I've found that when a character rubs me the wrong way, it almost always means I simply need to spend more time with the character. I found Javik to be a pill on my first game and left him in his cabin a lot. Decided to bring him out more on my next game and he skyrocketed up to being my favorite squadmate since I understood him so much better.
snippage there:
that's a fantastic point. i quite agree. i think it's very easy to 'click' with a character and then spend all one's time with them, but you're right: the more you hang out with the BW characters, you learn more. you may still dislike them, but you see where they're coming from.
Also, i found in ME1, there is a definite "bada**" scale going on in terms of party banter. The more senior/veteran person gets the 'cool/sarcastic' lines and the more innocent/younger person gets the 'newb/fng' lines.

Example:
Jr. member on Ilos: "Saren's getting away!"
Senior member in Ilos: "Yeah, okay. Who votes we take the armored tank into the creepy underground bunker?"
moments later
Jr. member: "What's going on? It's a trap!"
Sr. member: "Uh, I don't think this is Saren." <-- when you hit vigil's place

^ that happens throughout the game. and the order of preference, so far as I can tell, runs thusly: Wrex (most senior), Garrus, Kaidan, Ashley, Tali, Liara (i think, haven't fully tested liara/tali, so not sure which is which).
Point is, if you take wrex or garrus with you, ash and kaidan come off as TOTAL newbs. I found it kind of frustrating, really, esp. for Kaidan. given what we hear about him, he probably has about the same level of experience as garrus in the field - though w/ different kinds of ops, and ash, though less experienced, is hardly that newbish. i found if i took wrex or garrus along, the VS ends up really coming off as a total dork. take along tali or liara, however, and they come off as the mature, clear-headed older soldier, trying to look out for the younger member of the party.
anyhow, maybe that's just me, but i think a lot of the dislike of the VS comes from these moments where they say things that don't really fit their character in me1, given what other characters are saying and doing, and then you chat with them for a convo or two and they lay all this seeming non-sequiter stuff on you ('baat training bad!' 'i don't trust the guy who just took a rocket for me back on luna!') and you're left with a 'whaaa?'
yeah, like you gilsa, i think multiple playthroughs usually give a different perspective, but sometimes it's hard to overcome the initial dislike. i guess based on your recommendation, i'll have to try to be nice to javik.
