SPOILER CITY: Toothbrush Scene

So Leng swung his feet over the side of the bed and
onto the fl oor. Then came the task of pulling his boots
on. Once they were secured he slipped the toothbrush
into one of them and stood. Kim jerked her head
toward the open door. “You know the drill. Get
going.”

[...]

But she wasn’t about to give up. The head butt was
one of many things learned from Hendel. She felt the
contact, saw the look of surprise on Leng’s face, and
tried to knee him in the groin. But rather than knock
the assassin unconscious the blow made him angry.
The weapon had been a toothbrush. But after
countless hours of surreptitious sharpening the formerly
innocent object had been transformed into a
prison- style shank. The point went deep. Gillian
jerked spasmodically, frowned, and stared up at Leng
with an accusing look on her face. She tried to say
something, but there was too much blood and all that
came out was a gargling sound.

[...]

Kahlee opened a medi- gel- impregnated battle dressing
and wrapped it around the point where the weapon
had gone in. But it was too little too late. That much
was obvious as she leaned forward to look down into
the teenager’s face. “Gillian? It’s Kahlee.”

So Gillian and Nick die? No wonder he changed their ages to 18 or it would be "too edgy." Also probably why Gillian's autism mysteriously vanishes. Naturally they wouldn't want a helpless autistic getting impaled with a tooth brush.

Are you freaking kidding me? That's the worst ending...ever...of all time...

I'm literally baffled. This is the fourth attempt I've made at writing this out. I don't even know where to begin.<_<

Alright, I'll give my current thoughts and complaint on this dreck (excluding the countless lore/canon screw-ups):

How f***ing worthless is this novel when the entire plot within is MEANINGLESS? The only major outcome that occurs in Deception is that the three characters previously created in the novel Ascension - Gillian, Hendel, and Nick - are all randomly killed off for no other purpose other than erase their existence from the ME universe:

- Hendel is murdered by Nick for accidently killing Nick's "fiancee" (a girl he's known for only a few days on Omega)

- Nick is randomly killed by a salarian who works for Aria (one of her "most trusted advisers".... which we've never met before and will never see again beyond Deception)

- Gillian is killed by Kai Leng with a god-damn sharpened toothbrush

Other than that, nothing matters in the this novel to the plot of the ME universe, nothing - Anderson and Kahlee make no progress into investigating either Cerberus or the Reapers, the Council still actively dismisses the existence of the Reapers, there is no mention of the events of Arrival or the escalating tensions between the Alliance and the batarians over it, there is no active effort by Cerberus into any of their secret projects... none of the characters change or evolve, none of the conflicts previously established in other media are resolved, not a damn thing...

This is no "lead-in" to Mass Effect 3 as some of the developers claimed... there's nothing for it to lead anywhere! It's utterly pointless, a complete waste of the tree used to make the paper to print this worthless book and an absolutely waste of the time and energy of anyone who bothers to read through it.

This is the most important post I've seen in a while. Literally, the book is pointless. Three characters, two of whom we have not seen since Ascension, are borught back by Dietz, for the sole purpose of killing them off 300 some pages later. To no descernable purpose. Nothing is gained by their deaths.

THE ENTIRE THING IS COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS.

And because the dead characters had a lot of ties to the planet!

Wait, no.

For those of you who may think this is too long, what AVPen is basically saying is: Do not waste your time reading this utterly worthless novel. Nothing worthwhile can be found within its pages.

To clarify, Anderson and Kahlee bury Gillian, Nick, and Hendel all on Eden Prime (apparantly forgetting to inform Nick's parents about it in the process....) for no damn reason other than "Hey, Eden Prime's was in the first Mass Effect!"

Stop trolling.  I remember people a lot of people dying in this book.  What kind of ending would two people banging each other be after all of that?

No, you're right. There's totally a council meeting in the last chapter too, where they again refuse to believe any of this reaper nonsense.

Also Anderson plants some trees.

Then they go to a hotel and apparently have more sex.

......Really?  What was that quote earlier in the thread about fans slamming their head into whatever's hardest near them?  Cause that's about my reaction now.

I also managed to dig Kahlee's little memorial service out of Google:

“There,” she said, as she stood. “They were troubled people, but each was trying to do something good, even if they went about it in self- destructive ways. I’ll miss them.”

Anderson nodded. “Well said. Come on . . . It’s a two- mile walk back to the hotel.”

That's what happens in Deception?! I just read the excerpt so I had no idea beyond that. But this is where the story goes? It just kills off three established characters, making the whole buildup completely and utterly pointless?

What complete and other garbage!

As I recall, Nick wants to spend time there to practice so he can be deemed a Level 3 Biotic.
I think it's a training place of some sort, but I'm not sure.

It's some kind of arena where biotics fight each other to level up.

EDIT: Was .

What a waste. So much potential for a good wrap up in this book, but Dietz dun effed it up, HARD. I would have been fine with Gillian getting killed by the toothbrush, if we'd actually had some ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT paired with a worthwhile STORY.

Somehow they are not depressed enough over the violent deaths of two children to be deterred from having more sex.

Why does the volus refer to anderson and co. as "earth people" rather than "earth-clan"?

It just makes me want to scream.

Is Dietz psychotic? Did he really think that fans would be satisfied by this? That reviving characters people had an interest in, and then killing them in the stupidest way possible would make for a good tie-in?

It's beyond ridiculous.

SPOILER CITY Continued:

The sun had just started to dip below Eden Prime’s
western horizon as Kahlee went out to join Anderson
on the balcony. The hotel was located on the twentythird
fl oor of the pyramid- shaped “Amazon” arcology
that was located near the center of a thousand
square miles of virgin rain forest. There was nothing
but an undulating carpet of green for as far as the eye
could see. “It’s beautiful,” she said, as David put an
arm around her shoulders. “Especially after Omega.”
“So you’re glad we came?”
“Very. We needed this.”
“I agree. But there’s still work to be done.”
“You mean the ‘army’ that Gillian referred to?”
“Yes.”
“Maybe Gillian was wrong.”
“Mythra Zon might know, but she got away.”
Kahlee nodded. “Maybe we can fi nd her.”
“But not tonight.”
“No,” Kahlee said, as the sun disappeared. “Not
tonight.”

Meaning after they plant trees in the memory of the dead, they watch the sunset and discuss how nothing they did matter. YEAH!
