Did the elves have long necks? I don't recall.

Actually, looking back, I kinda do. Kinda.

Well, the next time I meet a snot nosed American I'll just assume ALL Americans are like that. Hell I remember that German fellow from last week, he stole a handbag a think? Hmph! Germans what can you do...

I hope you know where I'm getting at here...

What, that we should apologize to all the elves on the BSN who we've offended by insinuating they have long necks and oddly shaped noses that make them hideous and hard to look at?

Okay.

To any elves who may be reading this, whether you are from Kingdoms of Amalur, The Elder Scrolls, or any other video game or video game series, I apologize for lumping you together with the hideous examples of elves in Dragon Age 2. I was offensive, insinuating that you may have a long neck and an oddly shapen nose. You may in fact wear shoes and not be thinner than a tree branch. My sincerest apologies, to all you elves out there.

There, I did it.

I actually feel better now.

EDIT-

Jesus Christ, that came off as passive aggressive RAWR speak when I was being honest. Rofl.

Next time I should throw a lulz in there. Or a smiley. I'm going to throw a smiley in there right now.

Also, apologies if offended. Not my intent.

They should switch to an unreal engine for the next game. That would be awesome

No vitriol or bad intentions here, I actually thought that's what he meant.

Otherwise, I ALSO don't get it.

They're fictional characters, its not like we're hurting their feelings.

On top of that, that neck is shared with pretty much every elf in the game. No way around it.

To be fair, that Merrill cutscene is bad due not to the design but due to how Bioware handled the animations of the cutscene.

It's the same thing with how Bioware handled Morrigan for the Dark Ritual. She looked pretty bad in those cutscenes as well when she was moving up the bed, but we don't hold that against her actual design.

And as a note, some people do have naturally elongated necks. I'm one such person. For the Elves, it seems to be a natural trait of all of their kind. Or at least most if everyone didn't have a long neck.

But, as I said in my original post -- and subsequent posts that followed -- I prefer it if this thread didn't become one that focuses solely on the racial design.

I'd prefer it if that came secondary and the visualization of Elven culture -- with vague references to their four parent cultures thrown in sometimes -- came first.

Also, Darkspawn. Dear god the Darkspawn.

Not trying to police my own thread, but I think the culture takes more precedence than the divided opinions on the racial design which has been done to death in about.... 18 other threads before.

I'm saying that if your going to critisize the elven designs don't bring out the worse photos in the internet to back up your arguement. That picture of Merrill is just...

but even so we all know that she and Fenris were probably the best designed elves in the game. There are plenty of other examples too... And that elf maid? Well there are tonnes of mods that make her look decent, that's enough to say that you can actually make things happen with this design.

Well, I think the new Genlock design and the Hurlock Alpha design are pretty great.

But otherwise yea, DAO at least made the Darkspawn look like something you might actually fear -- well, save for Genlocks -- whereas DAO's Hurlocks and Ogres just made me laugh. And cry.

I've posed this question before, though I haven't yet received an answer: Would it be possible for PC people to import the DAII style Darkspawn into DAO and then work on them using the suggestions I gave? I would think so since the Warden style armor and the Elven designs were both put into DAO.

think it would do wonders to actually see what the Darkspawn could look like by being both unique and frightening if some PC modder was willing to do this.

Pretty please any modder out there? Image IPB

DAO's Darkies looked scary. I remember the Battle of Ostagar, and the cutscene leading up to it. My Goodness, that was excellent. Very well done.

In DA2, I just laughed. Laughed so hard. Ergh. I must miss the DAO art style more than I know.

If you played Legacy I think you'll see that Bioware agree with you. The Genlok is an...improvement from the silly designs of DA2...but the Hurlok Alpha... my that's a beauty!

I did not in fact play Legacy. I disliked DA2 enough that I made the decision to not support it with any DLC purchases.

The "new" darkspawn in Legacy look terrible too. And the Shriek people found in the files looks atrocious too.

Threw in a few other darkspawn buddies too. Also, compare that second picture to this picture below and tell me which one looks intimidating, and which one looks like a circus.

The only things the da2 hurlocks need improved on are more rot/taint/blood and sharp teeth again, the creepy lurk/scuttle/run thing they do now is great. Never want to to see the Origins ones again. Never liked them at all, the first video I saw of DAO had scenes from Ostagar in it, saw the horde of bland zombies almost decided not to buy it, fortunately I decided against that. I started to like the darkspawn redesigns in Awakening for the disciples, those were rightly scary.

DA2 Genlocks are pretty close to perfect IMO, I went back to origins and sorely missed those buggers from Legacy. The new shrieks are better than the werewolf shrieks of Origins as well. I never understood how elf-born darkspawn turned into dogs.

Elves just need more attention now. Marethari, Master Ilen, Merrill, Fenris, Lia, Varania and Jethann looked great by my standards.

I think the Hurlock Alpha looks great myself, as it adheres to the lore of Alpha Darkspawn more than DAO's did.

I think the armor is crap though, but that's an inherent flaw with all of the Darkspawn's armor in DAII. I'd like to see the Darkspawn have armor that looks half-assed but still looks effective.

...and also doesn't look like you might poke your eye out.

Yes, even the Hurlock Alpha. Terrible the whole lot of them.

Spikeyness doesn't make armour look poorly put together, it just makes it look bad and just leaves me wondering what the hell was going through their heads when they made it; there's a difference between constructing something crudely with the resources you have and simply just making something wrong.

For improvised armour I'd have expected perhaps a thin chestplate or even leather and then padding or plates pretty much stuck on to various parts of the full armour set to make it look like the design was flawed and they tried to patch it up by sticking armour on to weaker sections of it.

this to me is the type of armor the Darkspawn should wear. Well, the style of the armor they should wear. It looks half-assed, and if there was a chestplate to go with it then it'd look like Darkspawn armor. Crude, yet effective more or less.

With variety. I wouldn't want them all to have the same armor appearance.

See, that looks great. You can see all throughout the armour how pieces have just been stuck on to bolster the amount of protection, like around the shins or around the waist, rather than 'lol spikes'
