I want this post to be noticed and chewed on, bear with me please.I'm being pretty serious here. I'm not angry or anything, I stopped giving a **** about the whole thing after the comics, actually I already have all the Mass Effect things I own in my "Good franchise gone horribly wrong" drawer along with Dragon Age and Heroes of Might and Magic.
I just can't comprehend what has happened here? I'm not even going to compare to Star Wars, because they have a whole branch for double-checking expanded universe things, I'm not even expecting this, I'm just curious - nobody read it? Nobody asked mister Dietz to show his work while he was still writing? Nobody supervised him?
You guys are blaming the poor guy for this atrocity. Why blame him? He's a writer. He writes silly novels for video games, did one for Star Wars, other franchises, apparently has his own thing going with his own universe, co wrote a video game I think. He earns money this way. He's not required to know every single fact and trivia from the Mass Effect universe, he was just contracted to write a novel... but someone else should be there to know every single fact and trivia from the Mass Effect universe and tell him where the line is. For me, William C. Dietz is clear as crystal, it's a pretty honest work.
The problem is, whoever contracted him on this novel, stopped giving a damn past that point. He gave they guy free hand in doing whatever he wanted to and (from what I can see) a vague concept of what Mass Effect is about. Mister Dietz has quire a few books on his list, someone is publishing them, so it means he can't be that bad. Of course we could blame him for not reading thoroughly all the previously existing books, comics, for not playing the both games while paying attention to what's happening on the screen. We could, since it's a reasonable thing to do if you're about to spend some time writing a novel about all that. But I think we should blame all this stuff on the person who gave him the intellectual property worth quite a few bucks and did not make him do all those things or at least gave him someone who did to consult with.
Of course I'm writing this with the assumption that mr. Dietz didn't read the books, didn't read the comics and didn't play the game... if he actually did and then wrote this, it means he truly is what this thread accuses him of being - an idiot.
If my assumption is true, this is a disgusting example of incompetence somewhere inside Electronic Arts, BioWare or whoever holds his hand on this franchise. Incompetence in a) not giving the person working on the novel a clear image of what he's doing,

not supervising him during the process and finally, c) releasing it.
And they actually made him look bad, conveniently avoiding the outrage among fans they caused.
