Anderson and Kahlee met while battling Saren, you guys.

what?

That's what Dietz claimed. Sure, you can insert a word in there like Fob pointed out and it all makes sense, but I find the mishap altogether entertaining, as per my usua reaction to this book.

also, the thing about the citadel resembling fantastic jewelry.....

the first thing i think is, in what way? fantastic jewelry is not a description. i have no idea what the citadel looks like based on this. except that maybe it's sparkly....

and it's just plain goofy.

As you know, expensive jewelry has whole cities living on it.

Earlier in the "novel" he says it's star-shaped.

Ah, I see. Well, I guess that's why you proof read. It's amazing what one lil word can do.

I mean, if you handed in a paper like this to your college professor, what kinda grade do you think you'd get?

Allllllrighty, I'm diving in for another look at the google book preview. Not much yet, but there will be more coming. And my my, what have we here?

What if the group decided to kill Leng? Thereby eliminating the bait to draw the Illusive Man in? She would be a failure...And the possibility of that filled Gillian with angst. Such were the teenagers thoughts and emotions as all the biotics not assigned for guard duty assembled under the cavern's main floor.

I managed to dig up his description of a mass relay:

Like a projectile fired from a rifle the Pictor flew toward what looked like an evil eye floating in the blackness of space. Two communications masts stood straight up from a structure that consisted of two gigantic rings that rotated around a glowing sphere.

Evil eye?  EVIL EYE!?  It's a giant tuning fork.  How do you screw that up?  URGE TO KILL RISING*.

*Note to any potentially overzealous moderators: this is not an actual threat to do harm to Mr Dietz. It is a Simpsons reference.  Consult Google for further information.

I wonder why he felt the need to separate it? it looked like a piece of fantastic, star-shaped jewelry..

It's still goofy, but....

I agree, and I am so disappointed in this.

Karpyshyn's story got destroyed by both parties.

I just emailed Karpyshyn the following:  contact@drewkarpyshyn.com

"Hello Mr. Karpyshyn.

I have been reading some excerpts from the upcoming Mass Effect: Deception novel and I was wondering if you had the opportunity to view any early drafts of this work or to offer feedback to it's author Mr. Dietz?

From everything I have seen Mr. Dietz has simply butchered the characters you created.  I can understand that you might not have the time or the desire to continue working on this series and that is understandable; but I would have to imagine that a  professional author like yourself would be saddened to see your creations treated so poorly.

Thank you for your time."

I doubt he'll respond with anything substantive; but I really would like to get his reaction to this.

As I said I suspect he's contractually obligated not to comment on this; but as an author I have to imagine that seeing someone butcher the characters he created must hurt his pride.

Among other things, that meant there was no such thing as standard sized ducts. Some were large enough to stand in. Others, like the one Hendel was traversing, were barely wider than his shoulders. And that was uncomfortable. Especially for a man who didn't like small spaces.

Short sentence structure. Gets annoying after awhile. Wouldn't you agree?

Haha, that suggestion was not serious though. By now, I am way beyond giving the benefit of the doubt.

The worst part is that this book is going to be sold in its current state.

You'd think the best editors would be US. I'd scrap the whole damned thing, bring in Drew again, and have him write Deception himself. Correctly. Especially after looking over EVERYTHING we pointed out as being incorrect or shoddy.

Oh, and here's the rest of the mass relay scene, which provides some much needed context on an earlier discovery:

Slowly at first, and then with increasing speed, the rings began to spin as the ship closed in. Then, once
the Pictor was about five hundred kilometers away, the relay fired and the freighter was consumed by a vortex of dark energy. It shimmered and disappeared.

But because Anderson was busy making love to Kahlee he missed the transition from one state to another.

I can only presume he was making love to Kahlee slowly at first, and then with increasing speed, and then his relay fired and....

I don't know an editor in the world that would let this go past. That's what I don't understand. How did this happen? Was it a time issue? They just had to take what was there? I..just...

"Look!" Anderson exclaimed "Gyrocycles!" I saw them on the way in. Let's grab one."
"You can drive it?"
A much younger version of Anderson appeared when he smiled. "I can con a spaceship, can't I?"

I do not have the words...how did this ever get past editing?

This is why you don't replace the writers of a series of novels, especially when one was a lead writer of the video game series the books are based on and the other is just a hired mercenary writer.
