Gotta be honest, Dietz doesn't have an appetizing writing style.

Isn't mature enough for me. Too childish.

It doesn't help that he's basically explaining to us what we already know too. He could've handled that so much better, yet he chose to spoon-feed us everything. He's alienating those who already know (who get bored and point out slightest inconsistencies in his explanations) and those that don't (who get confused and thus bored anyway).

Strip out all the lore inconsistencies out of the thing and you've still got one terribly written book on your hands.

I've read bad fanfiction better than this.

It's literally childish (as in "sh*t kids call each other on the playground during recess") at times:

Hendel had been watching long enough to recognize many of the employees and give them nicknames
like “Stick Figure,” “Four Eyes,” and “Fatso.”

Don't forget how Leng had to pee into a vase, not urinate or relieve himself.

Wow, I completely missed the fact that Gillian's jewel *couldn't* contain a holo of her father being Reaperised, if her father was the one that gave it to her.

Not to mention that she was ON A QUARIAN SHIP DURING RETRIBUTION.

WTF.

That is unbelievably nonsensical.

Yeah, and Paul sent it to her right before she left the Academy....WITH HIM.

Oh, geezus... so now not only can Gillian form a Singularity (which, ok fine, that was previously established in Ascension), but now Hendel and Nick can TOO?!?

Even the singularities explode people's faces.

Oh, and Gillian can Charge without a L5n implant.

Cause you know, she's a Level 3 Biotic.

Yeah, I knew about that part.... she can also chuck Reaves like there's no tomorrow, apparently. <_<

This thread did to my day what Deception did to the lore of the ME universe and that is utterly ruin it. Only difference is my day was ruined in a good way. I have no idea how this travesty could get to print in the state of the preview. Poor form on Dietz, Bioware, Del Ray, and Ballantine Books.

I can not wait to see an official response from the powers that be on this mess.

Oh yeah, man. She's throwing reaves all over the place. At some Krogan, at TiM. There are reaves everywhere. Charges too. And some warps.

I thought technically only Asari could use Reave (and Shepard) does she heal too through reaves?

I want this post to be noticed and chewed on, bear with me please.

I'm being pretty serious here. I'm not angry or anything, I stopped giving a **** about the whole thing after the comics, actually I already have all the Mass Effect things I own in my "Good franchise gone horribly wrong" drawer along with Dragon Age and Heroes of Might and Magic.

I just can't comprehend what has happened here? I'm not even going to compare to Star Wars, because they have a whole branch for double-checking expanded universe things, I'm not even expecting this, I'm just curious - nobody read it? Nobody asked mister Dietz to show his work while he was still writing? Nobody supervised him?

You guys are blaming the poor guy for this atrocity. Why blame him? He's a writer. He writes silly novels for video games, did one for Star Wars, other franchises, apparently has his own thing going with his own universe, co wrote a video game I think. He earns money this way. He's not required to know every single fact and trivia from the Mass Effect universe, he was just contracted to write a novel... but someone else should be there to know every single fact and trivia from the Mass Effect universe and tell him where the line is. For me, William C. Dietz is clear as crystal, it's a pretty honest work.

The problem is, whoever contracted him on this novel, stopped giving a damn past that point. He gave they guy free hand in doing whatever he wanted to and (from what I can see) a vague concept of what Mass Effect is about. Mister Dietz has quire a few books on his list, someone is publishing them, so it means he can't be that bad. Of course we could blame him for not reading thoroughly all the previously existing books, comics, for not playing the both games while paying attention to what's happening on the screen. We could, since it's a reasonable thing to do if you're about to spend some time writing a novel about all that. But I think we should blame all this stuff on the person who gave him the intellectual property worth quite a few bucks and did not make him do all those things or at least gave him someone who did to consult with.

Of course I'm writing this with the assumption that mr. Dietz didn't read the books, didn't read the comics and didn't play the game... if he actually did and then wrote this, it means he truly is what this thread accuses him of being - an idiot.

If my assumption is true, this is a disgusting example of incompetence somewhere inside Electronic Arts, BioWare or whoever holds his hand on this franchise. Incompetence in a) not giving the person working on the novel a clear image of what he's doing, B) not supervising him during the process and finally, c) releasing it.

And they actually made him look bad, conveniently avoiding the outrage among fans they caused.

Yeah I thought you guys were over-reacting at first, but even the first few chapters have been pretty head scratching. I'll try to finish it today or tomorrow so I can make a final judgement. Even if you can overlook the mistakes, the writing itself is just rather corny. Not that I expect a whole from a video game novel... but seriously it's like reading someone's fan fiction. I can't think of any other way to describe it.

I will admit I probably wouldn't have noticed the naming issues with the Quarians and maybe a few other things as in general I don't have much of an interest the novels. Revelation was good, Ascension was about as good, and Retribution was kind of meh. But this is just bleh. I now hate myself for being nerdy enough to read the books. Although the title "Deception" is very fitting. I mean really the errors in this book just shouldn't be here. It's pretty apparent no one who actually knew anything about Mass Effect even bothered to proof read this or did so very hastily. And if all else you think Dietz could have checked the Mass Effect Wiki and avoided these errors himself.

Too bad that everything Mass Effect related seems to be ending up as a train wreck lately. If I didn't know better I'd swear Casey or someone else integral to the series was trying to sabotage it. That or all the things lately have been some weird marketing campaign designed to create sympathy for Bioware. Or really bad luck...

Though I think Arnold can offer some good advice for this book.

Sod it, I'm rewriting the prologue. First chapter too if I have the time. Just for me: it will feel like an exorcism of some sort.

Hah, you really think Dietz would go that far in? To him reave is just another "pew pew pew" that injures people. He just got its inner workings by its name!

I wouldn't say we're overreacting because the lack of a response from Bioware up to this point(while this thread's been followed and monitored) tells us that it MUST matter to them now.

We got their attention.

Hello all, this is my first post, but I couldn't stay quiet about this travesty that might enter ME canon.  I respect Bioware greatly, but the first 50 or so pages were horrible.  Dietz plays at best fast and loose with the canon, and the writing peaks at distinctly average.  If Bioware doesn't decanonize this, this year might just see the apocalypse as a result of thousands of Mass Effect fans entering a Krogan blood rage and destroying the world along with the book!  Ok, that last part was a joke, but I still hope this book isn't canon, and I am glad to do my part to support this movement.  Keelah Se'lai!

Please stop repeating the same thing. There will be no reaction. What do you expect? That they addmit they allowed someone to slap their franchise? Even if anyone there feels that way, they are part of a corporation and can't say anything unless it's an officiall statement.

And there will be no official statement. Corporations do not apologize for bad products because they would have to addmit the product was bad.

And if we keep thinking like that, nothing will change and the status quo will remain the same.

I tend to think we can change things for the better. And we're getting closer to that. Their attention's been grabbed, they're tight lipped(for now), but if we get an official announcement that the novel is disavowed, we won.

AND they won. A half-assed victory for them, but better than a complete loss.

Admitting they flubbed is better for them then keeping quiet.
