Someone's probably already posted, but since I'm back I thought I'd bring it up.

The Mass Effect Wiki has an open letter to BioWare up, and we have a nice big banner on the front page and the Deception article, asking people to read it. Apparently the letter has also been sent to the email addresses of some BioWare staff.

I'm sure fans would want something more forceful, but I really just wanted to express our disappointment in a calm, professional, humble manner, without making any demands or insulting anyone involved. Happily the other admins were 100% behind me on this, and we tried to get something out nice and quick, to keep this thing going.

I hope you like it, and get behind it in the comments (I don't think you need to register, but if you do it's pretty simple).
As for how to handle the content in the articles. That will take more time, and more editors with the book so we can hash those issues out, but in the mean time we've tried to make our disappointment clear.

Kudos to you guys!

And back from a nap.

So, I see we're near a hundred mistakes on that list of errors.  How many of those are Dietz betraying the "LLLLOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRREEEEEEEE"?

Oh, and anyone working on artwork or some such for the Happy Bowls from Omega?

I think the color scheme helped. This article definately shows the situation in the best light.

EDIT: btw is anyone keeping track of these so Jeff can add then to the OP later?

Hey Guys not too sure whos in charge with this, highlighting the errors red and blue on the doc is a help.

The news outlets only list about 3 or 4 errors on each report. So i think we should  get our 3 or 4 worst errors or the 3 or 4 that we think would help our cause the most impact and have them added to the top as an extra section ready for any media outlet to pick up.

Someone else proposed this earlier , I think it would help our cause

By the way we have another news report up:

http://www.joystiq.c...s-effect-novel/

That would be Yuoaman. A few of us put in our two cents as to what needed to be highlighted. We've also got a snippet at the beginning for readers and the media.

A part of me wonders, with how this book is so oddly written, if Dietz wasn't given a list of things that needed to happen in the book and then let loose on the ME Universe. Like the Tantalus Drive being on the Batarian slaver ship--maybe that's something that happens as a result of Arrival, part of an olive branch or reparations. Or the deaths, and the Batarians having some type of contact with the Council.

I'm not saying he did it well--obviously not--but maybe some of the truly odd things were just really poorly handled plot-points.

Or maybe he just liked the word "Tantalus".

There was only ever one Tantalus drive core built (by the Alliance anyway...Cerberus built the one for the SR2). I highly doubt that they'd build another one,,,worth the cores of thousands of fighters...to appease batarians, especially on a freighter, not a military vessel.

Reminds me of the Tantalus field from the mirror universe episode in Star Trek: TOS.

Oh, MAN.  If Dietz had found a way to use THAT, this book would have been freakin' AWESOME :o!

The Tantalus is one thing that stood out to me; is it ever mentioned outside of ME1? Regardless, that's a fairly specific thing to mention, which makes his other blinding flaws even more odd.

What the hell was he doing? Skimming the wiki for random buzzwords? To make it sound like he actually knew what he was talking about?

I thought it was concluded that Deception takes place before Arrival?

No, I believe that Mac Walters stated that Deception took place after Arrival and before Conviction (that comic that introduced James Vega).

Exactly! With how terrible his grasp of lore is, for him to get some very specific things right, or referenced correctly, or whatever, makes me wonder just what happened. Did he pull a TVTropes and start clicking on link after link after link, or maybe he just used Random Page over and over.

The world may never know.

He writes like the Tantalus is the name for ME drives on every ship.  I guess he saw the word and what it was in ME1 and made a few assumptions.

I guess I should be glad I did not order this yet... uh.

Anyway, to those who have read it, is the book so bad it would be crap even with stuff fixed up?

Yeah, it would be a horribly written novel even were it perfectly researched.

The writing is actually quite horrible and childish.  Fix the lore issues and you have what appears to be officially sanctioned, poorly-written fanfiction.  Fix the writing and it's an okay follow-up with a depressing ending.

Yeah, some of the most ridiculous passages that we've been laughing at this week have nothing to do with lore issues.

Like Assassins breaking into houses and eating people's cereal. Stabbing folks with sharpened toothbrushes, eating Mexican food, etc.

There's probably enough material to write an entry under oddity--actually poor writing. How Dietz applies human culture to all the other races: from salarian curry, to asari stir-fry and funerals, quarian concepts of adulthood, religious beliefs and the like.

If he couldn't stick to lore, couldn't he have thought of anything original? Oh wait...asari air-kisses....<_<

I read the whole book, and I felt awkward the entire time while reading it.
The errors listed on
https://docs.google...._cmo/edit?pli=1

is very detailed and so far has an extensive list of many errors. How can so many errors be overlooked? It doesn't make sense and it's quite a disappointment. While reading the story, I did my best to ignore these faults and reserved any judgement until after I read the whole thing.
I'll let the list speak for itself, but the book was disappointing if nothing else. IMO, the book accomplished nothing except to kill off a few characters from the previous novels.

Make it stop..... Please Bioware put us out of our misery and denounce this crap as canon.
