Deception Excerpt
Foreword:
It's been a long week. Several days ago eager fans of the Mass Effect franchise got their hands on a lengthy excerpt of the latest in a series of tie-in novels, "Deception". A few of us even got legit copies before the street date. What we found was pretty depressing -- a novel rife with errors. I've no interest in taking personal potshots at any fellow human being, but the inarguable truth here is that author William C. Dietz, taking up the reins after Drew Karpyshyn moved over to development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, seemingly made little effort to verify any of his writing with BioWare, nor did the editing process do much to correct his mistakes.
We aren't talking small-time either. I know some of us are going to get irate over the tiniest detail, and I can respect that but I tend to let a reasonable measure of continuity errors slide when enjoying a piece of entertainment. In this book's case, however, some rather unsettling mistakes were made, including but by no means limited to a disrespectful elimination of autism within a teenage girl for no apparent reason (the girl, by the way, was artificially aged several years on top of that) and the alteration of the series' only completely gay male character thus far into a heterosexual. These are pretty touchy issues that strike some serious chords with plenty of gamers.
One major goal of this discussion thread as well as the now-famous Google document detailing the dozens upon dozens of errors found in the book, and indeed a major goal for every contributing member here, is to make fandom well-aware of the troubles of "Deception". That said, I personally encourage all manner of discussion over this novel, seeing as how this is indeed a thread on its existence. As such, positive comments are totally welcome here, but be advised that there is an overwhelming opposition to the book's storyline, treatment of characters, setting mishaps and such so you may be hard-pressed to find support.
Despite that, let's be civil. Let's be shining examples of civilized individuals coming together to discuss a book and let's not be mean-spirited. It's taken a tie-in disaster to unite us; I'd rather we remain courteous and respectful so as not to send the world the wrong message about Mass Effect and its fans. We're devoted to upholding a degree of integrity within a franchise we enjoy. We aren't asking much.

To be frank, several of these remarkable individuals have done far more than I to keep the momentum going in a goal-driven, passionate way both here in the thread and of course by constantly updating the Google document. My time is limited; without the support of everyone mentioned here as well as plenty of folks I've no doubt forgotten, the fan criticisms of "Deception" may well have been no more than a blip of any average fellow's radar. Instead we've drawn the attention of numerous news outlets and we've made countless fans more actively aware. I thank you sincerely.
