So Kai Leng pisses in vases now.

K.

I don't actually have any problem with that. He was on stakeout, comparable for guard duty. In situation where you can't leave your post it's helluva more comfortable to have a bottle, vase anything around to use rather than urinate on floor where you may need to dive if things get hot or in your pants that would be very uncomfortable and might make following person on foot difficult. People who notice wet pants might react to it and if person that you are following would go inside a bar or hotel where you are checked you wouldn't be able to enter. Vase is ok.

Don't worry guys I'll be sure to post a honest review when I'm done.

It's because he is on a stakeout.

One would think that 200 years in the future, they would have developed some kind of "waste mechanism" for situations like this.

OMG, this is hillarious. Pissing in a friggin' vase. Muahahahaha
If nothing else, we gotta give this Dietz guy credit for humor, unintentional or not.

I thought that was what the extra compartment in my suit was for? OOPS:?

Reading the excerpts made me cringe, and this is coming from a non-native speaker. I enjoyed the other three novels, but Deception is on par with the terrible Guild Wars books - which, on a bright side, only suffered from bland writing style.

In all sadness, preorder cancelled. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/uncertain.png[/smilie]

It sucks. I take no pleasure in desseminating this crap. I'm just as disappointed as you are. I read a piece of Tali fanfic last night that was better written then this book in every concievable way.

I think the issue is the use of the word "pee" rather then "urinate" or "relieve himself". It makes it sound like the target audience is 10 year old boys.

It's not that he pissed in the vase, it's more that:

a) He's a top-tier Cerberus agent; it's silly he hasn't got something more sophisticated to use than a rifle scope

And

B) It was an utterly unnecessary detail. Seriously. Where Dietz should have extrapolated (like say, plot-relevant dialogue and characterisation) he simply summarises. The result is ****** and cornflakes.

Well, I must say when I first started hearing about the hate for what's come out so far about this book and Dietz's writing I didn't pay much mind to it. There was similar hate for Dietz's book Halo: The Flood among Halo fans, and I thought it was fine. Much better than Eric Nylund's writing in many of the other Halo books. But reading about some of these excerpts for Deception has really got me thinking that maybe I should just skip this book. Some of this does sound really bad. I was avoiding reading any previews of the book so I could enjoy the whole thing when it came out but I might just read them to determine if I should buy it or not.

How about: his legs were starting to cramp up when something happened.

I suspected that but weren't sure.

However, now you mention the audience it brought one thing I have been wondering back in my mind. What is the target audience? Mass Effect fans of course but characters in Deception act like they were from early / preteen novels I used to read when I was a kid rather than characters from something aimed for young adults crowd.

I made that same observation yesterday. It feels that way to me. Anderson and Kahlee are sort of background characters. The story is really about the two 15...I mean 18 year olds.

It's a bizarre way for Dietz to go, especially since he claims he read the previous novels. Unless someone higher up actually told him to gear it for children. As though children are going to read this.

Shouldn't mass effect really have armor that would allow you to pee in it without a problem?

What you say about using a rifle scope is something I missed. I didn't even expected him to take that kind of detail in account.
What comes to his way to tell the story is something... for someone who doesn't speak English as native it's like someone is hitting your nerves repeatedly to the point you go numb and just don't care or notice anymore. I can say that ****** and cornflakes is IMO very honest summary of this novel though.

I didn't catch that one! Wow! The pee thing is just too ludicrous for words.

They got the title all wrong, it should totally be "Mass Effect: Misconception"! Because that's what it is, in every meaning of the word.

Just received conformation that my pre-order has been succesfully canceled.

I'm actually kinda sad that my ME novel collection won't be complete, but there's no way in hell I'm paying for Deception (the name is actually quite appropriate tbh).
To Mr. Dietz and to whoever at Bioware approved of this attrocity, I say thank you for at least providing the cummunity the material for endless cereal and vase pissing memes.

Yep. It's like Dietz was given all the details and misunderstood all of them. L3 means the level of biotic you qualify as. Mass Effect fields are a magical catch-all that power every technology. Quarians wear suits made of scrap metal. And the Asari and Salarians are just like humans, they love stir-fry and curry.

Personally I think it's called deception because whoever bioware got to work with him clearly deceived Dietz into believing that this was how Mass effect worked.

He's climbin' in your windows, snatchin' your cereals up, trying to eat them. So you all need to hide yo' Cheerios, hide yo' Froot Loops, and hide yo' Cap'n Crunch, 'cause Kai Leng's eating everything up in here!

Even Anderson and Kahlee do some really weird things, Didy posted about that in previos thread.

What comes to other things, first they artificially make Gillian and Nick 18 years old and then make it like a story for younger audience, but wouldn't it make more sense to leave Gillian and Nick to what their age actually is according to timeline?

What surprises me most about peeing episode is that rather gory details - gory to "I'd like to not read this part, and if I have to, I would like to not get mental images" - and definitely childish things are neighbouring in one novel:

Zhuinden wrote...

izmirtheastarach wrote...

Just for kicks, from the free preview:

The "warp" tore the asari biotics asunder. One monent they were there,
and the next they wern't, as chunks of raw meat flew in every direction.
The resulting blood mist was still floating in the air...

...and would remain so for a few seconds as the half-executed
“pull,” which the asari had been creating at
the moment of their deaths, lost its coherency.

Yup, it's really there.

The minutes crawled by. People came and went.
There was a scuffle between two prostitutes. T’Loak’s
mercs chased them away. More time passed. Finally,
just as Leng was about to pee in the vase he had selected
for that purpose
, something happened.

I'm not that much of an expert on this subject, but is this a usual element in novels? I mean, is that detail really necessary? I'm confused. :?

Or he deceived them into thinking he actually understood the material.

They can't be 15 because of what he does with them. There are multiple reasons that become clear when you read through all the material you can access with the experts and the limited preview.

Don't forget the asari biotic air kisses. Oh man... :D

I just hope newcomers don't see this on shelves and read it before getting exposed to any other material out there. It will color their perceptions of Mass Effect Universe forever! :o

Yeah, Revelation was a decent springboard into the ME universe. This is absolutely not. You would be so confused.
