Bio: Usagi was born in Osaka, Japan to famous opera singer, Izayoi Souen. She grew up watching her mother perform a fusion of a modern/classic and Western/Eastern blend of operatic style music. After humanity gained an embassy on the council and started to fuse with galactic society her mother was to expand to the Citadel along with several other artists.
Before that could occur, Usagi's mother died in a car crash when she was 9. Usagi had been with her and witnessed her death. After that Usagi had 'guardians' who were to watch over her until she was 18 and able to inherit her mother's fortune. Usagi, although only 9, had a knack for computers and an eidetic memory. She was observant and knew that her guardians didn't have her best interest in mind. She ended up hacking her birth records and found that she had a father named Riff Shepard who lived in NYC.
She took money from her mother's old account, bought herself a plane ticket and tricked her way through airport security after sneaking away from her guardians. She subtly pretended to be part of a random family so no one took notice. When she got to NYC she managed to find the house (really nice brownstone) he lived in, having hacked the records earlier. She stayed hidden and waited for him to come home, it being a work day. When she spotted him get out of his car she made her move. She was smart but being only 9 not expecting how the next conversation would play out. When she introduced herself, instead of fatherly joy she received an angry panic.
Although he was sorry for her mother's death it had been agreed that no one was to know that they had an affair or that Usagi was his child. He was a married man with two boys and a daughter and a successful career. He told her that she was to never come around to his home again and that she needed to go back to her home. Devastated she watched him abandon her and enter his home where his children greeted him. Alone and angry she bought herself another plane ticket with the money she had left but instead of going back to Japan, where she knew her guardians would keep her under lock and key, she flew to Bangkok. She remembered her mother saying that had been one of her favorite places to visit.
The only thing Usagi had with her was her backpack that held her laptop, a sweater, and some candy. The next few years Usagi managed to stay hidden and taught herself code while also discovering she had the potential for strong biotic abilities after Bangkok had an 'accident' eezo exposure. Within the underground world she became known as The Rabbit, having developed a hacking program that tricked others into following one path dubbed 'the rabbit hole' while sneaking in through a back door and usually stealing money or information.
Usagi was a grey hat hacker and only stole from people who could afford it. At times she even left helpful notes to organizations she liked. When she was 15 she joined the 10th Street Reds, they thought they were getting a clever hacker but really she was using them as scapegoats should the police ever track her. She was a bit eccentric, she loved color and was semi addicted to sugar and caffeine. Her whole body was tattooed with various eastern designs and she had several piercings. She became a master at staying hidden while being out in the open. She frequented clubs and gambling joints and slept with both male and female partners alike. Mostly one night stands.
It was at 18 when she met David Anderson. A friend of his was getting married in Bangkok and he was the best man. It was total chance that she and Anderson met, he had gotten lost and ended up in one of the back alleys where she witnessed him about to get mugged by a rival gang. She was impressed with his attitude and joined the fray helping him beat back his attackers, though she used sneakier methods with her biotics than flat out fist fight. In the end she signaled one of her emergency triggers that faked a police siren to scare the gang off.
Anderson having witnessed her biotics and her resourcefulness recommended that she join the Alliance. She told him she wasn't interested but ended up emailing him the next day (having hacked his record) saying she was in. She signed up and used her father's last name as a silent middle finger to him, as if to say she's still his kid whether he liked it or not.
When she got to the Alliance they had her perform tests to see her talents. Her biotic potential was incredibly strong while also having an IQ of 178. In the end she decided to master talents in both tech and biotics. At 22 on Elysium is when the Batarians attacked, her squad had been injured leaving just her to defend the colony. For an entire day and night she fooled the enemy into thinking that there were hundreds of Alliance soldiers instead of just her while at the same time hacking their systems and causing disarray with her biotics.
When the Alliance frigate showed and defeated the Batarians, she was awarded the Star of Terra Nova and asked to join the N7 program by Admiral Hackett. Anderson help mentor her her and when she graduated hand picked her to be part of his crew on the Normandy.
