Just like Kyla, the Quarians spark a white
range of emotions for my Jane: it can go from serious aggravation to
deep affection very quickly.
Yes, the Quarians are all about extremes!
-----------------------------
Kyla was not in what one would call a "pleasant" mood when she boarded the Normandy. Fortunately, the Quarians were too focused on destroying the dreadnought to fire on their lone fighter. It was easy for Joker and EDI to catch them up.
Kyla was so in rage that after having removed the armour and combat gear, she skipped the usual washroom part to go straigh ahead to the command centre, where the Quarian admirals were still waiting. Apparently, they had found in the Normandy a handy stealth command centre... that was about to change. She walked in with a very controled fashion, full of cold rage, to eventually empty on Admiral Han'Gerrel. The Quarian was quickly quicked out of the Normandy, or rather "
invited to leave as quickly as possible". And there was Daro'Xen, who wanted to study Legion. Kyla raised her voice again (was Daro'Xen not paying attention whe she kicked Han'Gerrel?) and the admiral was invited to leave too, albeit more politely than Han'Gerrel...
Fortunately Admiral Shala'Raan was much more reasonnable, so she was allowed to stay, with Tali, acting as the liaison between the Quarians and the Normandy. Something about Quarian women maybe? Seeing how Han'Gerrel had acted during what could have turned into a wholesome fiasco, Kyla started to consider that there were a few parallels between the Quarians and the Krogans, notably in terms of how their males had to show off to compensate for the poor situation their respective species found themselves in. She also had grown increasingly frustrated with both species... Of course, she was not a psychologist, and it was more her gut feeling speaking than anything else. After having to spacewalk and being bombarded while upon an ennemy ship, one could expect her gut feeling might not be the best judge...

A few hours passed, while she was tried to figure out what to do with the Quarians. In the system, the battle was still raging. Perhaps Han'Gerrel wanted to make a point, or had something to prove? The Normandy remained hidden at midpoint between the civilian fleet and the main combat sector. That is when the news came in that Admiral Zaal'Koris had crashed on Rannoch, and that the civilian fleet was growing increasingly distressed. They spoke of trying to break in to the mass relay, but EDI assured that only the Normandy could do such a thing: the Geths had set up an efficient blockade. Admiral Shala'Raan insisted that Zaal'Koris should be rescued, and Kyla agreed.
Althought she had not completely recovered in terms of mood (the hot shower and chocolate in her quarters were, apparently, not enough), she realised that Zaal'Koris was one of the most reasonnable person on the board. Actually, she remembered the conversation they had had on the Migrant Fleet, while she was still after the Collectors; Zaal'Koris wanted the Quarians to focus on colonising new planets. Kyla had vehemently agreed, already saying that a war against the Geths would be suicidal. That was even
before she met Legion, and had her mind on the Geths changed completely.
So she set up to operate a stealth injection on Rannoch to rescue Zaal'Koris. While she was doing her last preparation in her quarters, Tali came to her.
"-
Shepard? I-- can I ask you something?"
"-
Sure Tali, what's on your mind?"
"-
Well... Who are you taking with you on the mission?"
"-
Garrus and EDI. I need you and Shala'Raan to keep cooling of the fleet's ambitions, especially that idiot Han'Gerrel."
Tali moved away slighty, in a sort of awe. It was both a good and bad thing that you could not see her facial expressions behind this mask...
"-
Shepard... you-- you are going to land... on the Homeworld! This is something that we have been waiting for three of your centuries! I would... I would like..."
Kyla frowned a bit, but replied in a soft voice:
"-
Join me?"
"-
Yes."
Kyla remained silent for a few seconds. Tali was visibly juddering.
"-
Tali, I would very much like to allow you to do that, but I will have to say no..." raising a hand to silence the mounting complaint "
look at you... I have the feeling this mission is quite important for the fleet's future. Zaal'Koris is a peace-maker, we need more of those to counter the angry segments of your people. But Rannoch, the Homeworld, it's a very touchy subject for you. I know that. That's why I cannot take the risk of having your emotions overwhelm you by taking you on Rannoch. I need clear-headed people at 100%, and I have the feeling that this would not be the case if I took you with me. That would be dangerous for yourself, and the rest of the team, myself included. Don't you think?"
"-
I-- I guess. It is true, since we arrived in the system, I have been waiting for an occassion to set a foot on the Homeworld. It is so close... almost within the reach of one's hand."
"-
Tali, look at me. I promise you will come with me when we hit at the Reapers' base. I know I just said I too much emotions would be dangerous in a critical missions, but here there's a kind of emergency. You will have enough time to prepare for the assault, and I will need your technical expertise. I will take you with me then."
"-
Alright Shepard..."
Tali looked down, and started to walk away.
"-
Tali? I... Keelah se'lai."

[Yes, I know, the screen is from an earlier scene, but I though it was appropriate given the context

Cortez dropped Kyla's team relatively far from their first objective, as the area was heavily defended by automated anti-air guns. After all the bad blood that had followed her return on the Normandy, Kyla realised she had forgotten to reset her armour's colouring nano-particules. There had been no time to generate a new pattern before leaving for Rannoch, so she shrugged off and left with a mostly black gear. Fortunately, the location of Zaal'Koris's crash landing was near the terminator, so the luminosity was reduced. She would not stand out of the scenery. Not too much, at least.

[Liked the in-universe explanation for forgetting to change her colours? :P]
Zaal'Koris took heat from the Geth long enough for Kyla to come to his rescue. The admiral insisting saving his people, civilians, instead of himself, refusing for a time to broadcast his coordinates. As much as she would have wanted to save civilians, Kyla needed Zaal'Koris and no one else. His survival was crucial and stabilising the civilian fleet and stopping them from making
yet another stupid mistake! She had to talk him down on the radio; not exactly the most pleasant part of her day, but it worked. She was relieved when Zaal'Koris jumped into the shuttle and Cortez flew away. What was it with crucial people wanting to sacrifice themselves? Zaal'Koris now, Mordin a few weeks earlier... As they were flying off to the Normandy's relative safety, the realisation stuck her hard:
"
Damn. I would have done exactly the same thing..."

[Edit - Sorry, I had hoped this post would end in a new page not to clutter page 742... Failed ]
