Wait.

The letter asks for Deception to not be recognized as canon but then goes on to say they have no demands?

Ask =/= Demand.  Is your dictionary broken?

We obviously have a different definition of dictionary. Mine includes common sense, which seems to be lacking in yours. Oh wait, no, that would also include critical thinking skills. My bad. Sorry, I wasn't more black and white in my sentences.

Book is book. Don't care. You care. Too bad for you. Deal with it.

Simple enough for you?

Wow who pissed on your cereal this morning...

I love how every now and then we get someone making a self-righteous speech about how "we" should be representing ourselves. For a massive group-coordinated effort, I think everyone has done a fine job in keeping poised and making sure we stay as respectful as possible.

So either you did not read the letter, or read it and didn't care or understand the tone of the letter, thus your point basically comes from your love. Cool. Right on. Keep on the love. More power to you. Love the love.

In the very slight chance that the IGN story was missed by you guys, here it is. Likewise, they actually contacted BioWare for a comment. Let's see if they can ignore that!

I'm not that guy but the intent of my post was to insult the fictional Sanders, not you or other women. I apologize if it did offend you, however, I think women of your type could tone down your sensitivity. My ex-girlfriend used to get mad if I called someone a "p*ssy" but she called people "dicks" all the time.

I use the former in a joking manner with friends, I use the latter to insult. :P If someone called me either that'd just be fair play.

It is great that we all voice our concern... As much as i love BioWare as a game studio, they cant look over this, I really hope this book wil not be considered canon!

It seems like you are talking about the letter from the wiki admins? Because that's not intended to be on behalf of the fans. They would like to see is removed from canon because it is going to be extremely difficult to integrate the conflicting info into existing articles.

They're not claiming to represent you. They're claiming to represent themselves.

You know who's opinnion on how women should act is irrelevant?

A guy's.

Also, a guy calling someone a "p*ssy" =/= a girl calling someone a "d**k".

Take like Gender Studies 101, and you'll find out why soon enough. //OT

On topic: Deception still sucks. Very, very much.

I'd like to say right now to you guys, before this thread gets locked (which I feel might be sooner than expected) that I love you all for being so awesome and united against this filthy piece of "literature".

Together, we have created an army to fight back this atrocious Reaper-ized book and continue to make progress to driving it back into dark space! What I mean to say is...

It's been an honour to be part of a BioWare Social Network that is fully united against a common enemy. No matter where future DLCs, updates and the upcoming Mass Effect 3 might take us, we will always remember in our darkest days this shining light of hope that we, as fans, can stand together.

Exactly, it's not to be taken literally, nor directed durogatorily at a specific gender.

Wait.

The letter asks for Deception to not be recognized as canon but then goes on to say they have no demands? So that's a request and not a demand, right? Why would you make demands? Is this a negotiation? Is Bioware aware there is a negotiation? They are a producer of a product, we are consumers. A price is set. You have a choice to purchase. The negotiation is personal. It's up to you whether or not you are going to try to sway your friends but even then, that's a personal choice. Not a negotiation. Will you be taking metaphorical or figurative hostages? Cos if that's the case, I must have taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

The tone of the letter is very unprofessional. Platitudes mixed with insults. Examples: stating that they recognize artistic integrity then goes on to say the writing of the book as a lazy way to cash in.

Nice way of alienating Bioware.

I am not saying the book is not without it's errors, it has many errors. What I am saying is, be careful how you represent the fan base. Not everyone is going to jump on the "hate" bandwagon. Such as myself. Seeing such a low blow to the company that gave us the very reason for being on this forum is haphazard at best, unappreciative at worst.

The story is a story. I take it on its own story irregardless of how it is being marketed. I do not feel betrayed or feel as if Bioware failed me in anyway. They are a company. Dietz is a writer who was paid to do a job, he did it. I will not be blaming anyone for the outcome. It is what it is.

Sad to see so much mockery, vehenmence and vitriol being spewed. Thanks for the representation of this fan, but no thanks. I'll see myself out.

You are mixing two very distinct things. When the letter states that "they recognize artistic integrity", they're talking about BioWare's efforts to give us the world we have come to care so much about. "A lazy way to cash in" would be referring to Dietz's attempt to completely butcher the universe and the characters we've come to love and root for.

And despite everything you're saying, we're not alienating BioWare. I'm betting most of us are still enjoying their products (even as I write this), and will continue to do so.

The fact remains that this effort was outside BioWare, was a poor attempt at continuing the stories of several characters we've come to know, and yet BioWare stood by it and got it published. We believe that their property should be treated better than this.

We're not so much "hating", as you say, as wanting to see this corrected. We've already accepted the book's existence. Whether it remains in the canonical lore remains to be seen.

If you don't feel represented that's fine, and I'm sorry you feel that way. But don't think that because you don't fit on it, that this isn't a battle worth fighting. I love Mass Effect, and I believe it deserves better than this book. I'm sure the others here that support this share the same sentiment.

Peace. :wizard:

Essentially, Bioware is a company. They can't make steps that would make them look worse than they look now.
Which is why if this fiasco continues any further, they will have to respond in SOME way.

...it's still funny that if they had stopped this by declaring the book non-canon as soon as the first flames appeared, they would not suffer from this international issue. Should have responded eariler.

declaring it non-canon right away would have hurt sales in an order of magnitude much bigger than a bad rating in Amazon. Not gonna happen.

Obvious trolls are obvious.  In other news, more outlets are mentioning this, which is good news for us.

Also, please, please take the thesis on gender roles elsewhere.

From the linked article:

Videogame tie-in novels range from "relatively acceptable" to "total ****," and it would appear that Mass Effect: Deception is firmly in the latter category. According to the amount of series inconsistencies found in the book, it was written by somebody who's never even heard of Mass Effect
A public Google doc has been opened for fans to list errors, and so many people are editing it that it's currently in read-only form for everybody else. Some of the errors verge on nitpicking, while others are downright grotesque or simply bad writing.

"This includes a character ‘growing up’ from being autistic, turning Mass Effect’s only gay male character straight and then killing him," notes the document, "and being literally impossible to reconcile with the timeline made by the games, comics and other books."  One can definitely question people spending their free time correcting errors in a tie-in novel, but for Mass Effect fans, this document is going to make some essential and entertaining reading!

Why is that relevant? If you have an issue with the letter, you should head on over to the wiki and make it know to the admins there. If you are actually a contributer, I'm sure you'd be listened to.

The point is that this is not he forum for that complaint. None of us wrote that letter. Why don't you take your issues up with it's author?
