I'm going to go with my theory that Deitz was in the middle of writing a manuscript before being contracted for Deception. He then decided that if he slapped the Mass Effect name on his current WIP, changed the names of characters and locations, and did a minimal amount of research in order to get some specific things right, he'd get more money and nobody'd be the wiser.

yeah me too please, i don't want to spend my money in this book but still i'd like to know what happens just before ME3.

But I do have a massive problem with Deception, as does everyone else in this thread.

We're all together, united. Its wonderful.

Please, don't waste your money. Unless you're the type that enjoys bad literature, in which case, buy several copies and share them with your friends.

If anything, that makes Kai Leng more believable as a character.

"You killed Marisa!" [That's Nick. Not that the text bothers to tell us that]

Fighting raged all around and Hendel was dimly aware of a ground-shaking BOOM as he propped himself up on his elbows.

"Marisa? Was she your girlfriend?" [This is Hendel's line]

"Yes, damn you... We were going to get married." [And this is Nick's]

Now this Marisa? She's mentioned on all of three pages in the entire novel as best I can tell. Character development!

But at least there is this: Nick does NOT hook up with Gillian. Thank God for small favors. *snicker*

Deception is at best tangentially connected to ME3, Dark. I thought it would tie in nicely, with the characters making appearances in-game, but the book seemed to have just swerved wildly off-target.

As you know, Kai Leng eating cereal while at Anderson's makes him more believable as a character!
No, this is more than a 'kink'. This is a butchering of the portrayal we've been presented with so far. I'm not even talking about this scene in particular but from all that I've read. This guy will only be known as Leng.

They could've introduced all these characters from Retribution and the earlier novels in ME3 and it would've been fine.

Now with Deception its just nonsensical.

Rudimentary creature of blood and flesh.  Fumbling in ignorance.  Incapable of understanding. There is a realm of bad writing so far beyond your experience you cannot even imagine it.
