moving the thumb sticks. Iw as nervous until saw the camera pan to her body and she inhaled. I still can't explain it, but I was worried for Kallen.

Another guy here, and probably pretty far outside what's considered BioWare's core demographic, too.

I love science fiction, and, having heard that the Mass Effect universe represented unusually good SF for a game, played ME and ME2 with default Sheploo. They were... OK. Then saw an article -- no more specific memory than that -- that recommended playing a female Shepard for the superior voice acting.

I took the advice. When I went back through with a custom FemShep, I couldn't believe how much better the experience was. Wasn't just Jennifer Hale's VA, though. I found I was thinking more about each decision and about the character's personality. I THINK that's because I was forced out of the assumptions that came along with gaming's "badass male soldier" stereotype. Suddenly I had a three-dimensional character, and immersion in the story became possible for me.

Whether this has as much to do with gender as it does with being able to develop a character without the cognitive dissonance that comes with having to fight cliche and stereotype at every decision point, I really don't know. I DO know, though, that science fiction has a long history of strong female lead characters. I've gone on at length about this before, and blogged about it a while back, so I'll stop here.

I'm a guy and I play femShep simply because I enjoy the character more. As Syrdoth said - the whole "big man saving the day" pitch gets old, both because I've aged but also because it's been done so many times before. And with the way Mass Effect works, the protagonist is already so defined that I don't really consider it an avatar of me. Sure I get to play director with Shepard's morality, but the character's not me, or a virtual representation of me, by power of the predefined background, the voiceover ect.
So when I got to that fact it was basically a case of me finding the version of the character I found the most interesting and unique. That was femShep. Too few female heroes are around today, I'm happy I got one who stood out.

Also the word "pointless". I really wish it had been Al-Jilani or Emily Wong, I just...can't stand Allers. She gets left on the Citadel every time.

I don't even hate her, she's just useless. Pointless. Waste of resources that could have gone elsewhere. Like, instead of spending that time scanning and making a lumpy Chobot model, make a real face for Tali or hair for Shepard or whatever. Give her a leather jacket and not Allers' recoloured dress. /salty 4ever

I would've preferred Emily Wong. It'd be a great way to recycle and establish more familiarity with a classic character. Oh well... I don't mind Allers but it just feels like such a good opportunity wasted.

I think there's quite a few, actually. You'll be surprised!

I'm one of them.

I played FemShep at first for the eyecandy aspect.  (Guilty as charged!)  Then after that I did a play through with Sheploo, I found him to be a flatter interpretation of the character.  So now, my preferance is for FemShep, just because how the character was performed in the first game was much better.

Oh, and with the marketing for the second, she felt more like my creation.

Wanting some eye candy is not a  problem   but it does became a problem when that is the only reason.  I.E ..  Allers  Whats worst about Allers is that Chobot  herself is actually cute... that character model though  oh god . .

I'm a guy aswell so *raises hand*

I've been playing games since i was like 3 so i've seen a horrible amount of uninteresting protagonists and the overwhelming majority of them have been male. I stumbled upon FemShep through Youtube a snowy day in December 2010. I guess it was the thought of playing a strong character that in this case happened to be female and voiced by the always so awesome Jennifer Hale. Pointing on the biggest reason why i prefer FemShep isn't possible to describe for people that don't play as her.
It's FemShep and that says more than a thousand words to me. She's special and she's pretty damn awesome at kicking ass and being overall badass <3

Just my two cents on this

See that's the thing. The character model is extremely pandering, and the outfit even moreso. Also - zombie face. I know people complained about Miranda's ME2 model but the Allers one is waaaay worse. And hate to say it, but Chobot's not much of a voice-actress, since it's not what she does and it comes across in-game. To me it feels like the whole purpose of the character is IGN fanservice. Great if you're into that, but not so much if you're not.

As for the outfit - I wish they'd just kept the one from Kasumi's loyalty mission in ME2 in the game - that one had a bit of class.

LOL -  they need to try harder... I talked to her all of but  once though the whole game before I  was completely off put...Honesly it was waste of time...  she not even worth the  War assets  - I would much prefered that do  something with Tali's face and make actually   3D model or added another squadmate

Allers is complete waste of good data storage.

And ... her character  model is down right  ****ing  ugly... its hideous.. .No Me gusta .

Just to leave no room for misinterption.. that character model needs to  killed with fire.
