Right, i'm about to finish Mass Effect 2 for the first time tomorrow night and I want pointers please; what does everyone think the best squad mates (yes I do know a lot of them will be doing other stuff), weapons and armor combinations are for a soldier on the final mission, and why?

Remember that you'll be dealing with barriers and no shields, if you need to strip defences with powers that is.

Either you bring people with sniper rifles, or you end up ordering them to cover manually in the platform part. The choice is yours. You having a sniper rifle of your own will help a lot when dealing with those annoying Scions.

If you bring Grunt, don't forget to switch him to AR in the Praetorian battle - otherwise he's liable to charge it or get close up and thus cause it to reload shields. (getting himself killed in the process, usually)

Rest of the mission is pretty easy on all difficulties due to copious cover and chokepoints.

Ehh? There's no Praetorian in the Collector Base.

I usually go Tali or Kasumi as tech specialist, Garrus as team leader(x2), Jack as biotic shield, Mordin as crew escort and then whoever out of the rest as my crew for combat. Legion with widow is lethal. Samara is very useful as is Miranda. I always leave two of Garrus, Grunt and Zaeed to hold the line.

There are all sorts of opinions on this. I will just give you an idea of who I usually take, but be warned doing so also reveals some spoilers so if you want to go in without any hints don't read replies in this thread. I will try to avoid blatant ones though :) This will be somewhat general. What is your build, weapons, bonus powers? Squad Cryo ammo is good against collectors with Inferno on your weapons. But I have done this probably more times with Squad Disruptor and Inferno or Tungsten on mine...

Ok now that the disclaimer is out of the way I will get to business. There are 3 sections where you choose your squad. The first part is the Infiltration section aka the Vents. It will ask you to choose a tech specialist and a squad leader for the other team. Mine are typically Tali and Garrus, so they are unavailable. Usually I take Legion because you don't get to use him much otherwise. His Widow is pretty decent, and Combat Drone can be useful distraction on Harbinger. It doesn't last forever, but usually enough to take the heat from you long enough to get him. The other squad member I take depends... Miranda is good if you leveled Warp and for her passive squad bonuses. Alternatively Kasumi's flashbang is ridiculous against Harbinger, so if you want to make life easier take her. I took Miranda and Jack recently as well and that worked out well. This works best if you are able to use their powers effectively (ie Warp and Pull or Shockwave to stagger Harbi). The oddest team I took was Tali and Legion... they are supposed to be antiSynthetic but you can get it done with dual drones. Probably the easiest non-Kasumi squad would be Mordin and a biotic, either Samara, Jack or even Miranda. Cryo Blast is great when used properly. Thane is pretty good too because he has Warp and can Throw Collectors off of ledges.

The next section is the Biotic Shield Battle, aka The Long Walk. One of your biotics will be unavailable. I almost always use Samara for that so she is out. You also still need a Fire Team leader, and I use Garrus. Optionally you may end up using someone to escort the crew... I usually use Mordin for that (even though he is a very good squad member). I like Legion and someone else. Really advice from above applies here.

The last part is the platforms then the final boss... you pick two of whoever is left. The advice is basically the same as above, again. I like Legion. Mordin and a Biotic would be decent. Kasumi is a bit OP against Harbi... Without giving too much away the rest of the team will be doing something while you are engaged in this part so who you don't pick is about as important as who you do (for this section anyway).

In general though this plays like anti-Collector missions. So powers that are good against Barriers, Armor, and Health will be helpful. Warp, Fire and Ice. Flashbang to make a mockery of Harbi, or instakill unprotected husks.

If you are looking to make it as easy on yourself as possible ( least amount of reloads ) Like everyone said, no shields, just barriers and armor, so:

Thane, Miranda, Samara are great anywhere. As Captain mentioned Legion with his widow is great ( can take out 1/2 of Harby's armor in one shot ).

On the bubble part, the folk you took on the Reaper IFF are a good choice *cough* Samara, Mordin *cough*, and please bring either the Avalanche or Arc Projector, just in case.

Last Part - same as first part ( also might want to bring the Cain ).

On my last run, infiltrator, I took Samara and Thane as immediate squad all through.

Good luck, let us know what you ended up with.

My usual squadmates of choice are:

-Thane & Miranda for the first part. Warp bombs ftw.

-Thane/Miranda & Samara/Mordin for the second part. Basically, any combination of the four will work here.

-Thane and Miranda for final part. Warp bombs ftw.

You can also substitute Kasumi for any of the above squadmates, if you wish to completely trivialize Harbinger fights via Flashbang. I do it sometimes, so I can observe his glowyness in all it's glory up close. lol

As everyone's said, Samara, Thane, Miranda, Mordin and Kasumi are top picks vs. Collectors & Reapers. Kasumi's beast vs Harby and really strong vs Collector troops & Scions. Mordin is a house against Husks & Scions. The other three are great in general.

For the final stage I usually bite the bullet a bit and make do with just Kasumi & Jack. This is more out of habit I guess, as it's probably a throwback to when ppl weren't 100% sure how to guarantee the no one left behind achievement.

You know the very first run I did "without any knowledge" I took Miranda and Tali for the last part because I figured they would be safer with me.  And Garrus had been my team leader the whole time so I left him at the door with super soldier Grunt.  Didn't have Kasumi or Zaeed yet. Only thing I did know was people complained Mordin died easily.

^ All I knew was that Kasumi, Jack and Mordin are all notoriously squishy. Come to think of it, I wonder why I never decided to get cute and send the Normandy crew back with Jack instead of Grandpa Mordin. That way I'd at least have another useful squaddie with me instead of basically a null spot. Plus, I'm sure the experience would teach my crew to do better than get themselves abducted or something silly like that in ME3. Image IPB

I always send Mordin back with the crew, but there was one time when I wanted to use Mordin on the bubble part so I sent Tali back with the crew.  It worked out fine, nobody died.

If you leave 2 out of Garrus, Grunt and Zaeed on the hold the line section, everyone will survive. I've never had any issues with that.

Took Kasumi and Tali to the human reaper with me last night on my vanguard run. Flashbang and drone lockdowns, Harby was my biatch.

That sort of depends on loyalty.

And yes Kasumi is the nice way to do the mission. Since you don't have to put up with Harbi's total bull**** all the time.

Yes of course, not loyal teammates will lower scores. But in general leaving your heavy hitters behind will be enough to do the job. In this playthrough I never unsealed Grunt, so Garrus and Zaeed stayed behind.

Anyway, I just completed collector base (along with shadow broker and arrival) a few days ago for the first time. I used Thane and Miranda all the way through and assigned the peeps to the right places, and fortunately everyone survived. Although it was easier than I thought, this was probably because I played on casual (please don't beat me! I'm just not tat good at combat...), but now I am planning on playing on insanity just to even it out a bit.

On my last SM run (it was my third) I went with Thane & Jacob (I think) for the most part and then Tali & Kasumi for the last part. I picked Mordin as an escort (used to go with Jacob before). I really wanted to see Shepard rescuing Tali from falling after the last battle (Crowning Moment of Heartwarming x10 instead of the usual x5 because hey, it's Tali XD), but they were on opposite sides and it was Kasumi who went sliding down the collapsing platform to be rescued, Tali was on the other one :)

Anyways, needless to say, everyone survived. After all, Grunt, Zaeed and Garrus were holding the line, along with Thane, Jacob, Miranda, Legion, Samara and Jack, so those Collectors never stood a chance. I'd love to see the holding the line segment, as well as the second fireteam combat as a playable segment. It would make great DLC material LOL .
