Machinima has gotten the word of these errors as well as the Google doc containing the list.

Too bad the actual article they link to is just more fan mocking.

I know.

I pisses me off. People who are into gaming culture telling otther people off because they care about gaming culture and quality control. That's just sad.

And ME is a story-driven RPG franchise. Should we not expect the same quality story-writing from it's official tie-in novels as we do from the games themselves?

And I just have to laugh at the "You've never read a truly good book in your life!" -comments. First of all, nice classism you've got there. Second, I have. I also read several scientific articles per week and produce dozens of pages of text. ME is for kicking your feet up and relaxing. It's not Pulitzer-prize literature, but it's not useless either.

That's also like saying no one is allowed to criticise the new Britney Spears album before they've listened through all the pieces Vivaldi composed. Which is just silly.

Exposure is still exposure, whether its positive or negative.

That's what we need. The more word gets out, the more power is behind the disavowing of the novel from the lore.

I just finished reading the rest of these, I just can't comprehend why there are so many errors. What kind of sick and twisted guide was the author even reading? Its just so weird...it feels like he deliberately picked and changed whatever the hell he wanted.

I'm so interested in what Bioware/EA has to say (whenever they release a statement about this...if they do at all.)

Oh,god. Just read the part where Gillian convinces the Biotic Underground to completely change their plans and go after Cerberus, after being a member for 3 minutes.

I think the reviewer forgets how story driven Mass Effect is. And as long as Bioware insist that this novel is canon, to me it really tarnishes a well thought out universe and its lore.

We could always do what the Wiki did to classify errors, and use color. Like red would be major errors that are quite evident and just wreck continuity, yellow errors would be fairly substantial errors, but ones that could be explained away, and the other errors would be more nitpicky.

We could imitate that though I would like to take a somewhat harsher approch than they did.  I can understand wanting to stick to the idea of material=canon as much as possible considering the ongoing nature of the wiki but we can be a little less forgiving than them

Also we should still pick a few out for the note to the media if it is used.

What I have read in this thread and on Wiki many errors get disputed or treated lightly because descriptions could be better. It wouldn't be practical to make a short story long descriptions but for example Asari asexual things get brought up because also other people than Dietz have got that sometimes wrong in the past. That still doesn't make it any it wouldn't be wrong also in Deception.

This. If wwe have to be labelled as being sad, or as idiots in order to get the book disavowed, so be it.

There's no way in hell that anything from that book will be considered canon, because almost everything contradicts the previous canon.

I know but.... still.

When did it become a bad thing to demand a little quality and effort? Are people really that willing to accept shoddy worksmanship? When we have the means to voice our frustration, why shouldn't we do so? It's a goddamn community here. We had the means and the methods to articulate our frustration and we did so. Are some people (Such as Rubin) really this dense?

Just finished reading the excerpt. This is so goddamn awful that it makes Karpyshyn's books seem like high literature. I know I've harshly criticized Karpyshyn's writing and characterization and I maintain that criticism, but at least the man knew his lore and told reasonably coherent stories.

Thanks to the people who made the public excerpt possible. I now know this is one (and so far the only) ME publication I don't need to spend money for.

I fully support the spirit of the ME wiki's open letter and request that the content of "Mass Effect: Deception", as far as it is significant for the coherence of the universe, its timeline and its characters, will be denied recognition as part of the Mass Effect lore.

Who cares.

One comment stated that "If they ever read a good book in their lives they wouldn't be complaining."

The funny thing is, we HAVE read good books before.

Which is WHY we're complaining that this is so abysmal.

something else I have wondered: why does Kai Leng steal the dna? I mean, Cerberus and TIM defecate credits like nothing, why doesn't he simply buy it? I never got the whole "I can haz steal it yes?" thing!

Or better yet, buy it and trace it back to whoever made it. You know, sensible things.

I thought it was just so the book could show how badass Kai Leng was. He sneaks into an auction on the batarian homeworld and uses "cool gadgets" to cause chaos and escape with the bioweapon.

More to the point: what on earth was the point of the auction? The bioweapon is never mentioned again in the book (and not in ME3, as far as I can read) and the 'Prothean map egg' thing seems bizarre.

I've gotten in contact with some of my old journalism contacts over this. I'm just waiting on them getting back to me. They're mostly involved in newspaper journalism so they may not consider this the story for them but you never know. :)
