You're being anal. There's NOTHING suggest that it's an impossibility that a female salarian could be a merc, no matter how unlikely. You can't deem something to be in error just because you don't like it. That just serves to illegitimize your other efforts.

Haha, well indeed.  But it would be the way out of the problem and therefore a logical explanation and not an error.  It is true that is is based on supposition rather than clear evidence, since the clear evidence states they are 18.  Oops.

Given this, there is no way out of the difficulty.  Alas.
