Either way, I've always been curious what those ridges were for. I mean, they look cool (and I'd miss them if they're not on FemShep's armor) and all, but lore-wise, do they serve a purpose? You have an omni-tool even without armor, so it's not that... looks too small for storage.

Cereal storage. You can never be too careful these days.

Their arm pieces look the same, don't they?

Thing about those pics is they're actually drawings - or at the very least, trace-overs of the old ME2 designs - if you look at the high-res versions, you can even see the brushstrokes.

It's almost like when it came to create the FemShep model, they used those pics as reference for the armor, and ended up translating the flat arm piece into the game.

I hope it's just a different piece of armor, but we'll see...

Do you have this High res version? I'd love to have the high res of femsheps art. What I have is so small.

There's an actual wallpaper/background/whatever of that FemShep artwork on the website. So you could get a better/higher res/bigger image of her from there.  ^^

Y'know, speaking of the Omni tool. One thing I've always wondered about that. Everyone seems to have one starting with 2, before that in 1 hardly anyone had one that you saw. But what I'm wondering is, what is the omni tool? I mean where is it located? It can't be in the armor, cause out of armor Shepard has it. Is it a chip installed under the flesh? Is there an answer to this anywhere?

That's actually what I had. What Kiryu just posted is much bigger. Besides, the ME3 site seems to of been redesigned rather crappily in the past few hours, I can't find anything now, especially not the wallpapers.

From the wiki:

When equipped, an omni-tool appears over a person's left hand and forearm as an orange hologram. An omni-tool can be reconfigured to appear over the right hand for a left-handed user, but this appears to be rare, as only Jacob Taylor and Garrus Vakarian have been seen having done so.

In Mass Effect 3, a new feature of the Omni-tool is revealed. Some classes can use features of it for a devastating melee attack. For example, the Soldier class can extend an "Omni-Blade" from the Omni-tool, and use it to impale an opponent.

Think: mass effect fields solidify the hologram to be inpassable, much like in star trek.
Still no clue where you can actually configure it from, but I reckon it'd be tiny.

Was this to me? If so that doesn't answer my question.

I'm not sure where it would be located, but I think I remember the codex mentioning that there are civilain omnitools and then there's the omnitools that techs use -- or that techs are the only ones that can turn an omnitool into a weapon. Something like that.

...I think. Maybe I'm remembering completely wrong or I subconsciously headcanoned the whole thing. Posted Image

Ahh here we go:

Omni-tools are handheld devices that combine a computer microframe, sensor analysis pack, and minifacturing fabricator.

I just noticed...

Um..

That's the smallest of the wallpapers, I think.

And that's the largest.

No. The omniblade is a flash-fabricated diamond-hard blade held in place by ME fields. The hologram is a "warning" so you don't cut your arm off.

Interesting question; never thought about that; it would make sense considering that biotic amps are surgically implanted at the base of the skull. But explanations about omni tools [ handheld devices] in ME 1 suggests that their installation is all external: no invasive procedure required. It is just placed around the wrist and an OSD disk installed on it defines it's *functions in accordance to manifacturers specifications.
Difficult to imagine that it just materialize out of thin air. Didn't find anything else.

*Analyse and adjust the functionality of most equipment, includind weapons and armor, from a distance.

Hmm, guess it was never mentioned. But I'd guess it's some kind of chip under the skin somewhere. Like the ID chips in Demolition Man.

I've always thought Omni Tools were either worn as over sized wrist watches/bracelets on the user's "off hand" or just a glove.

And the way computers are described as working, I'm thinking gloves are a very practical fashion item in the ME universe.

Nah, that can't be it. Shep has the Omni Tool working out of armor on the ship and when wearing the short sleeved shirt there's nothing over sized bracelet or glove on her. Hell, there's nothing on her there. It has to be some kind of under skin chip.

As Ottemis posted... She quoted the wiki which also quotes the Codex...

Omni-tools are multipurpose diagnostic and manufacturing tools used for a variety of battlefield tasks, such as hacking, decryption, or repair. They are equipped by Engineers, Sentinels, and Infiltrators to make use of their tech talents. When equipped, an omni-tool appears over a person's left hand and forearm as an orange hologram. An omni-tool can be reconfigured to appear over the right hand for a left-handed user, but this appears to be rare, as only Jacob Taylor and Garrus Vakarian have been seen having done so.

Omni-tools are handheld devices that combine a computer microframe, sensor analysis pack, and minifacturing fabricator. Versatile and reliable, an omni-tool can be used to analyze and adjust the functionality of most standard equipment, including weapons and armor, from a distance.

The fabrication module can rapidly assemble small three-dimensional objects from common, reusable industrial plastics, ceramics, and light alloys. This allows for field repairs and modifications to most standard items, as well as the reuse of salvaged equipment and applying medicine from stimulants to medi-gel.

Omni-tools are standard issue for soldiers and first-in colonists.

In addition to the standard classes, squadmates Kaidan Alenko, Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, Garrus Vakarian, and Liara T'Soni may equip upgraded omni-tools. classes without specialization with them still use them for administering first aid or activating other non-biotic non-weapon talents, but cannot make use of higher-end omni-tools.

Methinks its a handheld device.

No one wears a bracelet or compact or anything, just like you can't see the amp on the back of Biotic Shepard's neck. We just all pretend its there.
