what's even worse is that when you read the beginning where the shooting is mentioned, it appears to be Grayson who has shot Nick not Leng. Now  I must say that I don't remember who exactly shot Nick, i have to check Retribution for that but if Leng shot Nick, then Dietz totally paints a different picture of that at the beginning of Deception.

I went back and checked, and it is Grayson who shoots Nick at the end of Retribution, not Leng.

It still doesn't excuse Nick not recognizing him in Deception, however.

I think I read this somewhere else, but William C. Dietz has officially become the Uwe Boll of game novels.

I wonder what fan beloved franchise he will ruin next...

OMG, I said the EXACT SAME THING to my brother about 6 or 7 hours ago when I started reading this thread. I told him 'someone needs to throw out that Deitz is the Uwe Boll for novels'. He chuckled. In my last post I totally forgot about it till I saw this.

So perfect, it sums it up so very well really.

I leave this thread alone for 9 hours and it's 40+ pages bigger. I refuse to go back and read anything I might have missed though.

Hey, she isn't a total idiot. She was able to convince a terrorist organization to derail their plans and go after another terrorist organization instead after being a member for 5 minutes.  And she came up with a plan to kill the Illusive man without have any information at all.

I must admit, Gillian veers alarmingly from 'moronic' to 'charismatic and incredibly intelligent' remarkably quickly. Like, in the space of five pages.

Wanted to hop in and thank everyone here for pointing out what a mess this book is. I own the previous 3 installments and was sure to buy Deception aswell. Already took it off my wishlist on Amazon and it'll stay off for good.

Once again, thanks.

There has been some discussion about Dietz other works but I liked to ask something specific.

How good he is with characters. Do his characters have depth and can he write convincing emotional scene?

There was a scene in The Flood where the bridge crew of the Pillar of Autumn, people Eric Nylund had built up and deepened in the previous novel to the point where they were fairly major characters, were casually slaughtered by an Elite. In that scene, I think I can remember some fairly powerful stuff about the reactions of the characters as the alien moved along the line shooting them.

As opposed to the three deaths in Deception, which strike me as callously wooden and frankly ridiculous given their circumstances.

No, thank you, good forum-goer, for taking a stand and literally not buying into this crap. The only way we can send a crystal clear message that this was not okay is to have more people like you decide not to purchase it on the grounds that it really is that bad.

Since Gillian wasn't supposed to get back till 2188, why bother to mention anything at all. They could just have left it all alone.

I'm wondering this too.

It's not like there aren't any other stories in the Mass Effect universe that Bioware could've turned into a book prior to ME3.

Heck, Deception has just about nothing to do with the Reaper invasion anyway. Kahlee and Anderson get distracted from their investigation to run off after Gillian and Nick and have lots of relay transition sex.

Agreed. What happened to the characters is the absolute worst part of the whole thing for me. I know a lot of people could care less, but I actually LIKED those characters ffs.

+1.

If they were going to be killed off anyway, make their deaths mean something. Gillian's is because of a crazily out of character vengeance mission, Nick's is because he got delusions of grandeur about biotic supremacy despite never showing any inclination of such, and Hendel's is because the author clumsily had him shoot a 'special character' we'd been introduced to precisely once before in the novel.

Just popping in to voice my support and to say thanks for convincing me to cancel my pre-order of the book. After the excerpt i was still gonna give it a chance in the hope it got better, obviously it didn't.

Laughs... you've gotta love Hendel's internal thoughts after he finds and tracks Nick to the Biotic Underground's hideout on Omega:

Hendel was careful not to look around, or even glance at the guards, as he walked past. It would be a mistake to show how interested he was. But Hendel could think about the discovery and he did. You may be wearing two guns, the ex- security officer thought to himself, and you may have a girlfriend. But you’re still a pimply faced troublemaker and your ass is mine. Have a nice day, Nick. I’ll be back.

That whole paragraph has really unfortunate phrasing.

So is there anything, anything at all in this jumble of crap that is actual information that would be good to have going into ME3?]

Not a thing,

We learn that Cerberus is experimenting with Reaper tech on its soldiers, and Kai Leng has cybernetic upgrades.

We knew both of those things months ago.
