Well, unless the preview is of the actual complete novel, which, it possibly is.
I just wish the commas weren't forgotten almost all the time. Makes it very hard to read.
In terms of grammar, that is my greatest problem with it.

I'm curious if anything will be changed in the actual "mass market edition" book, though. :P

I could be convinced that the previous excerpts and previews were an early version of the book.

But the first 50 pages that were released this week look like the final product to me.

Wait, did Dietz make some sort of statement regarding the book? I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS.

From earlier in the thread:

Dietz responds!

An important part here is he says that the people who worked with Drew subjected the book to the same scrutiny they always do.

But of course since Drew created half the mythology, it's not like any scrutiny is required with his work.

Nick did really good in that instance.

And I'll say it once again that the Flood was nowhere as bad as Deception. It had actual depth in background research, cohesive sentences and believable character interaction. The problem most people had with it was its periodic setting, making it a retelling of a story well-known. With Deception, where much more creative freedom was allowed, his quality actually degraded... Which nudges me towards the unpleasant thought that he simply phoned it in.

But I still don't get it... All the grammar quips, glaring lore inconsistencies... This WAS run through editors and Bioware supervisors, right...? Please say no...

And yet... I'll still buy the book and pray that at least basic vocabulary correctness is restored.

Agreed. I actually liked The Flood. I thought it was very good for what it was supposed to do. Take the story of the first Halo game, and turn it into a book. So I am quite surprised at some of the things I'm reading from here and the excerpt about Deception. I read part of the excerpt and I have to say, I don't really have much interest in reading further. I was originally planning on buying this for my Kindle, but now I'm not sure if I will.

Apparently, in Dietz' version of the Citadel, Chora's Den is still open for business. Although it was revealed in ME2, that the place never re-opened after the Geth attack. I think Miranda mentions it, when you talk to her in Dark

He's climbin' in your windows, snatchin' your cereals up, trying to eat them. So you all need to hide yo' Cheerios, hide yo' Froot Loops, and hide yo' Cap'n Crunch, 'cause Kai Leng's eating everything up in here!

This is my sig now. (if that is ok with you, Ramus.)

On-Topic: Haven't read the excerpt, and I never will. Also, like others, I consider that the events of this book never happened. I wasn't planning on buying the book even with the announcement. Drew's previous three novels in the universe were the BEST take on it.

Believe you me, it's a much more satisfying story if you just imagine your own ending to it. Like Gillian and Nick go back to school and have a nice life after Shepard defeats the Reapers.

Nice retcon Dietz.

Oh, and he describes the Citadel as a piece of fantastic jewlery. I sh!t you not.

The Citadel resembled a piece of fantastic jewelry surrounded by luminous particles that were actually stars.

Really? Fantastic jewlery? WTF?

Is that what it says in the book? Because you don't even see stars around the citadel (except one, the Widow). It's inside a frigging nebula!!!

I love how no one can tell the difference between actual quotes and parody quotes - it's that bad.

Yeah. Like I said, out of context you'd be totally unable to convince me that this came from an actual branded Mass Effect novel.

I am speechless.
I actually signed up on twitter just to tell Derek Larke what a mess they made (and I despise twitter). But really, 129 characters just cannot express accurately the sheer and overwhelming size of the mess they made.

So successfull that now, two years later, some of the damage the sentient machines had caused is still being repaired.

Holy crap That's a reference to the timeline. This takes place two years after the battle of the Citadel? Did we all miss that? So this book takes place BEFORE Mass Effect 2 somehow? GILLIAN AGED 6 YEARS IN LESS THEN TWO. Not three like we've been talking about all along.

It literally takes place before Grayson was killed? What the heck?

"Deception" actually takes place during the Prothean era some 50,000 years ago. These all happen to be Protheans with familiar names.

Bioware has a history of letting ****ty Mass Effect tie ins that they contracted out hit the market.

For example...

ME1: Pinnacle Station DLC, not developed by Bioware and it was crap.
The Mass Effect Iphone game, not developed by Bioware and it was crap.
Mass Effect: Deception contracted out to Dietz and its crap.

Bioware really needs to be more careful with their IPs.
